I found out how to make the model in 3d max, I even use a smoother thingy magicy and they come really smooth. but now I'm learning about rendering? using UVUNWRAP? is this the right thing I got to use to render models?
any help on this would be appreciated, I really want to start helping and have been studying 3dmax for the last 4 days (non stop (beside's eat :P).

Render? UVunwrap is for UVW mapping a model, it has nothing to do with rendering... If you mean rendering Freespace models (extracted from the game) you'll probably want 3D Exploration to convert the COB files to 3DS format and import them on MAX.

Rendering can be done with Max as well as modelling. The button is, of all things, the teapot one in the main toolbar, but you'll probably need to do some tutorials before you can produce decent renders (or fiddle about for several (dozen) hours). Unfortunately, I took the second option, so I can;t provide any useful links off the top of my head.
