See attached. On Medium, just now. :)
Oh, and the Thebes survived, too. :D
-
I didn't know the rear beam cannon was a bonus objective.
-
'Tis. Look in FRED. It was actually easy once I realized I could order my wingmen to do it. :)
-
I tried doing that but then I kept getting destroyed, at least on hard and insane. The one advantage of having them do nothing but follow you is that they can take enemy fire for you. :D
-
yeah, nice photoshopping Goober...
;)
-
lol, i thought it was impossible to do that, until a year ago, when i finally killed all of the forward turrets and flak cannons.
-
Closest I've ever come was taking out all 4 forward beam cannons and getting the forward flak down to 10 or 12%. Then it jumped and I got nailed. :p
-
I'm still bitter about the Sathanas jumping out at the exact moment my Helios hit beam turret #4 in that mission... blew it up and everything, but it wsn't recorded in the post-brief.
-
Is it possible to disable the Sathanas in that mission? Or maybe Volition made that subsystem like a 10000000 hit points strong...
:wtf:
::runs to play that mission again: ::

WTF? You've said yourself that you still havent finished the cmapaign and you are playing it for the first time. So what is this? This is the second time I've seen something from you like this, and theres probably more.
To disable the sath, you'd have to take out all 5 engines, and then it will still jump if forced to...
I did this once on easy not too long ago. I think the Thebes survived, but i'm not positive... The beleth part is always easy, just disable it, and take out the turrets attacking the thebes, and then find the rest of the turrets... I think though, when i did it, i barely got the bonus objective, as the sath started jumping right before the trebs hit, but it did go down, barely...

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: What are you talking about? I've finished this campaign who knows how many times... Unless you're thinking of something else I said...
-
No, my mistake (actually karajorma's mistake)... Karajorma linked to a thread where he said both you and someone else proclaimed you were still going through the campaign for the first time... I took that according to his post, that you hadn't finished it, and taken that you had said a year ago, and gpt turned around...
-
Yeah. My bad. He said I had. Not I have and I mis-read it :D

You mean 6 engines. The sath has an engine on each boom, as well as the main ventral engine and a small engine at the top rear.
-
Even if you could carry 20 helios at a time and can reload them in 10 seconds, you'd still not be able to kill the engines. Those engines are crazy tough.
-
whoops... forgot the top ones... Yeah, it takes a good long time to take out one engine, let alone 6 of 'em...
-
Haha, congrats to you Goober. Medium's not too bad... keep on working, you'll get there eventually. ;)
-
I've beaten FS1 on hard (not perfectly, but like, the bare minimums :p )... Gotten about half way through on insane... I've beaten it 'perfectly' on Easy...
-
Thanks, Setekh. :) I've beaten most of the FS2 campaign on Hard (except for Proving Grounds, which I despise) but I don't remember how I did in Bearbaiting. I'll have to try it again.
Trouble is, if I start playing on Hard for more than a few missions, I get so jazzed up I can't fall asleep when I turn off my computer. ;)
-
There's a way to disable the Sath, tho. While in-game, let your wingmates do the dirty work and go on-line to www.freespace2.com Here, they will give you many weapons for download by pressing ~+0, ~+Shift+O, and ~+9. Select the Shivan Super Laser, BFRed, or BFGreen, and disable the engines!
-
...see, we want to do this without cheating...
-
Right... or table hacks. Anyway does this affect the campaign at all? Would be cool if it did...
-
um... give the Vasudans more headz in exchange for lotsa warships, then ask them all to disable the Sath!
-
....Nothing in FS is impossible except Saving things that the lucifer is shooting at.
Everything else has varying differences in improbability -- effected by skill.
I should know, the amount of bugs I've found in the game by doing things [v] thought would never be done.
BD too I expect.
-
Like saving the Nebtuu in Exodus? :)
-
uhhhh..... Is that the ship that gets beamed right at the beginning - exodus being a convoy mission? (Forgive me - I haven't played SP in a while and don't remember mission names as I was almost always an MP Pilot... campaigns are almost wasted on me, though I am looking forward to BWO and enjoyed one or two others...)
If so, yes, that's possible, even on insane.
And I don't remember if it bugs the mission or not o.O
-
Yeah, "Exodus" is the mission near the end of the campaign when you have to defend two Argos, a Triton, and a Hippocrates from Shivan bombers. The Nebtuu fries a Moloch corvette at the start of the mission, but its hull integrity is usually below 10% at this time, and a wing of Shivan bombers warp in practially right next to it. I didn't see any possible way to save it, even on Easy. How did you pull it off?
-
By being very good :)
If I remember correctly [V] never expected the Nebtuu to survive so when it gets to the jump node it just sits there. Pity that as it wouldn't have cost them much to make it jump out.
While we're on the topic I'd just like to curse QD and his ilk out for making my FREDding twice as hard as it would be otherwise :p

