Personally I reckon his victims should band together and sue him.

Who reckons he'd have a single penny of it left after the jury decided on the damages? :D Remember that in a civil case like this the award can be whatever the jury decide and the fact that he was convicted for raping these women is admissable.

He should give every single penny of that money to rape crisis organisations

People should learn how to STFU.

[color=66ff00]Not to be the sunny person in this discussion but he'll probably be found dead in a pool of his own vomit and a large mound of coke a week after he gets out.

Karma seems to get everyone in the end.

Basically they can go out and work but they have to spend the evenings and weekends locked up. I've never seen the point personally.

I think he should get to keep it. The fact that he is a rapist is seperate from his winning the lottery. If he never won, no additional (I mean, in addition to jail-time) punishment would be dished out. I'm in favour of rehabilitation, not continued punishment. The state assigned him a certain number of years to spend in prison, and obviously in their view, this was adequate punishment, and since we all pretty much accept the authority of the judicial system as the final say in criminal cases, I think that when he serves his time, that ought to be that.

...and I swear, if anyone interprets this as support/dismissal of rape on my part, I'll do...something very bad.

The point is that he hadn't served his time yet.

My complaint is that prison is supposed to remove you from society, not allow you to visit during the week, and run around in the general population of the place you violated the laws in.

This form of prison should be used for mior crimes like drug possession, or DUI's not involving casualties. And even so, shouldn't have Lotto available to the prisoners.

That said, he should be allowed to keep the money. Fair or not.... :blah:

I think this would cause less outrage were it not for the fact that the British Judicial system is a complete waste of space anyway, people can get 6 months suspended for mowing down an entire family whilst drunk in a car, and yet someone else can get 2 years for collecting lost golf-balls to sell for charity.

He's won the money now, so it's his, but I agree that the victims should sue for emotional and physical damage.

If he won it, let him take it.

Despite it being 'unfair', I can;t really see any good reason for letting a serious criminal keep a lottery win.  i mean, he's suppossed to have a life sentence (which isn't even life), and he's sauntering about buying bloody lottery tickets?

It's not that, so much as the sheer ****eyness of the situation.  There's a 1 in 14 million chance of winning the lottery - you're more likely to get struck by lightning - and this bastard wins it?   Life, truly is not fair.

Surely his chances for being hit by lightning are much higher now :D

well, I hate to have to defend such people, but I believe in rehabilitating them if you can, and if you can't, just punish them and once its over, its over. If we work on the principal that they ought to pay above and beyond their alloted jailtime, I'm sure there are tons of people who have commited crimes greivous enough to warrant never being able to earn any money again. So are you in favour of creating what essentially amounts to a slave class?

If you believe in God, then surely this is a sign. If the Big G has forgiven him enough to make him win the lottery, than who are we to question that. And if you don't believe in God, then at least you believe in justice and the rule of law. And if he was sentenced to X number of years in prison, and he is legally entitled to buy a lottery ticket and claim the winnings, well thats the luck of the draw then I guess.

He's not permitted any other form of gambling (There are specific rules preventing other kinds of gambling) so why is he allowed to play on the lottery?

hehe, that reminds me of a joke

a poor man, who has worked hard for several years and has just gotten married prays to God and says "please God, I have just eneter into a marriage, my wife deserves more than I can offer her, please let me win the lottery".

And nothing.

So now several years have passed, and his first child is growing up. So again he prays to God and says "God, my son, he is becoming a man, and I see a bright future ahead of him. But he deserves more than I can offer him, a proper education so that he can have a good future. Please God, let me win the lottery "

And still nothing.

So now the man is old, and his pension is just making ends meet. So again he prays to God and says "Look, God, I know I asked you for the lottery a few times before, and you probably have your reasons for not giving it to me, but I'm and old man now. I just want to live out my live in peace and not have to worry about paying the bills and saving money for food, please, please just let me win the lottery. C'mon, have you no mercy, why God, what have I done wrong, answer me!"

And the voice of God appears to him and says

open prison is the stupidest thing i have ever heard of, it defeats the idea of imprisonment altogether. and yes the english justice system has many faults as does the one here where serious crimes get less punishment. this has also happened here, the molesting priests in the borstles etc wernt even sentenced atall and just had to pay fines.

NB: The point of an open prison is, IIRC, to allow criminals to rehabilitate by allowing them to earn a wage through a normal job, before they are fully released.
