Ok, I'm sorry to devote an entire topic to this, but it's always bugged me: I hate it when people call Freespace 2 missions "maps". Like, when you see a new guy or whatever come along, and he calls it a map, like an FPS.
People: It's called a mission. Not a map.

I agree.
Why this thread now, though?
-
The only Map that FS have, is the GTVA Space Map :D

Cause I've been reading through the many newbie posts, and in pretty much every one they've called it a map, and I got fed up with it :D
-
Yeah, I noticed that too, this isnt Warcraft its not a map editor, its a mission editor. Good call Unknown Target
-
Heh, I often used to catch myself typing map, thinking 'Wait... that doesn't sound right...'
It doesn't make sense to call them maps, because a map is landscape and buildings and things. But Freespace missions are... well, yeah. They're kinda in space.

they are missions but some newbies calls them maps,
and it's don't bother me
-
........... why does it matter?
-
Like I said, it's a pet peeve. Freespace 2 missions and Unreal Tournament maps are different things, and I think they should be treated as such.
-
Right, but the rest of us don't generally care.

quite true... they're missions!!! not maps!!!
-
Meh, if someone says map, I can probably figure out that they mean 'mission'. :p ;)
-
My pet peeve is people who ***** outloud about other people who say map instead of mission.
*contemplates making a thread about it*
-
Well, they ARE essentially the same thing...
-
? Like everything is a map..
NO, i'll leave it here :nervous:
-
I'd struggle to give a flying **** about it myself, to be honest.
-
Well, there is a reason to this, 'cause the maps data folder is where textures for ships go, and not FRED scenarios, or what are technically called 'missions,' because they go in the missions data folder.
"Hey, everyone, I made a new map!"
"What for? Ulysses? Hercules?"
"Er... escort."
-
*agrees with UT...*

too bad it doesn't, because then I'd have another way to easily piss you off.

:wtf:

Imo the difference between Mission and Map is easy.
A Map is a thing, where you haven't any obejctives. Like Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch
A Mission is a thing, were you have Objectives that you must fulfill.
The Assault Mode in UT2k4 have Missionobjectives, so thats a Mission, not a Map, but only a few know it;)
In DM you haven't a objective and thats a Map.
I don't see a "Mission" in FS2 MP where you must only Kill other Players, imo it's a Map.

Uh... no. A map is not a gametype, it's what people play in. Think about it; if you have a treasure map, and it's got a big red cross on it where the treasure is. So, since the objective is obviously to get the treasure, that piece of paper you're holding is suddenly a mission? Doesn't sound right to me.
They're called maps because that's basically what they are; a map of all the landscape and objects and things.

/me thinks Blaise Russel is funny, but still thinks you guys are stupid for complaining when it's so blatantly obvious anyway, that it doesn't really matter.
-
/me thinks that Knight Templar is a grumpy guy.
It's just an annoying thing. When you say you make a map for FS2, you lump FS2 into the FPS genrea, which probably isn't a good thing, imo.

I've said the same thing myself about Descent levels. To me, a "map" implies the two-dimensionality of first-person shooters. Missions in Freespace and Descent mines are fully 3-dimensional. To me, "map" is an insult :p.