Great big :bump:
I just realized today why none of the video capture programs I downloaded ever worked for me before. It turns out that I had tested all the programs on my lab computer while it was running Daemon Tools. Must have been interfering somehow. Once I disabled it, video capturing started working beautifully. :)
On the suggestion of Galemp, I tried out Game Cam (www.planetgamecam.com, and no I am not a paid advertiser), and I loved it. It ran as if there was nothing in the background, and I was able to get 24 FPS very reliably. With FRAPS, I was lucky if I could break 5.
What does this have to do with this thread, you ask? Well, as soon as I got the video capture working, the first thing I thought of was a mission walkthrough, and the next thing I thought of was this thread. So for all the doubters out there, here is a movie of me completing all the goals in Bearbaiting. :D
[see below]
It's about 16 MB and requires XVid. Even so, I had to shrink it to 320x240 and remove the sound in order to get it down to a manageable size. If anyone's interested, I have a full-size version with sound, but it's over 300 MB. :drevil:

Yes please  , I can't see **** on this small resolution. With sound it would even be better. 10 minutes in 640x480 with sound should be possible with a filesize <100 MB, no ?
And thank god this was a :bump:, I feared QD had returned :shaking:
-
Okay, after fiddling with the codecs a bit I present these two files:
Small version (http://staff.hard-light.net/goober5000/downloads/bearbaiting-small.avi) - 320x240, 16 MB, no sound, requires XVid.
Large version 1 (http://staff.hard-light.net/goober5000/downloads/bearbaiting-large-unsynch.avi) - 640x480, 69 MB, with unsynchronized sound, requires DivX. Same run as the above.
Large version 2 (http://staff.hard-light.net/goober5000/downloads/bearbaiting-large.avi) - 640x480, 84 MB, with sound, requires DivX. Different run from the previous two.
For some reason XVid gave me a smaller size on the first file and DivX gave me a smaller size on the second file. Go figure.
These are actually two different instances of me flying the mission. :nervous: The first version is in the first two links, but unfortunately the sound got out of synchronization so I had to refly the mission. As a consequence I was tired and a bit annoyed, so it's a bit clumsier: I didn't get all four beams with the first shot (I got one down to 13% and had to finish it off with Trebs) and I lost more wingmen.
EDIT: moved files to HLP
EDIT2: fixed links
-
Thanks muchly. The Demon hitting a Helios with a slash beam right in your face was a classic moment
-
Nice shots there... ;)
*is tempted to film missions on hard and such*
*needs to make fraps detect sound card*
-
Wow... That will be of help *is ashamed of not managing to do that even on easy*
-

Indeed. :) An even funnier moment is in the first one when I stopped to rearm right in the path of the departing Sathanas. :o Fortunately I only got nudged rather than flattened.
Yes, my perfectionist nature got the better of me and I uploaded the unsynchronized version. :) It's smaller than the second large version, so I recommend watching it if you have the bandwidth to spare. I was pretty pleased with some of my flying on that go-round. :)
-
Your insertion of the unsynched one between the two links confused me...
:sigh:
Fraps never did like my sound card... What did you use?
-

How so? Read the thread for my explanation.Fraps never did like my sound card... What did you use?
Fraps is craps. Use Game Cam.
The problem is that Game Cam requires registration to enable sound. But it's only $10, so it seems like a good deal to me. And if you don't want to shell out $10, just use it to capture video, then dub in your own sound.
-
Or do the same thing i did for fraps... :nervous:
Uh... :p
I might end up dubbing it in, and having to record with an 1/8th to 1/8th balanced line running between my headphones and microphone port... I'm having trouble getting even specified programs for the task to get sound off the card...
-
Use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and record from Wave Mix, Stereo Mix, or What U Hear.
Dubbing is kind of unpredictable though. That's precisely why the second video has unsynchronized sound. :(

EDIT: Ok, the cable idea works fine (Gamecam would crash when i tried to create a profile)... So i'll just slap them together in VD...
-
:wtf: Whoops... Meant to edit...
I think its just my card... Its reasonably high end too, it just won't do that...
*off to film*
-
omg, if only i wasnt an exchange student who cant even spare any money...i would film these...yes i know u need sound, but hey its so not the same when you cant see all the crazy things i tell my wingmen to do...
i could show you me kicking ass in any mission on insane...who wants to see that aye?
-
The most I've ever gotten without cheating was 3 of the 4 front beams.
-
I usually just leave it alone once I get two, to be honest. Then I sit well back and re-arm for the Demon. Gives me something to do in the next mission.....
-
Wow, this thread is old. I can't remember ever making that post near the beginning. :D
I can get all four beams and the two flak cannons on insane, but I need the wingmen to follow me and take enemy fire, so I end up missing the lred in the back. Might be able to do it on medium though.
