Title: Hardware Transform and Lighting
Post by: Forinec on August 14, 2004, 11:47:07 pm
I believe I've found what's been causing problems in my games lately. While playing Battlefield: Vietnam, I noticed the screen flicker, strangely similar to the effect I had in FSO. I've not noticed that happen before then. So I wondered, what do BF:V and FSO have in common? HT&L! Out of curiosity, I entered the command line -nohtl in the FSO launcher and found that the problems were gone. No more warped textures, annoying flickering, and freezes.

I've already updated my nVIDIA drivers, but that seems to have made things worse. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this odd problem?

I have anti-aliasing and anisotrophic filtering turned off, BTW.

What's your hardware?

turning off HLT will be worse then with it on. You can no longer use most new ships, campaigns, and things will run slower.

Athlon XP 2400+, 512 MB DDR, Geforce 4 ti 4200, Windows 2000.

The most frustrating thing about this is that it wasn't giving me these problems before I installed some Windows updates. And yes, I am aware that turning off HT&L makes the game not work as well, but the point is that it no longer flickers and freezes with it turned off. I would really like to fix this problem, as it's affecting my other games as well, such as BF:V.

Might be a heat problem with your card...
(Yes, even though it only happens with HTL)

In case it's driver related:
Try removing the drivers with Detonator Destroyer or a similar program. And try older drivers. Perhaps Detonator 44.03

Your DirectX might got messed up, try (re)installing DirectX 9.0c.

I reinstalled DirectX 9.0b from one of my games, and for a while FSO would run normally! Then, a few minutes into a mission, I would start to notice the hud and textures flickering again. Could it be the SCP memory leak problem? I'll have to do some more troubleshooting on that . . .

What AGP speed are you running at?

I'm running at AGPx8.

Oh, and reinstalling DirectX did fix the BF:V problems I was having. :) Well, it's progress.

Try dropping the AGP factor back to 4x.  I was having those problems with my R9600XT and when I dropped back from 8x to 4x, everything smoothed out.  You shouldn't notice any real performance drag from this.

Same/similar graphical problems in FSO? I'll try it and see how it goes. . . Thanks for the suggestions, BTW.
