I need a few people to test this. It won't harm your system in any way, and all you need is the Flash plugin (Flash 5 or later plugin).
All I need you to do is download this file:
click me (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/hostedpictures/fileopening.rar)
In the zip there is a HTML file, a SWF (Flash) file, and two text files. Put the SWF and HTML files in the same directory, then open the HTML file. The rest of the instructions will be displayed in the SWF. Follow them, and let me know what happens (if the files show up when you click the button, if you get any errors, if you had to "double-click" to get them to open instead of single-click, etc.)
Thanks guys :)
~Stealth~
EDIT:
Please remember, that file1.txt should be placed in c:/ and file2.txt should be placed under c:/test/
-
It would be nice to know what it is :)
-
basically the HTML page is going to display the SWF, which will try to access file1.txt and file2.txt when you click the button.
-
Well.. I tried, but Swooh is being its usual self. Not letting me download it.
-
umm yeah the reason you can't download it is possibly because the file's not on swooh. i took it down right after i made the post because i forgot to add something to the file.
-
should be working now. i tested it on my systems and it worked, just want to be sure it works on a variety of systems though
-
Downloaded, but what you asked doesn't work :)
Doesn't work, dude
-
:(
figures it would be too good to be true :(
apparently the computers need the Flash player to work
-
Yep, I just get 404 errors when I click on the links for the text files :(
-
well any hope any of you had of a "Freespace Desktop" (see General Freespace forum) just went down the drain with this one.
apparently you have to have the Flash standalone player (which only comes with Macromedia's Flash authoring program(s) for this to work.
-
anyone with a little more time, if they could download the Flash demo (from Macromedia's website), install it, and THEN try running this?
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=flash
-
Downloading now, should take about 30 mins :)
-
you're a good man Flipside, a good man.
i don't care what they say about you
-
That pretty much is what they say about him...
-
AFAIK, everyone likes Flipside
-
we also wuv fishies, but thats a different story... :nervous:
-
Only with consent ;)
Anyway, the links on the Buttons are a little odd, that was what wasn't working. Text1 is looked for in C:/ Text2 is looked for in C:/Test/
That's where the error was sneaking in.
-
yes, but if you open the HTML file... the first page of the Flash movie tells you the four files, and where to play all four of them. it tells you that file1 should be in C:/, and file2 should be in C:/test/..... check my first post in the thread:
Put the SWF and HTML files in the same directory, then open the HTML file. The rest of the instructions will be displayed in the SWF.
so it works if you do that?
*waits with baited breath*
EDIT:
And Raa, when someone says "I don't care what they say about you" it's a joke. not to be taken seriously. at least over here it's not ;)
-
Yes, it displays the text file. Someone else should check this as well, since I didn't notice my error till after I installed the Flash player, but I think it may be my user error.
-
OK that's great.
just a few more people to test it
-
works as it says it should for me.
-
*starts getting excited*
thanks kode, flipside, and everyone else who's tried it so far.
just a few more people :D
-
Most of it worked for me, except it wouldn't open file 2. I double-checked that file2.txt was in C:\test as per the directions.
-
umm
what error are you getting? a 404? or is it just not opening at all. it might be that you have some kind of "popup blocker" or something, because it's supposed to pop up a new window with c:\test\file2.txt. check that and let me know :)
-
Yeah, it's probably a popup-blocker.
-
i'm not sure here, does this need the flash player installed to work?
cos if it does and that proves impractical theres a tutorial at virtualplastic (http://wint.virtualplastic.net/showtweak.php?tweak_id=129) about active desktops that might be helpful.
to be honest i aint read it (i been to the site abut 50 times and only just noticed it for the first time recently) so it might be no use at all
ok i just scanned through and you do still need another app to run programs without a dialog so i guess it's no easier than the flash method
-
We all like Flipside ;)
-
It works for me...... I especially like pressing teh buttons.......
click: this is file one
click: this is file two
click: this is file one

Can't resist pressing teh buttons...... :shaking:
-
OK so so far it works for everyone... except jdjcagle. cagle, what was the problem you were having again?
-
