Title: the 'reset form' button, does it serve any purpose?
Post by: Bobboau on August 02, 2004, 01:51:52 am
other than makeing people inadvertently erase a mesage that they were just about to post without any ability to get it back!
I just spent five-ten minutes writeing up a reply to some technical thingy involveing vertex buffers and the handeling of them in diferent APIs, and I went to hit the add reply button but I accedently hit the stupid reset form button, and thereby erased my mesage rather than added it to the topic. this isn't the first time this has happened, and I am left with only one question,
WHY THE HELL IS IT THERE!?
can we get rid of it, the convenience of clearing out the box with one click, (when you could just as easily highlight everything and retype(this haveing the advantage of being able to go ctrl-z and get your mesage back if you change your mind), or just not hit the reply button), is far outweighed by the inconvenience of accedentaly clearing out the box with one click and not being able to get what you were seconds away from posting back.

:hopping:  :sigh:

(I'm talking about the thing in the quick reply box thingy)

usually when i post i hit TAB then ENTER automatically.  occasionally i've hit tab twice by mistake... thereby erasing my message.

i don't mind it though *shrugs*.

I suppose a "are you sure you want to erase this form.. ..yes/no" check box would be a good idea - then the function is there for those that want it - and can be undone by those that don't.

Uhm, wouldn't that take longer than clearing the message anyway? It's not in the normal posting screen anyway (Probably never has been) and no one's complained.

Seems like changing the button to preview the message would be more useful.

yeah, that would be good,
but I still don't see what the purpose behind it is

yeah, I've done that a few times. Just, instead of having it erase the message, have the button point to Playboy or something. That way, when you hit the wrong button, you get a nice surprise instead of  nasty one.

;) ;)

I can't think for what reason it would have been put there, either. For people too lazy to hit Ctrl-A-Delete?

you know a usefull button to put there would be a button that transfers your post to the full post screen (with the big smileie box and all the other stuff that you might forget) just make sure it transfers what ever you have so far

That's pretty good thinking. I wonder if it would take much effort for the coding fellows. :)

The staff do :)

At least there's 3 or 4 threads in the staff forum of the "I'm going away, I may be back in a week or two" nature... some even longer than that.

And yep - I'm going as well. Tenerife at 3:00am on Tuesday morning. Numbers are going to drop significantly over the next month... everyones busy

Tenerife?
What the hell are you doing on Tenerife? That place is a total tourist hell. Carnage. Havoc. Never, ever go to Canaries, unless you enjoy the sight of geriatric convoys heading for YOUR favourite beach, where the little kids are peeing on the water/on you and the stench of slowly burning skin and flesh fills the air. Vultures soar above this infernal sight. Gravediggers are waiting for the evening to bury those who have fallen in this fierce combat for water and place to lay oneself which is not laced with broken glass and bad detective story book's pages.

I think the Reset Form is a throwback to the Good Old Days (ugh) when the web was young and people just discovered Form Entry!

And thus yon Form designers did readeth yon Ancient Scrolls of Form Designing and sayeth:
"Forsooth! There be a function to Clear The Form! Niftyeth! Let us slapeth that in Brother Yoric!"
"Righty-o Brother Bob."

And thus yon Curse'd Button Of Form Resetting did propogate through the ages to infest almost all web-based forms! And stuff. Eth.

Thanks for the explanation, Cyker. ;) And yeah, most of the admins are all in various places not here. I'll be the only one around for a couple of days. :nervous:
