Title: OpenGL v 2.0 is out!!!! Catching up to DirectX???
Post by: Omniscaper on September 12, 2004, 02:12:27 pm
I found this interesting article in

http://www.opengl.org/documentation/opengl_current_version.html

Progammable shaders and lots of techno babble that makes no sense to me, an end-user. Will you SCP folks get on top of its new features? Or is this release only opens the doors to graphics hardware makers to incorporate its functions. I dunno if that release will benefit graphics cards created before this.

What does this mean for you SCP dudes who still value OGL? I know this could mean alot to the ATI folks whose shinies aren't working in DirectX mode.

I don't know if our cards support OGL 2.0...

It may be all future tech, like the 6800 and the x800...

My 9800 Pro supports OGL 2.0. UBERGLOAT!

I don't know if i'll ever use it, though. D3D works fine.

I haven't read the whole spec yet but most of it so far is just OGL 1.5 (or 1.4) with some of the extensions made official.  That would include late 5xxx series and all 6xxx series drivers for NVIDIA if I remember right.  Things could be made to look a bit better and run a bit faster if the programmable shaders and stuff were used but I don't know if there is much that can't already be done.  Basically it's official specs but doesn't seem to include a ton of actually new features.

New OGL features just needs someone to do it, or someone to work on FRED so I can work on them some.  I've already gotten specmaps in OGL working but it doesn't look quite as good as DX (it's kind of dulled) and no one has offered help for that yet.  Envmapping just needs someone to do it and shadows are easier to do in OGL than in DX since OGL takes care of most of the work itself.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to scream and yell at FRED2 again before the next hurricane gets here. :nervous:

You tell him!!  Frances knocked me off my computers for almost 3 days while I pieced together parts to get 1 out of 4 working for the Internet.  And since I fix computers for a living my clients were after me a lot too.  Don't know what to make of Ivan yet but I'm not taking chances this time.

Oh and FRED related I'm going to release a build with working briefing icons soon.  There are still a lot of position problems but it works a lot better in non-HTL mode.  Hopefully that will tide a few people over until I get something better ready for release.
