Post by: magatsu1 on July 26, 2004, 12:23:09 pm
That means I be handin' out the beat down to all you *****es

*jabs his finger at everyone in turn*

actually, that means I'll be in the advanced group tonight (in about an hours time) for the first time, so I'll more-than-likely be too shattered to do anything.

:D :D

I'll remind you that being a Shaolin Monk doesn't make you a good fighter if you've got a glass jaw to begin with.

Regardless of what colour your belt is, a punch to the throat will still kill you.

Good Job, i remember when i got my green belt. Had to fight off three of my classmates and then my sensie. I lost to my sensie obviously but afterwords i got some students together to take him down! It almost worked, until a cursed bow smacked me in the head!

Well on the one hand - a green belt in karate isn't exactly the highest rated belt there is. So less of the empty threats please :)

On the other hand of course - at least you learnt that far - which is better than your average man. Congratulations on the achievment :)

depending on what art - even what style (WTF TKD vs ITF TKD --- most US dojangs are ITF) a green belt can be deadly

Perhaps true - but I have far more respect for the martial arts expert who stays quite but knows their own abilities over the martial arts expert who throws their weight and attitude around.

Granted that they have the skill. That type don't do it for self improvement though - they do it for.. bragging rights. Machoism. I've no time for that.

(not attacking anyone with this - just saying how I feel about it).

Hmm....

Karate is more about philosophy, physical education and doing something that makes you content.

I think someone who has experience in beating other people up still is superior to a Karateka.
A Karateka has no real knowledge of CLOS INFIGHT, as soon as the opponent gets really close ( ellbow/knee distance ) he is helpless. And forget about all the blocking techniques, they are useless in real combat.

He made the green belt, and that is something he CAN be proud of, no matter if he would prevail in a real combat situation or not.

If you are interested in being able to WIN REAL fighting situations TKD is slightly superior to Karate I think, but still no match to WingTsun.

I bet none of them stand a chance against a good ol' western 9mm, for that matter.

No, they asked a WingTsun Master what system is the best. WingTsun ? Shotokan ? Wrestling ? Boxing ?

He said "The best system is Smith & Wesson"

Actually Thunder's right. Green is only the 3rd belt but now I'm in the advanced class, training directly under  the main bloke Dave Breed (5th dan or so) Did some really cool "hook alternatives-into take down" drills tonight.

For the record I've still got (IIRC) 2 blue, 2/3puple, 3 brown ->black (2yrs alone) to go yet

I haven't been this enthusiastic about my Karate for a long time though.

Actually many samurai could own the hell out of people even if their katana was taken away. :D In fact, many samurai practised a hand-to-hand art as well as wielding a set of swords.

I believe one of the kumi (group) leaders in the Shinsengumi (they protected Kyoto in the Meiji Revolution times) was trained in Jiu-jitsu and possibly used it more than his sword.

Actually, no. I've seen monks break bamboo sticks with theit throats. It's part of their training. To eliminate as many weaknesses of the body as much as possible.

Besides, I doubt you'll get anywhere near his/her throat if they are that skilled :D

As Skullar said, martial arts don't mean **** in a real fight.

Try some of that spin-kick **** on a nightclub bouncer and see how fast he breaks your leg.

Muscle and weight will beat skill and speed any day.

And as for the bamboo thing: The cartalidge of the throat is very strong, so it won't tear under gradually increased pressure from a sharp object. That's why you need to slice or stab in order to cut someone's throat. A simple punch, if it's hard enough, will kill anyone.

......er.....Really, very untrue.....as reading any military theory book or witnessing any such incidents will show you. Being strong doesn't mean a thing if you can't hit someone, and being strong doesn't mean you know how to use your strength.....

...also untrue, if you strengthen the muscles protecting the throat, you'd have to punch ridiculously hard to get through the absorbtion effect of the muscle. The only way you could kill someone with a single blow with this is if they were totally relaxed, only then would you be certain of crushing the larynx.

[color=66ff00]Muscular people are much easier to hurt than fat or skinny people so people that work out are at a disadvantage in terms of resilience. Few people attack me as I'm a bony bugger and even landing a hit can hurt (elbows make great defence).

