Title: A Small Effort to 'Save' the VW Archives
Post by: kv1at3485 on August 16, 2004, 03:06:55 pm
Greetings.

I have (perhaps with misplaced zeal) begun to save the contents of the VW Archives and upload them elsewhere, just in case.  ETC by myself: a long, long time.

Mainly, I'm downloading the files, adding a readme if required, and zipping them up.

Now, my account at Swooh may only hold 100 MB worth of stuff, and I sense it will ultimately be insufficient for the task.  Not to mention the admins of Swooh may not be too thrilled about the potential bandwidth usage.

So I guess I'm just asking for any help that can be spared.

Of course, if there is already a plan in the works to transfer the VW Archives to somewhere else, please do tell.  It may very well be that my efforts are unnecessary.

They've been transfered (or are ready to) to the HLP archives. I belive its already been backed up, and they're just waiting for VW to go down before putting theirs up. Nonetheless, its already taken care of...

I downloaded all of those files to my local hard drive a few days ago thinking the same thing. Just in case they will be safe with me.

They have? :)

Even I didn't know.

:wtf:

No; no they have not.  Last update was that the admins were still working on an FTP solution.  Since they haven't solved that problem, nothing has been backed up yet.

But even if they have a backup, it never hurts to make another one.  I'd help, but I'm in the midst of moving back to college and have sporadic internet access. :blah:

I thought Steak said they had them backed up, and are waiting for an FTP solution before uploading... I'll look into it then...

Guess I'll keep '.vp' packaging and zipping up the stuff then.

We couldn't get a full backup, unfortunately. If anyone manages to get one, with uncorrupted files, please let us know and we'll integrate them to the HLP2.0 database.

:)

IceFire couldn't get FTP access to the server where the files are actually stored in order to download a full backup, and many of the files were corrupted when trying to download them from the Archives...

Yeah, I've found that out too.

I've been slowly going down the FS2 missions list in the Archives and (aside from the ones which are listed as missing) a small number of the .zip files that can be downloaded no longer function properly.

I have some of the missions stuffed into my Swooh account right now.  How much trouble would it take to transfer them to HLP?

Our idea was to make a script to transfer the stuff directly from the VW Archives database to the HLP database, but since we don't have full access to VW, the items would have to be added manually...

No, sorry. I wish I did.
By the way whoever needs those files from VW archives to post them on here just let me know sometime. I have also saved each download page with the exception of the campaigns section because we all know that just file names without a description can get confusing.

I doubt they did, since they were hacked right after the announcement was made... Some people saw a message posted under Remora's account, (not I) and others saw a huge logo... (I)... The database was apparently removed when it was hacked...

I remember, there was a message in the news forum threatening the VWBB. The hacker posted (under Remora's name) that there was an "exploit" in the forum. About a week later it was all gone. The only other person I know for sure that saw the message other than me was Snipes (aka Raa.)

It was seen by many more than just the two of you. In other words, admins were aware of it.

Yeah, some bloody hacker buggered up the forum and decided to be malicious so it was all gone. We were planning to back it up...and do it fully....but that ended that.

Very distasteful....still makes me mad.

Beg's the question, why'd he do it?  Was he just being a bastard or did he have it in for VWBB or what?  Did you ever get any info about it?

I still have several of the co-op missions and a few campaigns from before, but I also tried to leech the VW Archives and found that a lot of the files are actually corrupted now :(

Check the ones you download to make sure they are okay!

No, I think some of those files might have been corrupt from the start cause I got some versions of those files from a year ago and they have the same problem. I wouldnt know for sure though cause I diddnt download the whole archive a year ago, just about 1/2 of the missions.
