I was part of the beta, and am downloading the demo as I type this.
I wouldn't say you could compare it to Rome though... :)
But it is a pretty kewl game in its own right. I'm hoping the cinematics are kick ass... :D

It's fun but I'm not sure how much more the full game will bring that the demo hasn't already.
-
More units, more armies, and a full singleplayer campaign? :p
-
should keep the armchair generals happy for a while though, seems like fun, really, and it's different from the other tactics, as you have to hold your resource points, aside from hoarding them..
seems like a hoot.
-
Tested demo and it's look good I mighty buy it

The full campaign, the ability to build ALL Space Marine units (Terminators and Land Raiders were absent), more multi maps, and the ability to play as the Eldar, Chaos and Orks.
-
Ah - yes - that'd be a conflict of information. I've played the beta (and therefore HAVE built Terminators, Land Raidors - and played with the Eldar, Chaos and Orks).
-
Any suggestions where I can go to hook up DAP? Every single file server site I know of has stopped supporting them by using cgi scripts, instead of direct links. My dialup is twitchy and I need to be able to resume my downloads after the inevitable disconnect.
-
some 1 tried Hard FFA on the 4 player map?
its insane, if you get lucky instead of 2 army attacking you constatly only 1 will. because the other fighting with the 1 next to him. whoever wins in thier battle will win in the game, i almost destroyed 1 army when other army attacked me from both flanks, after a 10 minute of fighting he used his commander to lunch bombs or something like it... tottaly raped my army.
its insane i tell you insane, beside he never reinforce his army he keeps building and sending.
Tip: press the RMB(right mouse button) on the reinforce button.
it will auto reinforce your squad.

did you saw the Intro? god thats some great movie.
short but gr8. still blizzard movies are better but this one is good aswell..
i have noticed the game trying to copy some of the warc3 elemnets, such as the begining screen where the marine stand like the footman did at wc3. or the graphics point of view wich reminds me of warc3.

You said Demo in your first post, not Beta :p
The biggest thing I noticed between the two, was the demo ran a hell of a lot faster than the beta.
-
I am now officially honked off!:hopping: :hopping:
I spent 11 hours DLing with DAP after convincing FP that I wasn't using IE and needed to use it's convential queue system and what does my POS ISP do, it decides to crap out in the middle of it all. I get it back on and the FP starts prompting for a password, what password? Somehow it's managed to reconnect, but it still has 10 hours to go.
I cannot express my utter contempt for Dial-Up ISPs. They are a necessary evil in a world without widespead, affordable broadband access. But make no mistake, 9/10 of them are utterly worthless.
-
lol - deep breaths Liberator ;) I'm sure the demo will come out with a PC magazine sometime soon, so grab it off the demo cd's some of them have. :D
Fear - Yes, I've seen it now, and I must say that I am immensly satisfied with the cinematics :D
It would be nice to think that there was one after every mission, but I think I'd sooner find a pot of gold... :p
The skirmish mode is pretty damn fun yeah, I enjoyed the campaign mission as well, though I kinda think that they drew out the in-game movie clips a bit... :|
I'd agree with that too Thorn, runs heaps better than the beta... But I dare say that there may be some cause to that seeing as there is only space marines available at the moment...?
But yeah, it is still definitly a game worth playing through once it comes out. I hope its successfull enough for Relic and THQ to create an expansion pack and / or sequel or two...
BTW, does anyone else think Homeworld should have had a system like the squads in DoW do? IE the reinforce, and upgrade certain dudes to heavy weapons.
I put some idea's down myself, but I reckon with HW2's graphics and a fleet building system instead, it would of been a bit more fun...