Anyhow if martial arts were good for nothing then they wouldn't have progressed to the point they are at today; a myriad of styles. If they were truely no use then the people who literally relied on them on a day to day basis in the pre projectile weaponary era to protect themselves and their families would not have lasted long to pass the arts on.

Their longevity and diversity is a monument to how practical they are.

My little 7 year old cousin showed me the meaning of skill over brute strenght. He was showing me some of his spinning kick moves (he's learning Tae Kwando - Yellow belter) when he accidentally hit my jewels. That perfect spin kick (how ever misaimed) floored me in less then 2 seconds :P

On another note, I have seen a special on National Geographic about Shaolin monks. Their members have been training since they are able to walk and have some really insane excercises and a steady diet of veggies. The result they all look really scrawny but just looking how they train their bodies (they hang themselves on their necks for hours/ smash her heads on sandbags for days/ smash their hands in everyway possible) I'd be willing to bet that they would really be more then a match to those big brawlers.

Of course there is always Gacie Jujitsu :D

PS: Samurai dont entriely rely on their swords, that's what jujitsu is for :)

[color=66ff00]No need to fear me, I study martial arts primarily as an interesting method to train my body, the fact that I can use it to protect myself and my friends is a bonus. :)

I've talked my way out of more fights which as the best practitioner will tell you is a much better victory.

What would that prove? Where would it get me in life? Nowhere! So there is no point in fighting just to see who is better. only point to fighting is to survive. Its not fun to fight, and its not fun talking about what could happen so lets not go there.

Fact of the matter is though, i dont care who would win between me and a monk. Im not in the art to kick butt, im in it to learn. Im in it to make my life more rounded. I learned it so if any point in my life i was physically threatened i could handle it.

Ive never really had to use it and that makes me very proud. I learned how to reason my way out of physical conflicts and learned that a life without violence is a happy one. The art bettered my life, made me more discplined, more appreciative of the delicateness of life. Ive also learned to respect the art i joined and all arts outside of my own. I learned to respect people, and learned that through physicial conditioning i can live longer.
So the art isnt all about kicking butt. Whether or not a monk could kick our butt is moot. Fact is the Monk would not resort to violence unless it was his last resort for his own survival, so your statement couldnt be further from reality. Maybe we would spar to learn off each other and to teach each other but we wouldnt resort to seeing who is better then who. That is just a ridiculous fight to fight.

So when someone has achieved something in life, try not to tear them down and say what they did sucked worse then something else. All it does is bring negativity to a thread, and what purpose does that serve?
Lets just all be friends and not attack our achievements. Usually when people attack others achievements it means they are not happy with their own. Keep that in mind when critisizing.
:)

Setekh, no need to fear us martial arts people, we are the least violent people you will probably meet.

can't remember the last time I was in a bona-fide fight. School probably. As Maeglamor said, I do Karate 'cos it's much more interesting than simply going to the gym.

At my place, people get hurt more often playing football than through sparring/drills etc.

you guys do  know I was only joking about the beat downs right ?:D

Magatsu: Nice work! :) What sort of level is that? (There's so many different grading systems that I've got no idea what's what.....) I study Lau Gar Kung Fu myself, and I'll be doing my green sash exam in September (FYI, that's the 4th grade, half-way to the first Black sash). How long have you been training?

 Very true. If you're any kind of martial artist, you try to avoid fighting if at all possible. You'd certainly never start a fight, though you'd be capable of ending one rather quickly... :D

my curriculum is:
White(you get this "free" ie; isn't earned)Red, Yellow, Green, Bluex2, Purple, Brown x3, Black.

I ought to be blue by now, but I missed alot of sessions a few months ago. Been training 'bout 18 months, on and off.

[color=66ff00]Basically what I'm saying is the belt is unimportant, it's what you had to do to get there that's important.

So your orange belt may look like nothing much but consider what you had to learn to get it.

As has been said, martial arts are not about violence; they are about perfecting the use of your own body and becoming one with the universe.....being able to kick someone's kidneys out through their nostrils is just a handy side-effect......
