unpack the PK4 files should give a 60% speed boost

then there were some other tricks ... cant remember em though .... oh

r_gamma 1.4 in concosle

adds so much prettyness to the game :)

Weird, im just above the min specs and i can physically run it at Ultra in 800x600, with no visible stuttering.

I read a forum where someone said that. And then an expert in compression formats came along and completely shot it down. :D

Don't know whether or not to believe it now :D

[color=66ff00]Unpacking is only a valid idea if you're blessed with a boat-load of RAM.

Create a new text file, copy and paste the following into it:

seta com_allowConsole 1
com_showFPS 1
cm_backFaceCull 1
r_orderIndexes 1
r_usePortals 1
r_useOptimizedShadows 1
r_useShadowCulling 0
r_useTurboShadow 0
g_projectileLights 1
g_showPlayerShadow 0
g_skipViewEffects 1
image_usePrecompressedTextures 1
s_clipVolumes 1

Then save it as AutoExec.cfg and copy it into your Doom3\base\ directory. Voila, should get a major boost in fps.

Also you can turn ON vsync, the engine's capped at 60FPS anyhow.

Are you using an nVidia card or A Radeon?

Uuh... wow.. :eek2: That tweak along with downloading the the ati radeon beta 4.9 drivers allows me to play it at 1024x768 with ultra detail and going at 50-60 fps. Crazy.

[color=66ff00]If you're using a radeon then you can take advantage of the radeon specific texture manipulation code:

File (esprit.campus.luth.se/~humus/temp/doom3PerformanceTweak.rar)

Could give you a nice boost, performance seems to be varied though so it might not do a lot at all. Gave me about 5-6 FPS boost which is a Godsend in firefights.

Well, it works pretty well on my 5600, though it needs tweaking, but I'm enjoying myself too much. I played Doom on a 386 with a 256 colour VGA card, so I'm not too fussed ;)

The game itself is great, keeps a good feel of the original even though it's been revamped, barrels are still your bestest friend. And I still hate revenants :) Even the textures are similar in style and colour, and it's still just as infuriating when you can't find the key (or PDA in this case) :(

I miss the double barreled shotgun though, and I haven't encountered a Mega-Health yet, but then, I'm not even out of the UAC complex yet, and I think you will descend into Hell as per the original.

Whats your highest score in Super Turbo Turkey Puncher?  Go to the lounge to play it. By the way, I'm halfway through the game on nightmare.

[color=66ff00]I keep forgetting one simple principle: I'm not playing HalfLife and thus crouching whilst moving around does not make me harder to detect. :o

As such I've had my ass kicked a few times.

How'd you get a 512mb Vram card? :p

No no, seriously, there's a lot of forums that have some GOOD suggestions on tweaks and stuff that will make it run better for the ATI flavor of videocards.

Neowin.net's suggestions (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=199774&st=0)

Doing these changes, plus Maeglamor's attachment above, gains a lot of performance back.
The only thing that unpacking will do is possibly increase performance whenever a file is queried.  Basically whenever a sound file needs to be played that hasnt been cached yet, will take a short split second more to be transfered from the  compressed format to the swapfile.  it aint much but it can make things feel "smoother"  It wont help with FPS.

That's kinda the point in some places - running ultra detail generally means a lot of skipping as new files are queried that haven't been cached. Unpacking everything means that you won't get those skips - it's not about FPS but it generally means the same thing.... a smoother game (the difference between life and death in a firefight :))

As for super-turkey puncher - go back to it and get over 25,000 points. It's worth it for the comedy value of what happens afterward.

...and no, I didn't find that out on my own - I read it. ;)

I dunno. I'm slighty worried. I've been playing now for about an hour and no real frame rate drop. And I cant notice any difference in quality with or without the tweaks. Oh well. Can't Complain! :D

i did find this game a hell of alot less tweaky as unreal 2, which slowed down every time a new enemy apeared. im running at 640*480 and ultra graphics on a geforce4 mx420. the computer itself is pretty good, i just need a new vid card.  the game does a really good job at staying smooth. its slow but not to an unplayable level. il give theese tweaks a go and see if it helps any.

Unreal 2 also suffered from the setback of being utterly awful compared to the original in my opinion ;)

I think it requires at least a DX8 card to run with any smoothness whatsoever.

BTW, I've played through almost 3/4 of the game or so, and I must say the action is getting repetitive. It's still fun, and the weapons have a satisfying punch to them, I'm just getting bored of the
Step 1) Run and pick up health pack

Step 2) Realize it was a trap

Step 3) Have an imp appear above and/or behind you

Step 4) Kill imp with suitably big gun.

