Title: Bump Mapping?
Post by: Flipside on August 23, 2004, 11:55:39 am
Ok, I know you guys are absolutely up to your ears in it atm, but I was just wondering if anyone had looked at this at all?

I create most of my models with 256 colour Bumpmaps in hopeful aticipation of this anyway, but I just thought I'd ask and make sure it's feasible ;)

Don't give up hope!

But remember to keep ICQ bombing bobbaou! ;)

LOL I think Bobb is all wrapped up in Shadow stuff afaik, at least when he has time.

I know some of the other coders had expressed an interest in getting their teeth into some more visual stuff as well ;)

Ah well, as long as it's coming, I'll keep making these bumpmaps :D

I have the feeling he's not working on the shadows at the moment, but more likely finishing BWO, which should be released in a few weeks, in my guestimation.

ANOTHER set of textures? are we crazy? :D

*imagines FS2 taking up 4 GB of memory*
*shudders*

Stupid question:
Isn't possible to blend some features in a single texture?
I have no experience in graphics, but can't you bump map a shinemap?

I think the most ideal solution is to come up with our own texture format... ;)

*mutters something about rewriting it all to use Doom 3s engine*

How about creating multylayer textures support?
*runs away from coders*

I don't want to induce mass histery or blow your candle of high hopes, but IIRC Bob mentioned it several times that he wants to make a material system.

It would basicly encompass and fuse our whole multi-layer, multi-texture, too-many-render-passes system into something that will be a single format with a lot more efficient rendering capabilities.

Sounds good. As long as modding this game doesn't get so complex that it starts to drive away the less experienced people ;)

Question: How would you edit it?
Photoshop open? :p

No, I guess Paint open.

That sounds good, do that first.

There was something I heard several days ago.:doubt:

So could you please concentrate more on SCP? :) ;7

You could use da Gimp for editing.

Don't let FE² interfere with your SCP work, please, for the love of god.

Jebus fellas. Even if Bob retired from coding entirely tomorrow, look at what he's given us already - glow mapping, shine mapping, environmental mapping, and probably a crapload more I'm not thinking of just yet. If he want's to take a break from FSO to work on something else, we'd be more than a little ungrateful (and almost certainly expending energy futiley) if we tried to stop him.

I must admit, I agree there, as long as I know they are still being considered, I'll still work on the maps, I'm not 'demanding' them or anything, just want to make sure they are feasible and planned and that it's worth continuing to make the maps, that question appears to have been answered :)

Then i'd be perfectly fine with that. But judging from his post the situation is the following:

He wants to do both, but barely has time for one of them ;)

I know that situation all too well :sigh:

change "barely has" to "doesn't have" and you'd have it

"Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich.

But we have also run in to a small inflation problem on account of the high level of leaf availability, which means that, I gather, the current going rate has something like three decidious forests buying one ship's peanut.

So in order to obviate this problem, and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign and...er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that''s a sensible move under the circumstances"

Yes, I do have it at hand, and yes,I am that big a dork ;) ;)
