I've been trying to figure out a way to take screenshots in an avi movie file (like the FS2 intro and so forth). The windows screenshot function doesn't work (the AVI frames always come out completely black), and neither does FRAPS (the frames are almost totally green). Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Well, you can DL the Paintshop trial, it used to come with Animation Shop.
VirtualDub is also good, it's a decent AVI editor and I beleive it will let you copy a frame or two.

FS2 movies aren't in AVI format... unless you mean the ones we recompressed?

The recompressed ones, of course.

PowerDVD.

Any decent video player should be able to take screenies.
Zoomplayer can do it for example.

The reason it's green is because ALL modern video cards use a chromakey'd hardware overlay window for video-playback.
A little trick 'tho - If you open the video, and then open it again in a new window, the second one won't be using the video card's hardware overlay and normal screenshot softs will work :)
But using a dedicated proggy is probably easier...

 I can take screenshots. It's because I only watch standard cutscenes, no AVI or any complicated things like that.
-
If you're viewing them in Windows Media Player, turn off video acceleration in the Options and you should be able to take screenshots properly. :)

VirtualDubMod owns you. :)

May have been asked at least 100 times before, but: How and where can I reach the AVIed FS2 cutscenes?

The Freespace FTP has them.