Chainsaw!  Run at them with the chainsaw!  *evil insane laugh*

I'm having a hard time believing some of the people say they're playing it on Ultra Quality.  In some interviews from the id folks, Ultra Quality is really made for videocards with 512MB RAM onboard, not system ram.  Then again I switched to ATI and this game bites the big one when it comes to having a Radeon under the hood without tweaking.

I'm running it at medium Quality, 1024X768, all options enabled except for Antialiasing, but I have turned shadows off and it's helped marginally.  My core settings in the Catalyst Control panel are set to "balanced" quality, cept that I make TruForm be enabled by application prefrence.  Everything else is high quality.
30 fps average, on a Radeon 9800 Pro, ATI Catalyst 4.8's with Cat 4.9 beta OpenGL Library installed.

carmack is a genious as far as effiecient game engines go, but he likes to keep his games true to the style he pioneered with the original doom. of course when the original doom came out i was playing descent :D i do like the general environment of the game, dark and scarey ambiance, and the occasional hallucination, or cases of getting posessed. its a beautifull thing *sniff*.

unreal 2 was lame in story good in effects, and it didnt even try to set the proper environment. i think id has beter graphic designers than epic or whoever it was that does unreal. they could have really done without the mission briefings. they should have just continued the original story instead of make a new one. i do like the uy2004 demo though, does open areas really good and combat is cool too.

but anyway graphics have goten too good, they need to focus on gameplay and environment.

I'm inclined to agree with Unknown Target as far as repetitive action goes. The game still looks great and oozes quality craftsmanship - but it's now becomming much easier to predict when to save and so forth... as you know something is going to jump at you the second you pick up that ammo over there....

Which doesn't make it any less startling or adrenaline pumping - just a little "couldn't they have come up with something more?".

I'd kinda like to see the denzins of hell stalking around the place in a "searching for you" manner - perhaps even allowing for some form of stealth and use of shadows to avoid them - rather than having them show up and know exactly where you are.

But that's just me. Bring on an Aliens Vs Predator mod.
Title: Doom 3 Rox!!!!!
Post by: Grug on August 21, 2004, 06:23:09 am
Indeed.
Hehe, an aliens vs predator mod would be quite frightening I'd imagine.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see if not a few more mods but a new AvsP game once the movie comes out.

I can't wait for the movie also :)
$10 on the Predator!
:D

btw, thanks for all the info on the better drivers etc.

Now got Doom3 and a few other games running heaps better.

On a side note, who else loves that kewl little flaming head figurine? :)

I played on Ultra quality with my Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB for a short time. You don't need 512MB to run at that quality, but it is rather slow because it's constantly swapping textures in and out of the video card's RAM. I did play the game the rest of the time on High quality (which supposedly requires 256MB of video RAM) with 4x AA and all other settings at max and got between 20-50 FPS.

The original wasn't all that great though to be fair. Looked nice but kinda hollow.

Anyone else think Doom3 is like Quake 2 with nice graphics and Half lifes sense of drama?

well i never got real far modding quake, q1 i did a bit of quake c, made some cool guns under several open source quake engines (the reason i quit modding quake1 was because the quake open source community couldnt consolidate their efforts). i did maps for q1 and q2, never finished em. i tried quake models, but none of em ever converted right. and thats about it, before that i was modding descent 2.

i run it fine with a geforce 4 mx420. im pretty disapointed at the net code though. the lag was so bad i couldnt even walk around, and im on cable. i remember playing quake 2 at 300 ping and still winning, play this at 100 ping and it runs like crap.

Nuke, what are your computer specs?

With my 2.4Ghz, 512ram and geforce 4 mx 420, I'm getting no more than 10 FPS in Doom3 (which drops to 3-4 when a monster shows up), and that's with 640x480 and everything turned off. I have the latest drivers from nvidia.com and the autoexec.cfg tweak earlier in this tweak (it helps a very little bit)

i got the same as you, but you might be using slower ram. also what i consider acceptable framerate others may not. framerate doesnt bug me so long as its higher than 20 fps, frankly i perfer a consistand framerate over one faster framerate.  so its just a mater of opinion. im just too cheap to buy a decent video card.

yea, that boss sucked. several bfg blasts and two hits with the soul cube and he was toast. my favorate aspect of the game was the shadows and the dark environment. reminded me of my descent 2 days. too bad it didnt have any of those invisible deamons that the first two dooms had.
