Does such a thing still exist?
I used to have a domain name reggied which mapped to my homesite (actually me 5-a-sides teams' site), but no longer. (now some bastard has stolen fc-mabozaritchie.com, too)
would be nice to have one for ****s and giggles :)

if there was such thing as free domain name registring, it wouldn't last long from all the traffic and requests it'd get.
-
uhhhhh if you're looking for something like *your name*.*whatever*.com, there's still sites that do that. but it's hardly "your own domain" ;)

It's just the name redirect i'm interested in, to clarify.

right, but if you're looking for www.aldo_14.com or any other root domain, you're not going to find one for free. there are companies that offer aldo_14.hardlightproductions.com or aldo_14.whatever.com. one i registered about two years ago was www.stealth.mirrorz.com.
let me know

I didn;t think so. I used to have 2 domain names... one was with my then-ISP (this was just a basic dailup one, i.e. pay-per-minute at normal rates) www.world-of-aldo.co.uk, and the second was simply a redirector which linked the address www.fc-mabozaritchie.com to a page on the former site.
In both cases it looks like both companies have either dropped that service, or simply went under.
(I lost the 2 names because I didn't want to pay a reggie fee after a year...after all, would you? :D )

ooh. but you had to pay for them regardless, right? maybe not directly, but in some way or form.
i'm still positive there's no place you can just go and register a domain for free though. InterNIC owns every single domain in the world, and leases them out (as far as i know), so somehow, someone's going to have to pay InterNIC, whether your ISP does it (some ISPs give you a domain when you sign up) or someone, but no one's going to do it for free.

Had to pay after a year to keep it/either, yeah. For one of them (the former) it was part of an ISP package, but I only had to actually use that account to connect when I updated that site (i.e. for FTP access). So it was effectively free, because it cost the same as my other dail-up account.

Those are sub domains and usually don't come free anymore in most circumstances, they cost money with some hosting providers, some offer a certain amount and some are unlimited.
