Title: logging StarCraft chats
Post by: kasperl on September 15, 2004, 07:35:23 am
OK,my little brother is playing Starcraft online, but since he is only 9, but somehow manages to typ 3 words of English, my parents want to monitor the chats. Now, aside from hanging over his shoulder all the time, which is annoying for all concerned, I'd like to stuff it all in a text file, and let that be read by my parents. Any chances of doing that?

I dont think thats possible with B.net. You may want to email Blizzard though.

Why on the hell is your 9-year old brother playing Starcraft anyways?

Just give him Max Payne already.

Hell, it's the only game that works on his P266.

'sides, I don't intend to let him loose on FSOPXO.

Seriously, I'll search the blizzard site some more, but tips are greatly welcomed.

Grab a keylogger, you know, those nifty little programs that logs all of the key pressed. Sure, you'll have gibberish due to use of shorcuts in SC, but, I think that's the only solution in your case.

It's more of the stuff others write, that concerns me.

so let him play with me and my neighbour...

no, wait, on second thought... don't. unless you wanna teach him swedish curses.

That wouldn't be too grand an idea, no.

If I think of the chance that the WS crowd is playing SC with him, I just shudder.

Seriously, I'd really like a way to monitor his chats, and more importantly, the recieved messages. Call me net paranoid, but I know by now what kind of complete dirtbags play online games. And I'm not talking about pedofiles or something either, just your average 13 year old idiot screaming Puffy Didlidy lyrics down the voice comm. Not the kind of envirment fit for a nine year old, is it?

So you're all happy for him to play a game based around the concept of galaxy-wide xenocide, but you're worried that someone might say 'fuck'?

Post by: kasperl on September 15, 2004, 01:44:59 pm
Err, yeah.

Even TV contains the xenocide, the murders, and whatever. And call me a hypocrite, but Starcraft isn't that gory. Sure, Zergs are ugly and marines go splat, but there's much worse on TV.

aw c'mon, leave the kid alone. I can understand how your parents might want to monitor him, but not why you would not to help them (especially in this case, where even if its possible, its alot of work). I don't mean to preach, really I don't, but I'm not a big fan of "protecting" kids from whatever life has to throw at them. And anyway, its Starcraft, the worst that could happen is he could start talking like a Korean nerd (kekekeke). Its not like he's in a NAMBLA chatroom or anything.

...and to answer you question, I have no idea how you would go about doing it :D :D

I'm gonna revert to my elitism, computer-geek, database of phrases and say: THE INTERNET WASN'T MADE TO SERVICE THE ENTERTAINMENT NEEDS OF CHILDREN!

A nine year old shouldn't be playing video games, let alone wandering off into the recesses of the internet.

Hows about you get your parents to actually do some ****ing parenting instead of sitting him infront of a computer and *****ing that a technological marvel designed to defend the world against nuclear annihilation doesn't cater to the anti-profane needs of their faggoty little kid.

The problem is not that I'm totally scared of him learning bad words (if I was, I wouldn't talk to him), but just the fact that we have no idea of what he's doing. As for giving him a break, well, let's just say I don't trust the world at large.

And an0n, really, what is more invasive, wathcing over is shoulder, all the time he sits behind a PC (only wednesdays and saturdays, in case you were wondering), or logging the damn chats and reading the logs once in a while?

If. He. Is. Not. Mature. Enough. To. Go. On. B-Net. Unsupervised. He. Is. Not. Mature. Enough. To. Go. On. The. Internet.

And what the **** is a 9 year old going to talk about? It's not like he's going to sit there discussing the metaphysical ramifications of the martial bond in the context of a family environment with some French kid while his Zerg hordes storm a Marine stronghold.

He's going to talk about Power Rangers and call people fags.

Don't use a key logger.

Starcraft will keep the text in a buffer file somewhere. Just make something in C++ that'll copy that file every 5 minutes while SC is running.

Lol you obviously don't know some 9 year old's I've seen.  Sorry bit random.  Best to ignore, still good luck to him, I was rubbish at SC.

Is this geusstemating on your side, or have you dicked around with SC stuff before?

It's a guess.

But it's got to keep the data somewhere. Hopefully it'll keep it in a format vaguely resembling standard text.

yeah well, in that case you should get his ICQ number. Cause I hear the new season, Power Rangers Super Ninja Time Force is the best one yet.

and I was playing Indiana Jones and Fate of Atlantis when I was 9 years old, so don't tell me kids aren't "mature" enough. I evaded Nazis, piloted a hot ait baloon through the desert, consorted with ancient spirits, found Atlatnis and navigated it deadly catacombs, so don't tell me kids are too young or immature.

There's a slight difference between Lucas Arts adventure games and Starcraft.

Namely, SC consists of building soldiers and killing the enemy. LA games consist of puzzle-solving and reasoning things out. If they weren't so much fun, they'd probably be classed as educational and distributed to schools.

that's bull**** about your parents wanting to know "what other people are typing to him".  you're just a nosy sob that wants to know what his brother says/knows/is told.  i know because three years ago i did the same thing to my little brother, and then i realized how petty i was being, and i quit.

also, to my knowledge, there's no program that can log what other people type... unless you somehow hack into the SC engine.  there's ways of setting up bots to follow your brother into various channels and log every word that's said within that channel (what your brother says, what people say to him, etc.) but that wouldn't work once he joins a game, because the bot wouldn't follow him into a game.

a keylogger would work, to tell you what he's saying, but the easiest way to find out what people say to him is to get one of those keyloggers that takes screenshots every number of seconds (like, every 10 seconds, for 2 minutes after the last key's pressed).  there's tons of those...   do some research on BOTS.

Tact is more of an optional in this case.

I say we burn Kasperl's house to the ground by strapping a large chunk of black-powder to his gas line.

That should stop his brother using SC to have cyber-sex with computer literate horses.

And the pixies! The horrible, terrible pixies! ARGH! They're biting my face! HELP! HELP!

Stealth: trust me, if I wasnted to spy on him I'd be keylogging that box and hacking his accounts and stuff. This is just basic concern.

As for taking screenies, I think we can do that once he get's a new comp, since this one is a P266, and the lag would be fecking huge.

As for the WS crowd, that was just an example, because, well, I've read some of the "outbursts".

And getting a swear filter on WS sounds bad. But passowrding the rift might be an idea.

I think I can safely say that we are not going to password the Rift.
Ever notice how most forums ask if you're over 13? Yeah, they do that for a reason. If your brother isn't 13, he isn't posting at WS.
