Title: I spoke to :V: today...
Post by: Starks on July 19, 2004, 12:09:46 pm
Here's what I learned...

*Not aware of Derek Smart's intentions for FS3 until I told them, but knew who he is from his 'work'.

*:V: will scope out our community, I gave them our url.

*Interplay will either take the FS series license to hell along with the company or sell it.

*Interplay STILL holds the rights at this moment.

*:V: will be talking to Interplay, very very soon...

At least there is still a light at the end of the tunnel... even if it is some b****** with a torch bringing us bad news.

Great news.

Handing over the license to :V: is the best way.
Even if Derek Smart could  create a good FS3 (unlikely), there is noone is better for the job than :V:. (Just a fact, cause they are the creators.)
Title: I spoke to :V: today...
Post by: Ace on July 19, 2004, 12:26:44 pm
Let's hope the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a meson bomb blowing the node up :)

Now I want to hear it from everyone now:
If Volition makes FS3 a console game- No complaining. ;)
Title: I spoke to :V: today...
Post by: Lonestar on July 19, 2004, 12:26:47 pm
This sounds good and all, but its kinda hard to verify. If V is interesting in getting their license back, im 100% for it!
Title: I spoke to :V: today...

I would preorder it as soon as possible.

Y'know.. I could live with a console FS3, for the simple fact that my X-Box is more powerful than my PC.....

I'm with Thorn, we can still mod Fs2 ;)

Hell, I might even buy a console specificly for the purpose of playing FS3.

The preference for me would be a console game AND a computer game. I'm just praying for the best right now.

So Derek doesn't destroy Fs3 in his hands, this means that we still have a chance of having a :V: Fs3 they way it was meant to be.  Although, I wouldn't care if they destroyed it, just so it doesn't get it the wrong hands

*shhh* We're trying to build up an aura of false hope so that when Volition employees lurk on the HLP board they will feel obligated to purchase the liscense, otherwise they'd hurt the feelings of all of these people. :D
Title: I spoke to :V: today...
Post by: SadisticSid on July 19, 2004, 12:46:21 pm
Aren't most of the people at V who had input into FS and FS2 working elsewhere now? I think if it was left in the hands of people who didn't have major experience with the previous games then V might be a second choice of developer, with something like Totally Games being the best... still, I think most of us would agree that virtually any developer would be a step up from Derek Smart

It is good new, bacause Volition won't harm HLP or any other FS2 community or Mod. They could have done so already if they wanted to...

They have the real story. They know what caused the shivan problem.

Perhaps without Interplay they could create an even better game.

a lot here don't remember when Dave was a constant poster, or before WildWolf became part of Volition.

people at V are very familiar with HLP and have been since the beginning.

But I'm glad to see they know about Derek's intentions.

Well, considering we are far from in a 'pick and choose' position, it's pretty pointless saying 'XX shouldn't do it because....'

To me, the most important thing is to try and lure someone who IS going to support modders and the community, rather than finding reasons not to lure those companies.

To be realistic, THQ owns Volition, and as we all know, they're money-grubbing corporate ass-monkies. Like so many other publishers, they don't care about good games, they care about the Benjamins. If they wanted to make FS3, they would have done so by now. They would rather make "Britney's Dance Studio 3: Like Omigod, Way Cool" than continue the Freespace series. What I'm hoping for is that some other, gamer friendly publisher, such as Ubisoft or Acitivision, will pick up the license and develop the game. As Venom said, most of the original crew is probably gone by now, so Volition might not even be the best choice, though I'm not quite sure whats going on inside the company.

Ah damn, I'm being a pessimist again. Sorry.

Battlefleet Gothic owns on so many levels- however BfG concentrates more on a battlegroup level, whereas FS2 is built around the fighter.

I know. But I've been testing out some rules my buddy and I are devising to play on a fighter level. Its almost akin to Wh4k at this point, as in squadron fighting, with individual fighters grouped in squadrons of 6. It works kinda well. We just need to work on the manouvering aspects and dofighting. Right now we just havea rather boring "assault" phase in which the squadrons just duke it out. But we'd like to incorporate more dogfighting.

it's hard to incorporate dogfighting using a 2D board, but there is a tabletop fighter engine like Dogfight Over Flanders that might work.

Well, dogfighting... missile would work like normal shots, and you roll dices to get to shoot or make evasive actions to raise your save ( sorry, I never played BFG, so my comments are based on the 40k rules ) during assaut ( dogfight ) phase? Wouldn't work at all the way I describe it, but from there you can make adjustements, I suppose.

