Title: TV Rips question
Post by: jdjtcagle on August 05, 2004, 01:15:47 pm
On Nova, as some of you may know, they have TV rips for shows...

What's the current legal argument for downloading these things?

thanks :)

Its illegal to take content without the permission of the owners. This holds true for anything.

[color=66ff00]Technically it's illegal to tape stuff off the radio or to tape stuff off the wonderbox but everyone does it anyhow.

Oh well.

If you're in the States, you may (though its very, very unlikely) get into some trouble for this. Anywhere outside the States and you should be fine. Mostly, the MPAA (movies) and RIAA (music) folks crack down on the new releases, those they stand to lose money from, such as the latest and greatest blockbuster movie/CD. I think TV rips aren't getting that much attention from these guys, so it should be fine.

If your ISP sends you a letter saying "stop pirating or we'll kick your ass", just send them back a better saying that you recently downloaded some supsicious software, and when you did a scan with AdAware/Norton, it turned out you had some spyware/virus, so that was probably it. Most of them buy it. There are a ton of examples of what to do on the Suprnova "Legal Issues" forums, so thats the best place to ask for advice. But as I said, thats unlikely (that you will get into any trouble).

Yeah, I can see them getting peoople for downloading music and movies, but I just can't see them carring about TV-Rips.  But, I do live in the states and will probably not download them, BTW did you send me a email, yet?

It's illegal, as weird as that may seem. Just please don't post links or instructions about how to get it around here.
