In recent builds I encountered a strange phenomenon. Often caps arrive back to front and maybe upside down. It doesn't matter if I'm host or client.
I figured out that it only applies to the shivan caps Lilith, Ravana and Sathanas. Until now it didn't occur when other shivan caps, terran or vasudan caps arrived.
Nearly a minute after arrival of Lilith cruisers they turn to correct orientation, Ravana and Sathanas do not.
Maybe it's some kind of visual effect, because subsystems seem to be at the correct positions.
Here some screenshots:

Are you playing in OGL mode?
-
I also noticed something just like your second picture happen with a Triton in the main campaign. It was really wierd.
-
Yes, I'm playing in OGL mode. There is no way to play it in D3D.
Btw, it happened with other caps, too.
-
This is apparently an old OGL bug. A while back, I was play-testing the Inferno R1 SCP patch (not yet released) and kept encountering a ship that was always rotated 90 degrees on its Y-axis, then flipped upside down. Fighters could fly right through the hull. I updated to a newer build, and the problem went away, but that was several months ago, before Bob introduced the new internal model format. Which build are you using?
-
I tested it with the following two builds and in both same problem:
01082004_fs2_open_r
fs2_open_T-20040822
I also encountered some kind of flipping. This occured in a TvT where a ganymede station rotated around it's y-axis at random.

It happens in D3D too, unless they fixed it from the last time I played Kazan's multiplayer.
