Am I the only one whi feels that the Olympics are overrated? I mean it's always great when your country wins a medal and is declared best in the world but are the Olympics really all as spectacular and amazing as it is made out to be?
-
I dunno. Wait till I see how many Scots win a medal...........
-
You - don't - get - it, MP.
It's about all the nations getting together! Peace, harmony, love!
Umm.. well, at least its relaxing to watch OTHERS sweat while I'm laying on couch enjoying my beer ;)

Ah! The red pill. Sweeet.

I think the summer Olympics are over-rated. In the winter Olympics, I like to watch the figure skating.

We'll win the cycling, anyways.

Vancouver - 2010 - Winter Olympics - Hockey - Canada vs USA - All that matters.
-
Olympics? truthfully, I have "never" watched it...

Despite Thorn's disagreement, I tend to go with what castor said. That was the original idea anyway...although it's never worked out that way. Think about all the times the US and the USSR boycotted each other. Then tonight watching the opening ceremonies I heard that an Iranian wrestler had withdrawn because his first match was against an Israeli. Oh well... :sigh:
-
Bah. You're all just pissed because we keep beating you :p.
-
Did anyone else think the big torch-crane thingy looked kind of like a huge joint? I laughed my ass of when I saw that. This momentous moment, when the Olympics finally "come home", and the guy is lighting up a collosal spliff.
...anyways, I don't understand why they emphasized the modern aspect so much. I mean, its Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics. They have an opportunity like no other nation to highlight the tradition and ancient aspect of the games, andIMHO they squandered it.
-
I thought they paid homage very nicely to the old while keeping it modern. It was a nice blend.
-
Well, I went to the 2000 Olympics here in Sydney, I really got the idea that it was the finest athletes the world had to offer, all gathered in one place and having great competition. I'm one of those guys who got caught up in it all, sorry. ;)
-
Yeah, I can understand that. I also "get into it" because its such a unique event, thats one of the areas where I don't allow myself to indulge my cynicism. Toronto just narrowly missed getting the 2008 Olympics, in the end Beijing won, but AFAIK by just a hair. I can't even imagine what it must be like having the Olympics in your town Setekh, that must have been a thing to remember.
-
Definitely. So do the security actions. What the hell happens if this is the first Olympics game after 11th September, 2001?
-
I think all the people who criticise the olympics are forgetting the true, epic majesty of the sport within. The tremendous beauty and entertainment, the glorious competitive spirit.
I refer, of course, to the womens beach volleyball.
;7
-
Ah, truly the sport of kings.
-
True. True.
can we sell this as an ad idea to Bud?
-
I'd rather concentrate our efforts on getting mud-wrestling into the olympics.

Very true....

about the volleyball, right?

aldo_14... not mud-wrestling.... jelly-wrestling ;7

i used to be a swimmer, and when i guy can sprint 50 meters in 11 seconds, and pace 50 meters at 15 seconds it amazes me.

/methinks you mean 100 meters. I could sprint 50 in 11.
And, the Olympics roxor.

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. On a good day, I could pull a 12. I'm more long distance though, versus long distance.
Anyway, 11 ain't all that great, even for High School. The good people get low 10's or 9's.

No, in the air.
:nervous:

Having just seen the Mens 4x100m Relay I think we can pretty much accept that this topic is moot.

Who here would go running more if it wasn't for fear of neds?

Its not overrated right now. When those crazy, undetectable steroid drugs get involved it will be though.

I feel sorrt for the blokes who do the walking and have to practice through city streets. Well, as sorry as you can for someone who counts mincing as an olympic sport.

fuck!
Serbia (and Montenegro) just lost 3 events where they were the favourites. Basketball against Argentina (82:83), waterpolo and volleyball against I don't know who. Also, football, two miserable losses, and I'm talking silver platter here (5:1 in one game, and something equally humiliating in the other.) If nothing else, I was counting on a medal, possibly gold, in basketball.
But on the bright side, we got silver in air-rifle marskmanship.
Yay! :hopping: :hopping:

Soooo....Serbia got silver in the sniper competition?

Yeah, its the one event that our team was able to get lots of [l]target[/l] practice in ;) ;)
But seriously, this chick won, who apparently has held the gold for a number of years now. You know, she might actually come in useful in getting us a few more medals.
"Its the last minute of the game, with Serbia just hanging on to the lead. The opposing team is on the offensive now, and -oh my god, he's down! He's down. Ladies and gentleman, I have never seen anything like this before. There's blood everywhere now! And there goes the whistle. Serbia is the winner. The officials have chosen to ignore that conspicously loud bang sound shortly before the end of the match. I repeat, Serbia has been declared the winner! "

Actually, Holland's pretty Mediocre really - Vandenhoogenband and Inge Debruen are pretty much propping up the team in comparison to us and the yanks - I was talking about the South Africans coming from nowhere to win what was being billed as a two horse race effectively between Thorpe and Phelps.
-
the USA BBall team got beat by ****ing puerto rico
-
You needn't be terribly insulted by that. Puerto Rico is part of the United States....
-
yeah, they're not actually that good. During the last world championship (not the olympics, the proper basketball championship) they got knocked off pretty early, by either New Zealand or Serbia, I forget which. Didn't make it to the semis even.
-
I'll try to explain my complex opinions with an even more complex chart.
Women's beach voleyball -
Olympics -
-
Too bad they're not doing it the old fashioned way, like the Greeks did a few thousands years ago - in the nude.
Now that would be something to watch. Most Islamic countries would probably ban it, as would the US. But who cares, its all about the European chicks ;7 ;7

Women's beach volleyball: The sport where everyone wins.
Actually the women's gymnastics isn't too bad either. Especially those Romanian girls.