Aye, I did forget that there was a difference when I wrote that ;)

Homeworld 2 did have a squad system like DoW for strike craft. However you didn't have the option to select different loadouts for each ship in a squad. I think that it would have been an interesting idea to pick gunship turrets, for example, in a style like you can pick the marine guns in DoW.
-
Yeah, I've got Homeworld 2.
I was thinking in a larger scale though. What if you built fleets like that rather than fighter squads. So you build fleets and upgrade them to have more destroyers, or carriers to launch bombers at them etc.
That way you could truly have epic battles. Maybe they'll try something like that in the 40k universe again. I daresay they'll milk the 40k license a bit more in the next few years... :)

a battlefleet gothic RTS, eh?
-
Why not?
I havn't played Battlefleet Gothic, but a computer game would certainly breath some life into things.
Plus if Games workshop has anything to do with it, they'll want the games to drive fans towards the table top as well...
So if it's successfull, I wouldn't be the least surprised to see games covering all of the tabletop games.
Maybe even some Warhammer ones?

I smegging well wish!!
If there was a BFG game in development, you can bet everything you have that I'd be banging on the door to do beta testing!
-
lol Killfrenzy.
I take it your a fan of BFG?
I hope for one that the space rts genre picks up a bit. Its almost dying out at the moment. All it needs is a little innovation...
I believe Relic could provide a pretty good quality space rts if they put their minds to it... And with the 40k universe already written for them it would be a bit harder for them to screw up the story :p *cough Homeworld2 cough*.
Still, we can only hope... or better yet, keep suggesting it on their forums! :D

No, this was an AI CPU useage issue. Playing against comps, and it would run like a freakin slideshow, didnt matter how many (or few) squads/units were on the map, it ran like crap, yet against humans it ran fine.
-
i run everything on max though shadow are off ,runs smooth .
though they have saied that they didnt include the option for model in the demo and the default in the demo is "only" medium(you cant change that).
we will have to wait for the retail to see this game in perfection.

did you have to send any game data back to them as part of the beta? It's possible (if so) that they used the beta to develop fast 'gameplan' presets for the AI, i.e. pseudo-standard responses to common player tactics.
They use something similar for chess playing AI, i.e. Deep Blue had a large master list of tactics and counter-tactics which was used as an adjunct to the more abstract AI parts.

Too bad there's no one else in this area that plays BFG :(
-
Wow. The game looks absolutely awesome!! And the cinematic, OMG!!! Thats just simply beautiful! A shame there wont bere any more in the game, it'll just be the one, however it does make sense. Blur Studios usually only makes the one offs for their clients who are Game developers. Like Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Bloodrein. IMHO those dudes rock in CGI. And I'm really happy with their work on the cinematic in DOW.
Kinda puts my little trailer to shame it does. Now... If only I could get those guys to work for me... :D
-
The opening cinematic was almost worth the 22 hour download all by itself. Gameplay is very warcraftish, I just wish I could zoom out farther.
-
i like the feel.. and the unit voices are spot on with the theme, particularly the marines
-
lol Dark_4ce.
Keep up your work and maybe you'll end up working for them.
I do hope though that they at least have a movie intro for the story and an ending...
Liberator- Yeah, The zoom out limit kinda felt a bit restraining to me too.
Oh and during the beta, there were no manual submissions of data, though it could of been done while online during play I guess...
Though I would hope that it was just them making the AI more efficient...
As long as it works I guess. :D

guys some 1 at the Warhammer community have modded the game so you will be able to play as orc and all the locked units.
follow those steps:
download the extractor and follow the readme stats...(to get VB just search google):
http://www.b5mods.com/tools/general/SpookyRATv200.rar
now do those step to unlock orcs\units:
add all the W40kData.sga by clicking the button the second from the right(the one with the many drivers.. its will extract all files into the folder "data" where the .sga was). afterward change the name from w40kdata.sga to any name (a must do!) like "abcd.backup" and start editing the the file with the notepad... follow this steps :
In the directory Data\attrib\racebps edit the file ork_race.lua (Windows editor will do fine) and change the line
GameData["race_details"]["playable"] = false
to true. You can do this to the other races to but there are no models for Eldar or Chaos and if you try to play the imps the game will crash instantly.
The Terminators:
In directory Data\attrib\spbs\races\space_marines open the file space_marine_squad_terminator.lua and delete the following lines:
GameData["squad_requirement_ext"]["requirement_table"]["required_2"] = Reference("required_ownership")
GameData["squad_requirement_ext"]["requirement_table"]["required_2"]["own_name"] = "relic_struct"
GameData["squad_requirement_ext"]["requirement_table"]["required_2"]["owned_count"] = 1.000
save and you get the terminators.
Same for Landraiders and Squiggoth.
for more info check the fourm:

lol, sounds like a lot of effort just to test the Orcs.
I've had the pleasure of playing with all three races in the beta though, so not sure if I really want to goto all the fuss... :p
The game is due out soon anyway, why can't people just wait?
Silly buggers.

