Title: Internet Meltdown Predicted for Tomorrow
Post by: te27ch on August 25, 2004, 07:12:15 pm
Got this from Slashdot today (August 25)

http://it.slashdot.org/it/04/08/25/1533213.shtml?tid=172&tid=95&tid=1

I'm actually scared of it, because it's not some "President Bush says today that terrorists could be planning to attack this nation using explosives implanted in kitty litter" type of thing. Just hold on, folks. Oh, there's also a possibilty that it MIGHT not happen too.

Somehow I feel shutting down a large section of the Internet, whilst annoying, wouldn't personally feel to me as though it were a 'Terror' attack ;)

More like a 'Bloody Annoyinger' attack :)

cyber terrorists?

In saner times we called them hackers.

The Bush administration has issued dozens of terrorist warnings in the past (anyone remember that run on duct tape and plastic sheeting?). If anything happens it is probably the government "fixing" it.

EDIT: Besides, if something like that does happen, there is nothing you can do about it.

Replace "cyber terrorists" with script kiddies.

According to a Tuesday RIA Novosti report, Russian security researcher Yevgeny Kaspersky, founder of Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs International, said a strike against political and financial sites was expected on Thursday.

"The hackers who have proclaimed 'electronic jihad' have enough experience and resources to paralyze the Internet for several hours at least," Kaspersky said in the report.

"The e-jihad has been discussed for years, but an undisputed attack has yet to surface," said Ken Dunham, director of malicious code at iDefense Inc. of Reston, Va.

For the most part, coordinated "hacktivist" attacks have been "more talk than walk," he added.

 This stuff is pure jargon-gold :D

e-jihad?

This is really going too far. Besides, who cares about financial websites being shut down. Oh no, my stock portfolio will plummet three one-hundredths of a cent! I'll be destitue. My two shares of Microsoft will be worthless! worthless!

Also, notice how the guy warning about this apparently works for a internet security company. Might he be exageratting the threat just a tiny bit in order to make some quick cash? Why yes, that may just be the case.

Besides, striking at the Internet is 'targetless', they'd harm Muslim organisations just as much as Christian ones, as it were. So unless they plan to wage war on more or less the entire Internet community, regardless of faith, colour or creed, it's a really very odd thing to do :)

Too many. A great number americans have a tendency to believe anything the media/government tells them (not that I'm saying that of anyone here, but in the real world).

I've heard the news services hyped up what the Russian company was releasing, supposedly the original stuff was about e-jihad claims from some middle easterners against Israel set for the 26th. There's something about that in the Slashdot commentary.

Not only was this posted on a site i've never heard of, but the prediction comes from a net security tool.

I'm gonna have to call bull**** on this one.

Besides shutting down sites isn't very useful.  You'd want to gain access to a corp or gov secure network rather than crash the front page.

You're system will slow down horribly, programs will start to stutter, your firewall will go nuts warning of attempted instrusions, ad-aware will pick up triple+ the usual, and eventually your system will crash horribly.

Oh, wait....you said tomorrow

"shut down the Internet"

the security they have at the root DNS servers both physically and software is unbelievable.

and really, that's the only way you could shut down the Internet... unless of course if you snip the thousands of fiberoptic lines across the atlantic and pacific ;)

How do we know the internet isn't down? What if the very instant the internet went down, there was a rupture in spacetime and we were plucked out of this world into a contrived environment created by super-intelligent life forms, where we will live out the rest of our lives oblivious to the fact? Then once we die, we will be given rebirth as all-powerful overlords of civilization.

What frightens the populace about this is not so much the Internet itself going down, but the Banking & Stock VPNs that use the Internet for their hardware going down.  It is a stated goal that "The Terrorists"(all-inclusive, every group) want to disrupt/kill as much of the US economy as possible.  The good thing is that they've got to become Us to get Us.  Us being the IT community(networking gurus that know more about the Internet than God), and anybody that has the knowhow on how to bring down even part of the 'Net is on the inside and beyond suspicion.