It's impressive how intellectual we can be when we want to.

well, yeah. they have put 16 as the minimum age. which just means that the demographics are slightly better. the ones I saw on tv yesterday was 15-16...

He wasn't working as a journalist, though - he faked his way in by lying on an application form for a job.
Of course, this is the Daily Mirror, so it's likely to be complete and utter bollocks.
They also have a habit of 'exposing serious security flaws' by publishing them for all and sundry to exploit, before claiming it's done in the public interest (in which case why not pass it on to the authorities and do a story after the event, rather than shout about it in the middle?)

Holland - Tiny tiny country
You & US - Big ass nations
Personally, I think we are doing quite a good job. You guys have practically an unlimited supply of sporters while we have to make it with only a few.
Hell, Australia ended up 6th IIRC... The US ended up 3rd. Both behind Holland. :D Sorry, but I just have to gloat when we beat the favourites :D

Holland Population: 16,318,199 (July 2004 est.)
Australia Population: 19,913,144 (July 2004 est.)
We don't have that many people. We're just damned good. :D

:nervous:
We lost to Iraq in the first football game :(
*goes in the corner and cries*
-
Hmmm, maybe if I could convince Dubya to invade Serbia, we could actually get a decent footie team together. It seems to be working like a charm.
Are you pondering what I'm wondering?
Afghanistan vs Iraq in the World Cup 2006 finals.

Now come on and play football against us... Or ice skating :D Or come play hockey against us :p
I do like it when Holland is in the same match as Australia at the olympics :) Cuz, granted, you are currently amongst the top. It's always fun to see how we do against the top :D And to win from them makes victory only that much sweeter ;);7
-
I dunno about anyone else, but I'm all for making Counter Strike an Olympic event.
"Not a good day for Team USA today in Athens! In a surprising victory, Holland pwnz0red the US after an intense de_aztec showdown! It was expected that the US's strategy of awp whoring would win out, but Holland's 1337 rushing skills and effective use of para spraying spelled the downfall of the US team!"

Actually, for the first time (in history as a matter of fact) Australia is on the very top of the medal tally. :D Go us!
I think we will be playing Hockey against you this olympics, which should be a decent match, as for football - well, Europe doesn't play real football, so you'd get your asses whipped :p.
And Ice skating? :wtf: Like speed skating? When your country's about 90% desert you tend not to be too interested in that sort of thing. :)

Well, it's about a strenous a 'sport' as darts & poker, so it's got the same chances of getting into the olympics
(i.e. - none)

On the side - Go Britain!
We have....one silver. In synchronised diving.
And all the main 'hopes' are in posh / traditional sports - yachting, rowing, horse riding, losing colonies, having a monarchy and tea-drinking.
Luckily i don't really give a ****, because I don't think any Scots have been involved yet.

J-O Waldner is teh own. He's been around for 20 years, and he still whips the chinese... the table tennis players in china now has grown up having him as an idol...
I've seriously counted him out of this olympics, but no... quarter finals now, by beating Ma Lin, who is ranked 2nd in the world...

Bollocks. Beaten by China.
-
and another loss for the Serbian basketball team, though I don't feel too bad about it, New Zealand were after all the second place winners (after Yugo) at the previous basketball world championships, and it was only a small margin (3 points). If we beat Spain and China, we're can still come out on top of our group.
...not that anyone cares I imagine.

Nice. That puts us 12th best in the world. Take that Guatemala!

Me too, if they even bother to show it, bastards.
BTW... Australia pulls ahead of Japan on the medal tally! We're now third (16 Gold, 11 Silver and 15 Bronze for a total of 42, pop 19 million) Behind the US (25 Gold, 29 Silver and 22 Bronze, for a total of 76, Pop 295 million) and China (24 Gold, 16 Silver and 12 Bronze, for a total of 52, Pop 1 billion ). Thus, if Australia had the population of the US, we would currently be sitting on top of the medal tally with 248 Gold, 171 Silver and 233 Bronze for a total of 652. ;)
-
Definately overrated. I dont watch them, I dont give a damn for the results, and I wish they wouldn't exist so the TV programmes would send interesting stuff.
-
I've been watching it more or less nonstop... :nervous:
-
A question to those who think they're overrated - do you guys play any sport yourselves? I think you'd change your opinions if you did.

(yes, I play a fairly decent amount of football alongside me daily cycling)
Well, on the one hand you have stuff like the Triathalon, Marathon, etc. On the other hand - Dressage and Synchronised Swimming.
Sometimes it's surprisingly entertaining (usually simply because its a race), sometimes it's astonishingly boring (marathon - obviously hard as nails, but it's like watching paint dry).

I'm prety sure we can accept that nobody really counts those last two as proper olympic sports.
-
You'd think any self-respecting straight man could appreciate a majority of the womens' games, among many reasons. I know that gymnastics rocked. As did Volleyball (May and Walsh.... ;7) along with swimming / diving to a lesser extent.
-
The female gymnasts are all about 14, though.
Oh, and the 50km walk / mince - not a sport. I appreciate it is still bloody hard, but it just looks ****ing daft.
