Title: DVD Burners... Need the HLP brains
Post by: jdjtcagle on July 23, 2004, 07:41:12 pm
So I bought a bundle of DVDs...  But I have a question...
Do I need a special DVD burner for my computer or do I need software?

I have a rewritable drive and can burn music onto CD-Rs and CD-RW's in media player...

The reason I ask is because my friend wants a copy of Freespace 1 and 2, I would happy too, but I need to know if it is a Software deal (if is, point one out to me :) ) or a hardware deal?

Excuse my ignorance of computer knowledge :(

You need a DVD burner to burn DVDs. Expect to pay 60 USD+

not until I start working and I doubt when I do I'll be allowed to buy something like this...

Thanks, I thought it was Hardware issues

Can't you just copy the Freespace disks to CDRs?
Freespace (Mine anyway) Came on 3 CD's - Your CD-RW drive can copy those easily (To CDRs obviously, not DVD[+-#@xyz!=]Rs :D)

See, me? I'm not touching DVDs until they either a) Become more standardised or b) Someone releases a Double-Sided Double-Layer Near-Field Amplificatied Blue-Ray drive and discs :D

Or a holographic wafer, I'd be down with that too :)

BluRay (no typo's, idiotic name) is stupid. We have a ready-defined standard called DVD 18, ready to use, supporting 15 gigs, and they want another, new standard, supporting not all that mch more. Double layered burners are in the works, and double sided discs can be read in single sided drives, you just need to flip em.

What's wrong with DVD's? I've got two DVD+RW drives and two DVD±/RAM drives. Buying DVD spindles is much cheaper per Mb than CD's. Besides, for same amount of gigabytes DVD's takes a lot less space. :) And with firmaware upgrades your drive can be upgraded to support dual-layer format. Reading at very least. Depends on manufacturer though, some may want to rip you off buy selling anoter model with dual layer support.

You can but I'd rather copy it to CD-R. Almost any burning software can copy a disk.

Can you tell me how? Put all the files in my CD-R drive hit the copy button and everything will run like the freespaceCDs?

- Put FS2 CD1 into drive.
- Open up your burning software. (Nero Burning ROM for example)
- Select copy CD.
- It will make an image to hdd first.
- Insert a blank CD-R disc to drive when asked to do so.
- Wait.
- You have a copy of FS2 CD1.
- Repeat for CD2 and 3.

More specific instructions can be found from readme's and help files of your burning software.

For recent games it will not be that easy because of copy protections but FS2 does not seem to have any.

It's not sufficient for copying copy-protected CD's if you want to make 1:1 copies. But that's that and gray area of discussion.

[color=66ff00]A few years back I was looking forward to a new format called FMD; Flourescent Multilayer Disk. The disks had far greater capacities than DVD, they were cheaper to produce and they could potentially hold up to 1TB.

Unfortunatley nobody had the foresight to buy into the tech. as far as I know and it just turned to vapourware.

Ok my friend has a copy of Freespace 1, hopefully it works and installs right since I did a 1:1 copy and it is copyrighted.  Hope he likes it, not sure if it's his taste yet :)