Ubisoft also had serious money problems last year, seems better now, tho. really, if decisions like that one saved them, it's cool, coz they remain one of my favourite editors, and there's always loads of goodies for their games ( rah, PoD and it's dozens of new circuits and vehicles... "wipes tears, tries once again to make it accept his radeon, fails again" )

Yeah, thats pritty much what we will be heading towards. Missiles will give you minus saves, while normal shots work like bolters. And you get armor saves as normal. But we were thinking of just having the dogfight in the beggining to see who gets behind who. We were thinking a bit on the lines of the LOTR board game rules. That you both roll dice and the one with the highest score wins. And depending on what you fly and how good the pilot is, you get the appropriate amount of dice. Hmm. Maybe I should post this as a thread later. seems like some of you might be interested. Heheh. A Freespace mod for a boardgame. :D

Don't think of it as calling up an professional game development company, asking them if you, a complete stranger, could maybe talk to someone "in charge" to inquire about the status of their intellectual property and if it might be possible to purchase said property using funds collected from among a motley crew of Internet fanboys....

...think of it as building your social skills.

Ok, I've edited the post for now, until you show me where you got that info and that it is in fact public domain. If you got it from his registration somewhere, we shouldn't really have it here. In any event, it'll probably serve only to spark more flames.

Yeah, you're asking for jail time or serious fines. Don't be cocks about this, keep it "V for FS3".

Yes, House numbers are stupid, let's keep our side professional, eh?

Personal comments won't do us much good either :(

First one who calls Smart's house gets to go through Janos' porn collection - a fate worse than death.

Okay. Lets just make sure we don't all spam [V] with phone calls.

Personally I think we should nominate one person to do it as HLP's official representative. I'm happy to do it myself but if everyone wants someone else that's fine with me.

I wouldn't mind hearing some suggestions on what people want asked though.

If it is in India, give me a head's up and I'll give 'em a call :)

I agree with Kara, if 15 people phone them to ask them the same thing, it's going to achieve nothing. Kara would be a good idea for this, he has excellent diplomatic skills and keeps his cool ;)

I nominate Icefire.

Secondly, IF ANYONE CONTACTS INTERPLAY, find out about the copies of FS2:20th Anniversary Edition and the possibility of legally decompressing Freespace MVE movies.

Yeah, Kara or Thunder or someone along those lines. We could always get someone with a thick accent to call them up and talk very fast. Hopefully, they'll be so confused that they'll agree to whatever it is they think the person wants, and then we gots em by the grapes....er, yup.

2 things.

1) Interplay's number has been disconnected for some time. It still is.

2) Jesus, have you people lost your minds? Can we please edit out the bull****?

3) I lied, 3 things. I actually have been trading emails with Volition for a couple weeks now on the PXO issue, can we PLEASE not deluge them with calls? They stopped answering their phone once because of such things, I'd like to actually keep the communications open this time. Or would we like a repeat of the VBB? Come on people, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Use them brains. Think tact, think diplomacy. Just THINK.

Silent Space, right? Do I win anything?

By the way, any idea if that game was any good?  As impressive as Far Cry turned out to be, the advance screenshots for Silent Space were kind of average.

I agree with this 100% which is why I said only one of us should do it. I was thinking along the lines of introducing myself (if I end up being the one who does it) by saying that I was officially nominated by the community to interview someone from [V] precisely so that they WOULDN'T be deluged with e-mails and phone calls. :)

If anybody gets through to Interplay, remember, you're a representative of Microsoft or some other big-name game company. If you tell them you're from some forum run by kids who obviously won't have any money, they'll hang up immediately. Tell them that your company is looking into the possibility of developing a space sim and would preferably like to license one rather than create a whole new universe. Your company has been looking at a number of licensing possibilities, such as Wing Commander or Independence War or whatnot, and the FreeSpace name came up. Ask for a price for acquiring the rights to FreeSpace, but before they answer, make sure to note that the FreeSpace name is not very valuable considering that the games never sold many copies. Your company probably wouldn't be willing to pay more than $100-150 grand [you want to drive down the value of buying the rights if possible].

If I get thru to Interplay, I will be myself. But that particular contact number is disconnected.

Anyone who engages in illegal harrassment gets what the deserve. If you want to be a twat, only the local constabulary knocking on your door will wake you up. Good luck in life, brain dead behavior like that will get you far.

Smooth attitude.

This thread has become spam and has been locked as such. If anyone has anything of value they want to post here, please contact myself or another admin and ask that it be unlocked so that a proper conversation can continue.

In addition if anyone attempts to make use of Dereks phone numer, address or other details - no matter how they got hold of them, understand this.

You will be on your own.

It frightens me that some of you would make such serious attempts to find details about him, and no doubt any legal action bought around by harassing him in his own home or via telephone / other electronic form will not be looked kindly upon by him or by the proper authorities.

As such, Hard Light Productions will want nothing to do with you.

You're crossing the line here people - I understand the feeling of negativity toward him after things kicked off - but there is no cause whatsoever to make use of his personal details.

As I said, HLP will want nothing to do with anyone who attempts to use his details. We are a community website for the enjoyment of the Freespace franchise - and it seems some people have forgotten that.

Now I trust none of you are so stupid as to attempt to make use of his personal details. You are now aware of our position regarding this.

That is all.
