Well I decided to remake an old ship I made years ago for my unfiinsed thread story Nyxfall.
The TCNS Arthur Dreadought.
So far I've only modeled the main body design without the fine details. Those come later.
I've managed to keep it low poly so far. 4,176 polies. However that will increase as I add components.
Next up to render will be the main weapons. The Particle Coil spinal cannon is already built into the main body.
Total list of armaments to be added.
A list of armaments:
-20x heavy pulse laser turrets (all round)
-6x medium massdriver turrets (all round)
-2x heavy railgun turrets (top, bottom)
-16x heavy plasma cannon turrets (fore, port, starboard)
-4x X-ray lasers (fore)
-2x OPA-008 heavy particle accelerators (fore)
-1x Plasma Coil (spinal)
-6x missile pods (all round, 20 cells each)
-32x torpedo tubes (16 fore, 8 port, 8 starboard)

Doing some work on the weapons now.
Design for the Pulse Laser Turret. There will be 20 of these dotted in various locations along the hull.

the model as some sort of....attractive simplisity of shape, bo extra "stuff" hanging out...

Awesome design/model, HeX. My only gripe is that it looks more like some kind of Orbital gun, or something along those lines, rather than a dreadnaught imo. Absolutely badass :) :yes:

Well if I had a fighter or some such as a comparison, you'd see the real size to it. Perhaps if I get some good texturing it'll show off the scale a bit more.
Though essentially it is built around one large main gun (the Plasma Coil, which reaches almost back to the drive system where it takes power from the core). So I could see how one could get that impression. :)

So it's almost like an Ion Cannon frigate, only bigger and with defensive guns?

Yeah kinda. More like the Homeworld 2 Progenitor Dreadnought. Alot of weaponry built around one massive gun.

I love the design but those turrets seem very high poly to me if you're planning to have this thing work in the game. How many polys have you got on them?
But otherwise keep it up :)

Heh...yeah putting ships in game is still out of my range of capabilities. :)
But if I ever put this sucker in game, I'd reduce the turrets to simple shapes with textures rather then the actual raised plates. :)

I reckon you could find quite a few modders who'd be happy to put it in :)
After all you've done most of the hard work. :D

Indeed, or just provide the hull and let some other muggins make all the turrets ;)

You have to remember that alot of the firepower is anti-fighter and anti-strike ship. While it SEEMS to be heavily armed things to remember:
1) Nyxfall warships have a shield generation system. It's anti-kinetic as well as anti-directed energy. This means railguns, missiles and torpedos are not very effective at first.
2) Particle beam cannons and X-Ray Lasers are for anti-shield operation primarily. Pulse lasers are used against fighters and incomming torpedoes. Plasma weapons are for taking on smaller capships that may outmaneuver the larger Arthur
3) The plasma coil penetrates MOST shield forms. However it has a long recharge time. By the time you rearm, an opposing warship is either moved, or brought heavy guns to bear. Heance the forward armaments designed for a one-two punch.
