You can't post that Ford Perfect, you're infringing on 3000ad's intellectual property, and they're serious about these kinds of matters...

I really hate to bash an honest guy's work, but:

What is After Earth?

After Earth is a new exciting Science Fiction Universe from the brain of Michael C. Conomy. It is a fresh take on the whole idea of Science Fiction. Set in the year 4150 After Earth is the scene of a visous war raged between the 2 factions of the human race. The AU Allied Union and the other side UGC United Galactic Commonwealth.

Fresh take? Big bad guys like to shoot each other, um...what's new? It looks like standard scifi fare.

I really feel bad about beating up on these guys, but their project looks doomed. The ships are ugly, the storyline is cliched, and the website is ripe with typos. Good luck to them, but I really don't think they'll succeed.

I just wrote the most innovative sci-fi plot ever. Fear me.

- We have a interstellar human federation
- MEET: CIVIL WAR
- while battling some other weird guys of course
- hey, let's make this war a really prolonged and stupid!
- Meet: The Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time who are xenophobic, how original!
- ZOMG
- let humans, humans and aliens unite forces!
- Let's fight!
- oh noes, more civil war and half-assed rambling about prophecies!
- The Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time threat the future of the Earth!
- DEFEND EARTH
- win the Omnipotent Black Destroyers from Beyond Space and Time in one hectic anticlimatic (because game engine/movie budget didn't allow for some spectacular showdown), but lose Earth!
- feck
- well, prepare for sequels with even more Omnipotent Black Destroyers.
- more civil war in Human Federation.
- repeat, profit

Come to think of it, the main plot in FS saga was not that original.

Is this an actual game, not a very big mod? I think that I saw the screenshots of the levels made in Jedi Outcast.

Well, at least we've found the spiritual home for the GTD Cube.

EDIT; what do you think would take longer - the model or the concept art?

Maybe in this universe, space combat works more like real naval combat, where each hit from a single gun inflicts massive damage.

Site is down for me.

To be honest, Freespace 1 was probably the one that set the computer game 'standard' of a 'third race' that appears during a war. I could of course be wrong ;)
Title: After Earth
Post by: Ford Prefect on August 25, 2004, 11:02:35 am
Perhaps, but certainly not the idea of a super-powerful, unstoppable invader that ravages everything and pushes humanity back to its doorstep.
Title: After Earth
Post by: Flipside on August 25, 2004, 11:05:33 am
Well, the 'last stand' is a very very classic storytelling tool from as far back as humanities records go. The tale of Achilles is a good example. Or Olympus against the Titans, it's good dramatic stuff ;)

In fact, Lord of the Rings is an excellent example as well ;)
Title: After Earth
Post by: Ford Prefect on August 25, 2004, 11:21:17 am
Indeed. And the classic sci-fi example would undoubtedly be the Borg.

Anyway, I think more game developers should take a hint from Tachyon: The Fringe. There was a kickass sci-fi flight sim with no Alien Invader of Death.

Tachyon - or more specifically, Bruce Campbells' voiceovers - annoyed the tits off me.

- Alamo - 1836
- Camerone - 1863
- Rorke's Drift - 1879
- Beijing - 1900
- Imjim - 1951

Are you sure?

You have officially insulted every member of the FS modding community.

An automated *script* creating random universes and 3D models could probably do better :D :p

I have a job.  It pays me money.

And I wouldn't want to have to work for some doss twat whose best design could be made with 3 lego bricks, and honestly think that constitutes professional quality.

Um, to be fair - 2 isn't exactly true - I've only 'proven' myselft in the context of making crude wee boxy models of starships with no moving parts, with fairly basic maps, which isn't much in the grand old scheme of things.

ooh, whats that second pic of? reminds me of the pillar of autumn...

Anywho, when I saw the First pic of one of their ships, I nearly choked. 2 weeny little guns mounted on a Boxy, undetailed mess of a ship, with all the rest following pretty much the same idea. Then I read the Storyline. You know, you can only use that idea so many times before it A: is no longer interesting, B: no longer allows for expansion, and C: Just plain sucks. That happened like 1-2 decades ago. :doubt:

Squidgy UV-mapping, underdetailed

http://www.aldo14.f2s.com/portfolio/carrier2.jpg
Un-mapped (yeah, it's all very nice if the shape looks Ok, but what's the point if it's never completed?)

http://www.aldo14.f2s.com/portfolio/s_claymore5.jpg
Some Uv-glitches, mapping is a little underdetailed, never completed adding the cockpit.  That was the closest to being something I'm 100% happy with, though.

Hollewanderer noticed the same thing I did; the so-called "hangar" shots were made for Jedi Outcast. Notice the pic below. There's Kyle Katarn sitting right in the middle, along with the series' signature HUD.

They also have the worst faster than light travel system I've ever heard of. Bubble Travel (http://afterearth.m-cgi.com/info/bubbletheory.php ) It's like he's throwing in a black hole just to have it. I doubt he even knows it's a star.
