Title: Freespace Is Mean To Me...
Post by: InfernoGod on July 26, 2004, 10:09:19 am
I need some help. Whenever I go into Freespace, I can't click on the Ready Room (where missions start), the barracks (where you control your pilots), or the mission simulator in the technical database of the game crashes. I would uninstall it, but I have the first three missions for my campaign completed, and I would prefer not to do them again... So can I uninstall without losing them? Or do I have to start from scratch...:(

Hm... Try making a copy of your players-directory, uninstall, reinstall, throw your players back in. I THINK that should work.

That's not my main concern. I wanna know if my missions can be safe. Anyone can use the shivan super laser to get big points and get up to the admiral status again... But if that would work and it would keep my missions, then I'll go for it. Last time I uninstalled, I didn't have my missions, and like I said... three long days for one missions...

Uh... move your missions out of the data/missions folder and somewhere else?

which brings up the next problem... my computer doesn't recognize them, so once i reinstall, they won't be missions anymore. I'm trying to solve this problem, but nothing seems to be working- although that is obvious.

WTF? Of course FS2'll recognize them once you've reinstalled.

my computer is screwed up with some things. i've already uninstalled and reinstalled to fix something once, moved the missions back to the missions folder, and they couldn't be found- according to my computer.

If the file type isn't being recognized, just tell Windows to open it with FRED2. You may need to run FRED once before the associations pick up, but I don't think so.  If your system is that bugged out though, it may be time for a reinstall of everything.

OK, that fixes the problem.

actually, on the subject, my quick start (jump to mission) box in FRED has never worked. I've always had to fart around going through the launcher (not that I can be arsed FREDing much nowadays)

I seem to recall that my one never worked, I've always booted the game and gone into the Mission Sim :)

Are you talking about the Run Freespace button, that's never worked for me either

It never worked for anyone as it's actually looking for the Freespace 1 exe :D

Rename your FS2.exe to fs.exe and it will suddenly start to work :D

Phear my knowledge of FRED trivia :D

Ah. So he requires proof. Very well.

*Goes away to craft a mission requiring the use of obscure, maybe even arcane FRED knowledge*

Actually after reading those tutorials I'd say that you're one of the FREDders with nothing to phear :D
I know I keep cheerleading for them but I'm surprised at how little attention they got.

Not so much a FRED trick as a more general FS2 one.

Open a single player mission in notepad. Change the +Game Type Flags:  entry from 1 to 11.

Open the mission in FRED and set the rest of Alpha wing player ships.

The mission can now be played as multiplayer coop as well as single player. :D

Completely unbalanced of course but it can be fun when you're playing online with complete newbies :D

I notice your efforts, thx :) Maybe when more people actually play multi again? Hope so...