took me all of five minutes.. but it was fun!
WAAAARGH! :p
-
took me less than 3 minutes. beside if you got the beta you can active all the races in the same way, and extract the anamition and models from the beta to the demo. same goes for the maps...and maybe people will figure out a way to extract the multiplayer options from the beta to the demo.
this game is near completsion before its even released...:D
-
lol.
I can wait for the Full version thanks.

I prefer the Chaos :p
The Bloodthirster has to be the coolest unit in the game..
-
The Eldar Avatar is not to shabby either.
Plus its probably the only non-gay sounding thing in their army. :p
But I'll never get tired of the Chaos dudes talking crazy stuff.
"Chaos is Strong!"
Mind you the Space Marine Commander has a good line or two as well...
"Walk softly, and carry a big gun"
hehehe.
-
everybody preffer the chaos marine because they look soo coooollllll
-
Just finished playing the demo. It reminded me why I used to like RTSes so much.
-
Well, I've just added the Orcs to my demo.
Needless to say:
Orc power!
WAAARGH!

i hate orcs, they are to vunrable to SM heavy machine gun(bolters?). besides what amazed me is that the computer playing as the orc have a good AI i mean wtf? why did the developers included the AI for skrmishes in the demo?... so strange god dam it.
beside Rome:TW in the 21th and Warhammer in the 22th. trully great week for the rts fans.
-
The orcs are meant to be used en masse. You have so many Shootas and other infantry that the enemy just cant keep up with them all. They get swarmed. Sure, you take losses, but thats how the orcs work. Besides, once you get some Nob squads it isnt as much of an issue. They're pretty tough, and they rape infantry.

yup,, they're not referred as "orkish hoardes" for nothing, they fight best when there's a lot of them..
-
this is why i hate them. i like micromanagment like in warc3 . SM remind me alot of it with thier hereos and small number of squads.... this game rocks
p.s call of duty:UO out today.
-
if anyone still care ... the game is out.. i wonder how long it will take to reach israel.
i read some reviews say there are major flaws in this game
1. voice acting(wich by the demo is great)
2. music(there is a music track in the game?!)
3. the singleplayer is 11 levels long with 1 race available(Space marine only ).
i buy rts for thier single player, because i always get sick from rts multiplayer... im seriously considering to pass this game and buy total rome insteed.... though they sayed that if the game will be a big hit it will have a sequel....
some 1 in u.s already bought it?(uk release in at the 24th to this month)
-
The voice acting is a little cheesy, but we're talking about a setting with green space Orcs :) The voice overs are definately cheesy and dramatic on purpose.
The music in the game seems fine for background music, most complaints I've heard here is that people want a heavy metal rock sound track for the game.
I'm probably half way through the campaign right now. It's fun and competently put together, it would have been great if there were campaigns for each species but so far they've done a good job with the one campaign they made. It's about the same length as Homeworld 2.
-
lol Thorn, indeed. :)
Hey Ace, would you say its fun enough to buy?

Hey Ace, would you say its fun enough to buy?
its a simple Rts combined with simlpe tactics that any retarded can learn. very arcradish. the multiplayer alone worth buying, and if the sells goes well they will do expansions so... yes.. its worth/desrve the money and your time.
i just decided im going to buy this and rome total war ... will cost me alot but i dont care.
and the reviewers didnt complain on the orcs voice they complained on the CSM voice wich i think is sweet....
soon i will have this game... i think after "yom kipor"...
i eagrly waiting.
-
I loved the demo. One of the first truly fun and semi-innovative RTSs in a long time.
-
acctually i still play the demo from time to time, the skrmish is great. multiplayer on this going to rock.
