Is it all hype, or is this thing really serious?

Being a desert rat, I know diddly squat about scary weather.

Charlie is a very serious threat right now, with winds in the 115 mph range this morning at 5 am, and all day to pick up more power from the rapidly warming water.

While hurricanes aren't the most destructive natural disaster, they tend to flood just about everything they come in contact with.  Im in northwest FL, and was narrowly missed by Charlie's precursor, Bonnie.

Aye it does and a destructive one at that :p

But in all seriousness pray that this hurricane doesn't cause any serious damage......  they've projected it to do nearly 10 billion worth of damage in Florida from what I heard....... :doubt:

It's now a Category 4 and has landed well south of where it was expected to (I bet the people down there are in trouble). It's also supposed to be the worst hurricane since Andrew, which obliterated entire suburbs and left thousands in homelessness and poverty.

....hopefully it'll loose most of it's power before it hits me.

I wonder how Falcon is doing? It  made land fall just south of him, but it was also heading right toward him.

ROFLMAO!! Sorry, but I read this from the link Aldo posted and had to point it out:

[q]Packing winds up to 145mph (230km/h), Charley hit land south of Tampa and threatened to swamp the low-lying area with a 15-foot (4.6m) tidal surge.

The authorities say they have evacuated 1.4m people from at-risk areas. [/q]

So, lemme get this straight. Because of a 4.6 meter tidal surge, they're evacuating 1.4 meter people??

That's probably what Admiral Petrarch said before the evacuation of Capella.

Oh, so you're saying that I'm a know-it-all and you're retentive?

By the way, I think that's the first time I've ever heard that word being used without its comrade-in-phraseology, "anal". :p

Thought I'd update you on whats been going on the past few days........

Our house survived Charlies onslaught, unfortunately the electricity didn't last. Three days without electricity can change a person's personality (especially if you have no AC or means of cold beverages). Right now Im my family is staying over at one of my father's friends house. So Im be back soon! :)

Yeah I feel bad for those who live in mobile homes they got the worst damage as it is. Punta Gorda is a wreck (which is to do with the poor building codes they have) along with Port Charlotte. Pray for those now homeless families out there in shelters I feel so bad for them.

U guys are in my prayers, dude.  I lived thru Andrew and its nightmare, weathering a hurricane is stressful as hell.  Especially afterwards when u've lost power for over a week (thought I was gonna flip my lid).  I was just in Port charlotte last year and, although there was absolutely nothing to do in terms of nightlife (that I could find that one night, maybe not looking at the right place), I couldn't escape the feeling of complete laid-back-ness.  I was right up there by King's Highway and Rampart Blvd.
