Search for the OTT shockwaves if you're after what I think you're after.

And before anyone get's it wrong... Darkage made the effects. Nico keeps getting the credit, but they aren't his.

If not, try the OTT shockwaves. I think the link to them can be found in Nicos sig.

IIRC there were 3D shockwaves in the works too - though I must agree that pre-rendered flat shockwaves can look a lot better, but being able to map said pre-rend. stuff onto 3D stuff may result in even better effects.

You can already use 3d shockwaves. IMHO they are not bad, but much worse than the 2d shockwaves.

With the right texture it could look quite nice... I think I'll give it a shot one day. I have a concept how to do it, but it's much work.

There are a collection of 3d shockwaves here (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=54681&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) , most of them are just high enough polywise to get by.  Any more however and they'd just be a resource drain.  They could look really cool if someone made a nifty animated texture for them.

Here, try this one... it's mine. Just an experiment, really.

Can I animate it using an ANI as glowmap for the model?

I don't think glow maps work like they do on regular models, but granted my experimentation hasn't been great, but I do know that shine mapping makes it white.
