Title: Hiiiii (and other things)
Post by: Scuddie on July 22, 2004, 10:09:41 pm
Hey all, I'm back from the dead!  Mwahahaha!!  Not that anybody would have missed me :(.  OK...

Anyway, I am highly impressed with what has been done since my unfortunate sever (sp?) of my internet connection.  This was around about the time Bob introduced a build that had Tri-Strips.  Loooong time ago ;).  And now I come back to see how it is, now that I have an internet again.  Good job everybody :).

Anyway (again), I am majorly concerned with the memory leak problem, and I hope you are finding luck with isolating it and fixing it.  I am using two different versions right now.  The 3.6 exe (the one that came with the installer), and the T-20040717 exe.  The differences in these builds are quite large, considering that the 3.6 exe doesnt have alot of the options the newer build has, such as -env or -alpha_env.  Bad frame rates too.  Problem is, the new builds have memory leaks.  Very bad.  Even a 4GB pagefile is filled after 5 or so missions.  So, what I'd like to see is an exe without the memory leak that the new versions have, but has most (if not all) of the optimizations and options of the latest build.  Does one exist?

Also, one thing that sucks major donkey teeth (dont ask) is that my joystick is broken, so I have to fly with the keypad.  And that really sucks.  So do you think that some time in the future it would be possible to fly with the mouse, a la X-Wing/Tie Fighter series, where a slight move back on the mouse would tilt the aim up, and really pulling it back would move it the maximum available amount for that craft.  I think that would be a worthy addition to it, considering many people dont fly with joysticks, and a keyboard+mouse navigation would help people until they can get a joystick :).

TIA
Scuddie.

Does mouse support just not exist right now?  It was available in vanilla Freespace, you just had to turn it on in the options menu.

We all our concerned with the memory leak, IIRC it'll take awhile to fix :(

But, anyway welcome back ;)

Bah.  I am an idiot!

That is not what I meant.  As of now, the mouse controls are either move or not.  Same thing as the keypad.  I was actually hoping for an analog mouse solution instead of a digital one.  All the mouse is just maybe 1/2 of movement.  This should be changed.  Also mouse sensitivity should be implemented as well, so people could decide on being a precision shooter, or a fast paced pilot.  I hope this clears it up :).

Why on Earth would a mouse be "move or not move, like the keypad"?  I actually dislike joysticks for FS as I've always played with a mouse.  Funny thing actually, the first time I played the original FS was at my uncle's house.  They'd had gotten FS for me for Christmas and my comp wouldn't play it(req. a 200mhz processor and mine was 150) so he let me install it on his, which had a full stick and rudder set up.  Only instead of a fighter HOTAS style stick, it was set up like a Cessna.  It was weird, but cool.
