Hey all,
I'm new to these forums and I'd like to stop by and say Hi to you all.
Heres a little bit about me:
I'm 18, 19 in a few weeks. I come from the U.K. I currently go to Uni studing Games Design and Programming.
Over the past few years I've modded for many games, mainly Halo, C&C Generals and Half-Life. However ever since Freespace 2 came out years ago I've made little mini missions and campaigns for my friends who also had the game.
When I went to Uni and met knew people who also had the game I started modding and making maps more and more for FS2 since they wanted them.
Since then they've said I should do a full-blown campaign and so I took there advice and sat down and thought: "Hmmm maybe I should?"
So I played through the FS2 main campaign over and over and over till I got to full grips with the story-line and hence I've chosen to make a campaign from the Neo-Terran Front's point of view.
However rather then just play through the game to the point were the NTF gets defeated I've decided to make it so at some point the NTF wins there fight.
This was some two months ago and since then I've written a 64 page plot-line full of ideas and events etc. My dorm mates call me crazy lol.
Anyways since the plot is now 100% complete I've started making the maps for the game, I now have a website up and running with a few screenshots, more information and a forum were you can ask question or vote as to what you would like in the game. The address is: //www.freewebs.com/neo-terra
I just thought I'd bring this to you all since your here you must like FS2 as much as me :)
Also I'd just like to say that before posting this I have read through posts over the forum about other Fs2 mappers and crew who are busy so am not asking for any help at all, I'm just making this campaign for the enjoyment of the FS2 fans.
Thanks for reading.:)

:welcome:
Welcome to HLP, Gai Daigoji! Glad to have you with us! :)
Now, you've got an interesting idea there, but I will say this: there is a project here that is doing something very similar - Neo Terra Victorious. Check out it's website and forum here. I don't know what they're doing precisely, and I've no idea how far they've progressed, but they're pretty well established.
While we love new members, and want to do everything possible for them to stay, we tend to discourage people from starting major campaigns of their own, as they tend to get half-done (often less) and then ditched because the people involved lose interest/have no time/try to do too much etc. which means that we don't get to play it! For this reason, we tend to suggest that people join an existing mod team and help finish it before moving on to something else. NTV may be a good choice for you (they don't seem to have done much recently, so your enthusiasm may give them a kick to get them moving again ;)), but have a look at everything to see what intrigues you.
That said, good luck with your mod, and I hope to hear more about it soon! You can post any missions/campaigns you've already done in the Campaigns forum, and people will test and review them for you.
Enjoy your stay!

Derbyshire, East Midlands. How about you?:)
And pyro-manic, thanks for the welcome. But theres no need to worry about that - I've never given up or stopped a project yet
;)
-
Check out Neo-Terra Victorious as Pyro said. If you can prove you can FRED they probably wouldn't mind another FREDder anyway :)
As for the rest of the campaigns and missions you've done can you make them available for download? Never hurts to add more missions to those available to the community :)
Check out the SCP while you're here. I've noticed that your screenshot appear to be using the retail version.
-
I don't think he knows what the SCP is ... Source Code Project. (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=50)

Well I've just downloaded the SCP, so I'll start working with the new stuff that comes with that now. No more retail ship models :D
*EDIT: Just about to upload these new screenshots but thought I'd place them here for your viewing :)

Enjoy :p

Why don't you enable specular lighting and all the other whiz-bang graphic effects?
-
If your computer is strong enough, download the newest MediaVP and Bob's high-poly Deimos.
-
You've written a 64-page plot line AND fredded 7 missions in the space of just two months? :eek2:
Wow. Something tells me we've got another Blaise Russel here. :)
-
FREDing 7 missions in two months is not a great achievement by itself, but writing a plot line of that magnitude on the top of it is impressive.

TopAce is right, FREDing the missions doesn't take me that long since I know the direction am going in. However the 64 page plot-line took up most of the two months as I had to play the FS2 game god knows how many times to make sure I didn't miss anything out. I must of missed loads of hours worth of sleep, but I think when the campaign is completed everyone will be pleased with the end result :)
EDIT: Oh, I don't have any super-douper effects as the computer I have at Uni ain't that fast :(
-
Well props to you, good sir. I'm always impressed by the super newbies that come in here. Normally someone would tell you you might want to help someone else before making an uber campaign of your own, but you obviously know what you're doing and have a big jump on it already, so all the luck to you.
-
My only comment besides wishing you luck is to say that the first screenshot is just crying out to be taken again using the high poly fenris and the high poly deimos :D
-
Using a half-high poly original fleet, and a half not is kind of silly though.
-
How the Hell Did I double post this?
-
Yeah geeze guys, get to work already. ;)
w00t, a double post! (looks up)
-
sounds good
-
If you want to really impress people, with a user name of Gai Daigoji, you should be working on a model of the Nadesico, or better GEKIGANGAR 3 !!! (plays every Gekigangar song I own in tribute!)
BTW Gekigangar is a parody of me, but I take it tongue in cheek :p
-
In this community, name less counts than nationality.

Hey everyone.
I'm just about to upload these screens but I'll also put 'em here for you to take a look at. Enjoy :)

Nitpicks:
Screenshot 1: "Your orded" should be "You are ordered"; "personel" should be "personnel"; and "prepaired to defend ourselfs" should be "prepared to defend ourselves"
Screenshot 2: "Begining" should be "Beginning"; and "borded" should be "boarded"
Screenshot 3: "spaired" should be "spared"; "were" should be "we're"; and "Cruiser" should be "cruiser"
:)
-
I also noticed the spelling mistakes, but I didn't dare point them out.

