*thinks*

so if a baby dies cuz of a miscarrage or sumthing, you can clone a the same baby and have it. Humm....

It's almost certainly complete and utter bollocks - he 'revealed' this at a press conference in a hotel room, not an academic journal is proper research would be.

Seems a bit morbid to me, replaceable children......

Oh well, science goes where it goes, and you'll always get attention whores. I can see the medical use, but what happens when children start reanimating their parents as their own children etc? Things could get messy in the gene pool :(

Yea, tell me about it. I dont really like the way some of this cloning stuff is going. I hope it never gets to be like that Schwarzanegger movie "the sixth day" where people will be cloned with their memory too.

The six day was the most stupid movie I've seen in awhile...

Having just seen Godsend, a terrible, terrible movie, there is but one inescapable conclusion: perfectly normal children, when cloned, will turn into murderous little hellspawns, with a psychotic disposition and a haircut that just screams "evil".

Anyone remember when that cult claimed to have cloned a baby named Eve a while back? I think they were Russians.

I had a 'debate' (if you could consider it such) with someone in a class of mine a few months ago that was similar.

My arguement was that a clone is effectively like an identical twin when the egg splits but this other person insisted that since it was an artificial process "clones have no souls." Of course this guy did fancy footwork when I mentioned people acted that way about in-vitro fertilization and now it's accepted by just about everyone except for the most radical extremists. (his reply was "...but that's different")

Needless to say, some of the reprecussions of unregulated cloning could be pretty nasty. People winding up making their kids clones of celebrities, their own relatives, etc.

There need to be safeguards, not because of "clones are teh devil!" but to maintain diversity as a species and not have generations of 'fad genomes' and such.

Personally, I also see the birth of another minority group that will be descriminated against :(

I say ban human cloning, but allow body parts for transplants.

This is the ONE thing that has always been present. The great equalizier. From the richest to the poorest, king or peasant, people age and die, of diesese or injury or whatever. Its part of the human identity. Death is a the greater boundry, beyond which there is no escape, no matter who you are. Take that away, and we're no longer human. We might be better, but we're not human.

I am completely and utterly against human cloning. And just to pre-empt your arguement, yes, it is irrational and based on nothing more than emotions and subjective conceptions of what is right and wrong, I ackowledge that, but I stand against it nevertheless.

It seems to me these scientists are rushing forward without considering social or ethical implications of their work. It is that which scares me, it's one thing to 'drag people kicking and screaming' into the future, it's another thing entirely to conduct experiments such as these without any interest in the results anywhere but inside the Laboratory.

Edit : They could also land themselves deeply in the doodah, can you imagine what would happen if this kid started getting flashbacks of his 'other' life or something freaky like that? Rather than helping to bring forward a wave of enlightened thinking, it would probably start a religious surge of huge proportions, thus completely defeating their point. :(

"From the richest to the poorest ... Death is a the greater boundry, beyond which there is no escape...Take that away, and we're no longer human."
ok first, what does this have to do with _cloneing_ ? and if I could live forever I wouldn't care if I was 'human'

"can you imagine what would happen if this kid started getting flashbacks of his 'other' life"
CLONEING!?!?

you know I want easy and cheap access to cloneing technology, it would insure a quick and decisive purge of the mass accumulated stupid we've picked up over the last 100 years or so, 50 years of a Michael Jackson hord and all he idots who made them would die without passing there own genes on (or fewer coppies) early exposure to the tech would mean it would be underdeveloped and most of the clones would probly end up incapable of reproduction so you wouldn't have to worry too much about them.

Errrr... calm down Bob, I was joking, if you'd read my other posts as well you'd notice my main concern is people getting sentimental about things that are long gone and trying to reproduce them. I'm not saying the kid would get flashbacks, my own thoughts are that he wouldn't, but has anyone actually stopped and wondered what they would do if he did?

we'd all convert to judaism becase it would be a sign from yawh that the end times are upon us.
it's imposable for that sort of thing to happen, if he _thought_ he was haveing flashback there'd be a lot of buz amungst the stupider people, while a constant drone of "it's just false memories you STUPID PEOPLE!" would be heard from eveyone who has any idea how DNA or the brain works.

clones that somehow have magical memories from there 'parent' are one of my pet peeves, like pharmaceutical comercals that don't tell you what the drug is suposed to do.

clones cannot have flashbacks or memories of the person that they are cloned from because memories are not carried in DNA. if that were true, then everyone would have half their mother's memories and half their father's memories.

Neither is personality*..... IMO it's our experiences, n ot our DNA, that define the kind of person we are - the 'soul', if you will.

So cloning strikes me as stupid & futile, because you're simply creating a physical copy who is a completely different person.

*well, the vast majority of it, at least.

Okay let's clear up some misconceptions.

1. Panos Zavos the scientist behind this is a twat. Just about every single other scientist involved in cloning research thinks that.

2. Cloning is deep in its infancy at the moment. Trying to clone a human is going to result in hundreds of miscarriages before you get anyone at all

3. Any baby that is born as the result of cloning will probably be horribly disabled. The result is that Panos Zavos gets sued for millions and that's the end of him.
