I was going through one of my missions I made with the original FRED2 a few minutes ago and was dismayed when it gave me this error:
Warning: Couldn't open texture "fighter06-01d"
referenced by model "fighter06.pof"
Then this one:
Warning: For ship 'GTF Hercules', detail level
mismatch (POF needs 5)
Now, whenever a Hercules fighter comes into view in Fred2, I have a framerate drop. It's getting to be very annoying. What could be the problem?
-
Well for starters, since some of the very first OGL builds of FRED2_Open that RandomTiger started, it has included a debug feature as standard... which can be turned off. Basically, the error messages you're getting, are telling you there is a problem with your model and/or table entry, which was there all along, but FRED2_retail wasn't configured to tell you about it.
As for the framerate drop, if you're using the advanced SCP hi-poly models, this includes a hi-poly Hercules, which may be having some slowdowns for your system.

Okay, so that's normal within FRED2 Open and shouldn't effect the mission itself? I tried it in HTL mode and, even though I got the same errors when adding a Hercules fighter, didn't have any framerate drops. Is there any new build or patch that can fix this?

FRED2_Open is in a Work-in-Progress state. A while back, some special features such as -mod directory support, were added in and ever since then, there's been a rendering bug for elevation lines and waypoint positions, and that's in the non-htl mode. HTL mode also displays model paths and dockpoints out of position, and will not open any mission that was generated in non-HTL mode. The absolute latest release, will ONLY work in HTL mode, which kinda takes the fun out of it. I use the FRED2_Open build bundled with this (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/C06172004.zip) build of FSO. It still has the elevation bug, but it works in OGL non-HTL mode and supports the -mod feature. As far as preventing the framerate drop from the Herc, assuming you do have the hi-poly model in the directory, I'd advise you remove it and use the standard one, if its giving you trouble.

i have no problem loading missions from non-htl mode into htl mode

It's a problem with the Hercules file in mv_models. It doesn't have a debris LOD, IIRC.
-
I also have problems with the Fenris/Leviathan model, causing FRED2 Open to crash whenever I add it in. I would like to use the standard models for those, but would it have any effect on the shinemaps or high-res textures?
-
Well, the Hercules model uses the standard maps. The hi-poly Fenris/Leviathan model uses some special textures, but there are high-res maps for the standard models in the Port, and some halfway decent shinemaps included in the media VPs.
Later!

Just move mv_models when FREDding, you don't want the hi-poly models anyway...it'll just slow down FRED. IIRC most of the stuff is being rendered using non- HT&L
-
or merely extract the fs2open_pxo.cfg
-
I never said I was done with that herc model, it just got included as standard, it references a map that doesn't exsist

I have the bug that i can't open a FC2 Campaign File with Fred2 Open. I have alway the Message "Couldn't open the Camapign File" Use the 3.5.5 Version of Fred2.