Grrrr, nottingham here ;)
-
Thanks for the spelling corrections people. It's hard to keep an eye on it when your typing and scripting at once :)
-
Also in that 3rd pic, I assume the first line was intended to be sent FROM the cruiser, but it wasn't in the game's playing field at the time. In that situation, the game always defaults to "command" as the message source. Either that, or you gave the wrong sender in FRED.
-
That's why you should use the 'Normal' priority for non-vital messages. It will not be sent if the assigned ship is not in the area, and you will notice it is missing.

Hmmmm, I didn't notice this. Thanks TopAce and Trivial Psychic for pointing this out. :)

Just a quick update:
I gave myself the task of finishing missions 8,9 and 10 by the end of the week but I've finished them already :)
Here is a quick screenshot from mission 10:

More updates when I have them.

Grammer errors left and right (should be "Gamma" in the text, and the objective should be "Destroy GTC Hellfire" That mission looks crowded too, but that's far from certain. Otherwise, it's nice to see continuing development on something so new.

Those little errors have been taken care of already, the screen shot is about 4 hours old as I haven't taken a new one from the updated version of the level. *Feels lazy* :D
-
 Gammer wing
Gamma, as said before. And Destroyer -> Destroy. And there -> their.
Incidentally, Hellfire is something you'd call a Shivan cruiser, not a GTVA one. :nervous:
-
The Hellfire was a Demon-class during the Great War.
-
No it wasn't; at least, not that I know of. I do know for sure that Hellfire was a Shivan cruiser group in Silent Threat.
-
I was talking about a multiplayer mission, I can remember that you had to defend two science vessels there. Hippo will enlighten us both, if he visits this thread and has a keyboard at his disposal to write a response.
-
K, I found both missions. The Demon is in M-Unstoppable.FSM ("Unstoppable"). The cruiser group is in md-05.FSM ("Hellfire").
-
Quick update to let you all know that progress is comming along, I've completed a number of new levels over the past two weeks and changed some of the other ones slightly.
Here are two screenshots for your viewing pleasure:

Enjoy :)
-
'Their' should be 'they're', BTW. And dump the second 'oh,****!', it sounds odd to have it repeated so quickly
(god, I'm picky today)
-
Advice: Do not scale the nebalae so much. That neb11 is scaled at at least 7-7. To make more pretty(or prettier, I don't know the correct form) backgrounds, use the scalings between 1 an 4.
-
They'd be fine if the banding wasn't so apparent. Is this a stock campaign, by the way?

Sorry, I dunno what you mean by 'Stock Campaign' :)
-
I don't understand that either, so do not worry you do not know something that you think is obvious. :D
-
FS2 retail, uses only "stock" (default) ships, weapons, etc, and doesn't use any SCP-specific features is what I mean by stock campaign. If so, you might want to use some of the better nebula effects. If not, well, what you've got is fine for atmosphere. People love to complain about the background in still shots, but when you are playing it's rarely something that you notice. Unless you're lightspeed, apparently ;)

Ahhh, I see what you mean now.
Well its not all 'Stock' ships. I mean the bulk of the campaign uses most of the FS2 ships but I've also got permission to use some player created ships.
When it comes to the SCP, I do use it to play but when it comes to creating new levels I like to stick with the normal FS2 FRED. It runs better on my Uni comp than the SCP FRED. :(
-
A heavily scaled nebula image is not only disgusting at stills ... :ick:
I always notice dirty background ... the very first thing I noticed in Derelict was the EXTREMELY neglected background. Later, it turned out the whole campaign was neglected. :p But that's no topic right now. :)
-
The SCP FRED is called FRED_Open, unless I have been duped by my peers.
-
Actually, the SCP FRED is a synonym for FRED_Open.

What is it with the Brits and spelling, anyway? I mean, y'all lay claim to originating the bloomin' language, so why can't you spell properly? No wonder the 'Mericans are policing the world...
:nervous:
*runs from barrage of marmite packages and "Beware the sleeping policemen" signs*
:p All in good cheer, of course. :)
Gai (err, how does one pronounce that, anyway?), your persistence is very commendable. Don't get discouraged, eh?

Hi, thanks for your support :D
And the word "Gai" is pronounced the same as "Guy" :)
-
In defence of natives: You find it far more difficult to spell a word you had known how to pronounce and used them before. English spelling is in my opinion easy because when I learn a new English word, I learn both the spelling and pronunciation at the same time. Natives, in contrast know how to pronounce this and that word, but they are left on their own when they have to spell it. Some cases are quite misleading, let's take 'Door' or 'Look' as examples. I am curious who can figure out the spelling of the word 'mayor' on their own.
Returning to the actual topic, the project: Spelling mistakes are not disturbing when they are in an in-mission message until simulated speech pronounces it as it is supposed to. 'Your being chased' and 'You are being chased' are pronounced the same way, which hides the spelling mistake when you are not reading the message, only listening to simulated speech.

Huh. Very good point. I quite concur, although in my case, my bookwormishness prevented the lack of spelling knowledge. ;)
