Title: Warpstorm temporarily down
Post by: HeX on September 14, 2004, 09:01:47 pm
Just a heads up for any Warpstormers here (I know there are a few) that Warpstorm will be down for a bit.

Chesch posted a bulletin but not everyone saw it. We had unexpectedly reached 90% of our bandwidth load. Proably a combination of software updates and increased traffic.

Well we hit the limit a few days ago. We're still debating over paying for more bandwidth or waiting it out.

The board isn't broken at all. The software works fine, it's the traffic that's a problem. We're working on some solutions to that as well.

If anything changes I'll post it here.

How much is WS's bandwidth anyways?

Only 0.99 cents per gig a month after the first 5 free gigs. We're working on a system to compensate.

That's ****ing garbage.

I get mine at $20/month for 60Gb.

This is to let most Warpstormers know:

Due to the increase in traffic and bandwidth useage, a new policy is likely to be instated.

To reduce traffic load, we will be most likely removing image uploads without a donation.

Not a large donation. Something like $1 for so many months of upload time. Cheap but effective. If people don't want to donate, they'll just have to find a free server like photobucket. an0n, I think you have such a service don't you?

Regardless, whether people pay or use off-site uploading it'll help. I'll also probably enstate cracking down on smiley and image spam.

This isn't for sure but it's an idea.

Yes but we're getting it for 3 years of total free service with 1and1. By the time it's over, we'll be on a new server.

If you're running at like (*does quick calculation*) 10Gb/month, I can host WS, no problems.

Thanks an0n, I'll keep that in mind. We'll see what it looks like with the new system and make some determinations from there.

If anyone's wondering, I hope to get Warpstorm up and running again before next week.

Icy has been apparently working on the bandwidth problem so we think we can get it fixed up. Attachments may end up just being reduced in size limtations.

Oh and Bobboau, remind me when WS goes back up to give you a new pass.

And of course, you'd never replace an image with, say, gay porn without telling anyone.........:doubt:

Firstly, I only ever did that once, to Rictor. And it was already porn, I just made it slightly more appropriate porn.

Secondly, I told plenty of people. Infact I was giving a blow-by-blow description as I was doing it, over IRC.

I was just providing hosting. What he does with his pictures is none of my concern.

If I'd thought for a second I wasn't immediately going to be blamed, I'd've left the damn thing as a the porn version. But no, I'm nice (and self-serving) so I editted the original, non-poem version of the wreath pic over the porn version and changed some text.

Which, when operating on a gradient background, is really ****ing hard to do, all for the sake of not upsetting Steak.

Go, check it out. I think it's under wreath2.jpg.

EDIT: wreath.jpg is my editted version, wreath2.jpg is the original he showed me (with the comment tagged later), and wreath3.jpg is the original with the porn.

Yeah, probably. But I'd've used the original file and fixed the goddamn capitalization while I was at it.

Sorry to Kode and anyone else for not getting back to you. As HeX said I have been extremely busy. MMB was the one who switched me on DnD so people didn't think I was there when in fact I wasn't (MMB has been using my computer alot as hers is at work atm). So if there was any miscommunication, I again apologize. :sigh:

Warpstorm should go back online this week or early next week automatically.  AFAIK we don't have any outstanding charges so in theory it should. From the bandwidth logs, the period seems to end on the 17th and start on the 18th. So expect WS to go back online sometime during the 18th.

When it goes back online I will make a post regarding the changes being put in place.

Well back to work I go. :ick:

Cya next year.  :doubt:

This seems to be the place that always ends up having an announcement on WS when it dies. :p

they seem quite good. looks quite cheap too. how good are they?

At the moment, they're being very cowboy about the way they allocate diskspace, but for the most part they kick ass.

For example: I get 8Gb total space, but they'll put 15 people with 8Gb accounts on an 80Gb server and just hope they don't all max out. The server harddrive is always at about 88% and uploads cut out when the drive hits 92%.

They say they're upgrading servers and had to cram people in while they've got servers down, so......we'll see.

Post by: kode on September 16, 2004, 11:09:22 am
oh, ok.

what kind of files do you have that makes 8gb anyway?
Title: Warpstorm temporarily down
Post by: an0n on September 16, 2004, 11:19:39 am
None.

But all the hosted **** takes up about 1.6Gb, IIRC.

I was looking at the 1and1 plans and we can always upgrade to 10 or so more gigs for cheaper then .99 cents a gig. It is only when a person goes over their allowed monthly bw, be it any of 1and1 plans, that they charge .99 cents a gig.

I don't think we will need to right now but in a few months we will.

Thanks for the warm welcome Setekh. :)

I prefer HostDime over 1&1.

They tend to go down for 5-10 minutes randomly and infrequently, but any changes you make through the Cpanel are instantaneously made.

Whereas with 1&1 you have to wait upto 3 hours before e-mails and FTP accounts come online.
