As the title say, list the Shoot'em up you like, with the console.
Metal Slug series on Neo-geo
-
Red Faction, Halo, Metroid Prime, Time Splitters 2 and... thats it.

FPS' aren't really shoot em ups. Also, Time Splitters 2 sucks on so many levels.
As for mine, R-Type 2, Darius, Katakis, Turrican 2, Metal Slug 3 (personal favourite), Contra, Midnight Resistance, SWIV, Silkworm, U.N Squadron, Afterburner.
Damn, I could do this all day.
-
Time Splitters 2 rocked on so many levels. It wasnt the single player, it was the rock-solid multiplayer modes that they provided. I played it for at least 6 months without even getting bored one day of it.
-
I owned the game, multiplayer was ok for about five minutes before we all stopped playing it (8 people on an Xbox lan) when we realised that the aiming system is ****ing crap, the levels were boring, the weapons were inconsistent and the fact that there wasn't a jump button. I mean, no jump button, this was released in 2002 not 1993.

 agree with you 100%. I miss the Shoot-em-up genre. There were some great games in it.
BTW you missed Xenon 2. How could you miss Xenon 2!!!! ;)

Damn, you're right, I'm tired, I guess that's what it is. Xenon 2 was ****ing hard though, I couldn't get past the scond level halfway boss.
Super Nashwan power was what I aspired to have constantly, however, I was just not good enough, loved the music too.
-
Max Payne 2.
Feel
the
burn....
-
Truxton
Raiden 1 & 2
HOTU has a lot of good SHMUPS

Xenon 2 pissed me off cause I got to the final bad guy once and then died (after hammering him quite a bit too). What really annoyed me is that I bought the Bitmap Shades in the final shop (Seemed like a good idea cause they were really useful in Speedball 2) but all they did was make the screen darker. Had I bought something more damaging I'd have beaten the game!
And as you said the music is great. I have a copy of the Bomb The Bass Single version but I always felt something was missing :)
Anyway this thread inspired me to get a copy again and play it on my Amiga Emulator. Damn that game was great. Couldn't past level 2 though. Seriously out of practice :)

Cybernator, Probotector (called Contra 3 in the US IIRC).

-
Shoot 'm Ups: Absolutely NONE.
*mumbles something about brainless zombies being the only ones playing it*
*has just insulted half the board*
*doesn't really care... at all*
:p
Tactical FPS: ...some... Can't be bothered to list them :p
-
Obviously a boy thing. ;)

-
consoles only?
N64: Goldeneye
-
we're talking about scrolling shooters, not FPS's. In which case I vote for the old school Metroid games, although they're more like adventure games than shooter games.
-
I loved all the top-down aircraft shoot 'em up games. There's some kind of weird fun to be had in shooting ridiculous lasers that fill up the whole screen at a tank the size of a warship. :D
-
Tyrian for the PC.
-
Metal slug games are really good, Metal slug 3 is newest in series
and it's good
-
BURN, Tiara, you heretic :p
I'm surprised nobody thought of Parodius, who was a good lil' Shoot in its time
-
well nevermind.
-
i believe there was a duke or two for the GBA
-
Good old Metal Slug... does it have to be on a console? I'm a sucker for Time Crisis in the arcades. ;)

Good shout! That had the best laser I've ever seen, space-commies (er, I think - IIRC the last level or whatver ), big mechs, destructible scenery and bullet casings.
2nd level was a bastard witout the super-gun 'cheat', IIRC.

The top-down arcade flight games were the best. My absolute favorite is 1944 :D
-
Nemesis (http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/nemesis.htm) on the classic Gameboy

-
Contra. I practically grew up on it, and so did my family :D
That, and some boring Star Wars side-scroller thingy on the SNES :)
-
side scrollers?
oh in that case:
zero wing
afterburner
-
isn't Zero Wing the allyourbase game?
-
I can't even recall the name of one, but I played hundreds on both my bbc master (yes it was possible) and ZX Spectrum +2A. :p
-
GigaWing! (arcade or Dreamcast version...both the same thing)
-
For all you ppl thinking Max payn and stuff is shootemup, we mean 2d scrollers that feater tons of enemys, big guns and bad bosses. not FPSs. I grew up on the Raiden series but Metal slug 3 was one of my favorites
-
2d games suck so much it's not even funny.
'Course, there is always Custer's Revenge. ;7
-
Speaking of side scrollers, there's a really great Macross side-scrolling shoot 'em up for the SNES. What's neat is the fact that you can transform into fighter, gerwalk and battloid modes while playing.
-
Valkyrie Scramble is the name of this particular game.

That's the one. ;)
-
But only in the Megadrive format IIRC. The Arcade didn't have it.
-
i dont play consoles, but i'd have to say my favorite "shoot em up" is either one of the raidengames o one of the Strikers 194x games.
-
hmmm, where to start ?
Cybernator, Probotector (especially), 1942, Super Swiv and Harrier Attack (on Amstrad CPC464!) Super Aleste, Super Axley,
and about a millon more which I've forgotten.
-
Cybernoid on the speccy. I used to loe that game. It was bloody hard though :)
-
Tyrian, of course. Do you know that the creator is going to put it on the net as a free download? I simply love Tyrian. It has excellent plot, [for a shooter... and a good one overall] humor, explosions and space fleets. And easter eggs, too. And tourists... oh the tourists.
Metal Slug series is very nice... I, personally, prefer the first three ones, with a special emphasis on the first one. It just seemed a bit less over-the-top and more like a war, along with awesome endings. The fourth was nothing special, and the fifth was horribly incoherent. [and no Morden! HERESY!]
Raptor is a nice thing. Excellent graphics and gameplay, but the story is not even touching Tyrian's. OTOH, Raptor has less cartoony graphics, and is generally gritty and dark.
Raiden 2 is good, the deformable terrain is quite nifty, and the gameplay is fun.
Major Stryker is a very good game, with fun gameplay and "3D" in a way [the game was 2D, but you could be attacked from below, see enemy tanks moving on the ground when you are fighting in clouds etc]. Bosses are interesting, and the game is not something unholy in diffulcity. It also has great inter-level talk, and not in a "All Your Base" way. Go and play, I don't want to spoil the fun.;) HOTU should help you with finding it. [*cough*the game is about a decade old and unsupported by the publisher, guess what help it is*cough*]
RayStorm is fun, too, because of... 3rd level, IIRC. A massive space fleet. That kicked SO much ass. The rest of the game is good, too, but not as good. Includes extremely powerful last boss.
Banshee for Amiga... the gameplay, the gore, the graphics... a fine combination. It even has a kickass space level, with tiny alien cosmonauts getting splattered all over the space. Whee! Unfortunately my current Amiga won't play it, and the files I downloaded for emulator are messed up - the sound won't work and the last level [the said space one] won't load.
R-Type... because it's R-Type. What more can be said?
That's pretty much it for "pure" SHMUPs. There are also things that are borderline SHUMPs, like Gun Metal.
So bloody what if some of them are not for consoles? I like them.:p Many of them ARE console games, though.

I had it on the Commodore 64. There was something very odd about that game and playing it on an emulator just confirms that.
-
Never tried the C64 version. The speccy version was gold.
-
It was a good game, I meant more that the enemy design always disturbed me a little.
Ooh, I though of another one, Uridium 2 on the Amiga was absolutely brilliant.
