EXPLANATION OF THE EXPLOSION PIC:
on board some random destroyer, the man in charge of the cargo bay says: i love explosives and the smell of fresh gasoline in the morning
he then lights his cigarette, drops it, and Alpha 1 gets to be in the middle of a very interesting incident.

An explosion like this happens to the Shivan Comm device. Must be something related to the linked usage of the Kamikaze flag and the Special Explosion option.

or

An infyrno-type warhead.

From what I can see from that picture(too) is that you will be using the predecessor(<-- after all these years I am still not sure I can spell this word correctly) of the Interceptor, the Crossbow.
You know, the crossbow was the original name for the Harpoon.

By the way: Why did not you post this screenie in a new thread? From now, nobody will be discussing the first picture. So it is basically hijacked from the original topic of Mystery picture #01

[20th EDIT] I seem to have written a long post. :)

Both assumptions you made are wrong. :)

And since no-one seemed to consider the first one a mystery image (although it is - you can figure out why if you know what TVWP chapter 1 is about) it'll be this one.

Yes, but the Crossbow doesn't have anything to do with the Interceptor in our current naming scheme. They might have used that name later on again, but this is too early for any Interceptor predecessors :D

Picture 1 - Binary system. Not that mysterious, I assumed you guys justr borked up.

actually the second has given me an idea for a cool beam effect.  is green (0, 255, 0) transparent in effects as well?  I think it would be....so by using different tiles you could have those things "moving" as in a particle accelerator beam.  anyway...good job TVWP guys.  both pics rock.

I don't think that's the mustang in the first pic.  i don't feel like checking, but was the cockpit in the mustang more rounded than that?  If you've read the X wing series then you know what an "ugly" is.  The mustang looked to be inspired by a TIE fighter cockpit and Y wing nacalles.  Loosely inspired by it, but that's what it reminded me of, i don't think that's a mustang in pic 1.  That being the case...there is a mystery in pic 1.

that 2nd pic is of a multi-star system. i can tell because those orb things are the same graphics as used for the binary star system in the first pic. i cant believe nobody saw this.

Had the same idea, but didn't want to say it outloud.

Figured if I kept it to myself, I could use it in one of my own projects and not have it seem like a rip. Alas. :sigh:

"Command!!! This is... this is a..... millionary sun system!"
Title: Mystery Picture #01
Post by: Black Wolf on August 09, 2004, 05:54:23 am
Isn't there a limit of 10 suns per mission? moreover, some of those aren't perfectly circular.
Title: Mystery Picture #01
Post by: TopAce on August 09, 2004, 08:08:24 am
Even suns don't have to be circular. If you scale them at 1:3 and use a 2:4 division, you will get something similiar. The only thing I do no understand is why isn't the screen completely white while you are facing the sun?

No... you can't. The suns only have 1 scale input, they have to be round. Plus that doesn;t address the 10 sunds per mission limit.

They could be BG images, but they're more likely some kind of weapon using the sun image.

You may be right. I never tried modifying the division of suns. It was just an idea. It apparently petered out. :D

You guys consider a bug a mystery picture? What does that tell us about the likely quality of the final project? :p

Actually, the mystery is where the damn thing came from.  Thanks for solving Black Wolf, you win a cookie.

The thing about suns not being circular is people using bad FOV values. If you set the FOV to anything other than ~0.39 you WILL definately have perspective distortion at your screen edges, leading to ugly, ugly "melonized" suns, planets, ships, whatever.

This was quite bad an issue with FS2 retail - i'm so glad I don't have to suffer from it anymore with SCP :D

I tried this FOV and it disappointed me.
Title: Mystery Picture #01
Post by: Lightspeed on August 13, 2004, 11:03:08 am
Well, my eyes cant take any FOV with perspective distortion.

That's also one of the reasons why I passionately hate the X² engine.
