Now I am getting pretty hacked off with other people trying to say what is good for me....
My gf has a problem with her shoulder - similar to tennis elbow, a bad inflammation of the tendons, which is extremely painful when you move your arm. OK, the next part - the doctor advised a large dose of Ibuprufen (600mg) 3 times a day - a total of 1,800mg. So, she gets a bunch of 400mg tablets, and today I went to get some 200s. So I am in the supermarket, I get my coke (hah! that's another story) and 4 boxes of 16 capsules. I get to the checkout, and the assistant says "We can only sell 2 boxes" so I say "my girl needs 1,800mg of this a day" then, in seconds there is a supervisor ***** on my case also saying "only 2 boxes" I just shrug and say "fine, I'll come back later" then the ***** says: "we will refuse to serve you, and in fact I'm taking these now" at which she scoops up ALL the tablets and leaves. I was angry, no, more than angry, I was furious. I didn't lose it though, just calmly said "stuff your shop" and walked out leaving my coke on the belt.
Now, after I left, I bought 100 from the chemist after being refused 300, and 48 from another chemist, and 32 from the other supermarket. BUT, and this is the crux of this post:
What business is it of the friggin supermarket how many headache pills I buy?
:hopping:
Oh, and anyone else think the 'Nanny State' mentality has gone too far?
-
This is a bit OTT, but OTH, the US allows a lot more OTC meds then the EU. There are some headache meds that an't be sold over here, so each time my dad goes to the States he brings back a full bottle.
BTW, if it was on doctors recipe, there shouldn't have been an issue. Mind, if you had to go to the doctor for every headache it would be bad too, but still.
-
he mentioned it was a bad shoulder problem.
Just show them the doctor's prescription, it ought to work. Otherwise threaten to sue 'em for causing physical distress and harm to your gf :drevil:
-
Yeah, if there's a prescription they should not be able to refuse service. The reason for the restrictions are simply/obviously to try and stop people buying a large amount for suicide via OD.
I'd imagine the limit is set based upon this and that, if requiring a larger amount, you'd likely be in a position of having to see a doctor and get a prescription, anyways.... but it's debatable how effective this actually is in preventing suicides, because as you pointed out it's not exactly hard to go to multiple places and stock up.

Heh, with recipe; unlimited painkillers :p
Besides, I find it a good thing when painkillers are limited to people who don't have a recipe. Mainly because that **** is actually poison for your body. Anyway, why the hell would you want 300 pills if you don't have a recipe.
And Clave, since the doctor advised it, just ask for a recipe :)
-
I take it's that Dutch for Prescription.
-
We call it 'recept' which means 'recipe'. So, yeah :p
-
I take it you watched Grumpy Old Men last night, Clave.
-
Err, shoulda remembered it was prescreption in English.
Meh, I'm tired.
-
 Yeah...
Great program.
But as for the prescription/recipe, she did not get one, just a scribbled note....
Anyway, just some other thoughts from the program/life:
CCTV cameras - Do you mind being watched ALL the time?
Playgrounds - Practically don't exist in thier original form, everything is padded.
School sports - What is so damn wrong about kids being competitive?
School transport - Hello! you don't need a freaking great 4x4 to transport one small child across Chelsea.
OK - calm, calm, calm - I'm alright now...:D
-
CCTV: Well, I can't be bothered with thinking about it. Sure, cameras in the toilets/showers shouldn't be allowed, and the tape should be destroyed after some time, but they do more good then bad. And when someone wants surveillance on you, the camera's hardly matter.
Playgrounds: Don't get me started. Even football (soccer for the Yanks), goals have to be surrounded with either rubber tiles (ouch?!) or loose sand. And a large log, or some old car, or some sewage pipes (new, clean ones, off course) can be great piees of a playground, but sine they're not specificly designed, they're not allowed.
School Sports: /me doesn't get the problem here.
School Transport: Give em a friggin bike, and get some decent bicycle lanes. Goes for both the States and the UK. Anyhing under 10 miles/16km should be easily done twice a day. Heck, I do 10km to and from to school (20 total) each day, and feel like a wuss.
4x4's: SUV's should be made illegal on roads. Seriously, they're too dangerous compared to other personal cars. If you need to transport lot's of stuff, get a van..
-
SUV's should only be given liscenses for people who NEED them. i.e. businesses that have a lot of cargo that requires moving through undeveloped areas, in which case it could be reasonable.
Either that, or only allow SUV's on the road which give the same mileage as an ordinary car.

CCTV - I can understand their value, i.e. for high crime areas. But I think, for sake of civil liberties, their use should be reactive rather than anticipatory
Playgrounds - I think it's fair enough that everything is done to make playgrounds as safe as possible... I'm not sure you can complain if, for example, concrete is replaced by rubber crumb. Also, ash football pitches are a crime against humanity.
School sports - nothing against them, so long as they don't force people to watch, as it's sodding boring.
School transport - very debatable. Probably only necessary in areas where it is considered dangerous to walk home late at night, or in cases of great distance (i.e. like in the highlands). Better off to have organised school buses in all cases (already happens in cases where transport to school is required). Unfortunately, it's a bit of a catch 22, as so long as people are taking their kids to school in cars, the roads are busy, so it's more dangerous for kids to walk to school (cross roads), so the parents feel obliged to transport them....etc.
SUVs - ban them for anyone who does not do at least, say, 25 miles of off-road travel per week.
-
Ash football pitches?
I think my kowledge of English language is failing me again.....
And school transport in the UK might indeed not be the safest thing to attempt on bike, the roads aren't exactly made for bicyclists. But still, it's a lot better for general stamina. Twouldn't be bad if people took bread instead of a bag of crisps for lunch, mind.

Volcanic, red, ash. Basically like playing on little shards of glass (much, much worse than astroturf)... the stuff literally shreds skin into little pieces, I still have damage to my knees from playing on that stuff at primary school.
-
I think I have an idea of what stuff your talking about.
Who's brainfart was it that put the stuff on a football field?
-
Satan.
-
What red gra?
Like little red pebbles only sharp?
That stuff is for playing 'real' hockey on (As opposed to ice/roller hockey; Use different kinda sticks), you ain't meant to play foot ball or any other kinda sport on that!
Out of curiosity Clave, how did your GF damage her shoulder like that? It just seems your doc prescribed quite a high dose of pain killers... In my experience, if it's that serious you'd be better getting a physio or someone to take a look at it...?
-
We don't know, it started small and just got worse... The doctor said it may take months to get better, the three things he suggested were: Lots of Ibuprufen, Physiotherapy (long waiting list) or Cortazone injection into the joint. It is a rare occurence it seems, and the shoulder joint is complicated....
-
[q]you ain't meant to play foot ball or any other kinda sport on that![/q]
You do in Glasgow. ;)
-
Yeah, I used to play on the Red-Ash stuff :(
Well, the Supermarket has the right to refuse to serve you, however, a letter to their head office saying how your girlfriend is in pain, and with a Photocopy of the note the doctor scribbled, together with stressing how rude and useless the staff were well at least land them in trouble.
CCTV : For them in public places only.
Playgrounds : I do agree that our children are kept too 'sterile' these days, I concern as to how little natural disease/injury tolerance they are building up.
Sports : Never had a ploblem with competition as such, as long as the little bastards have it drummed in from the start that it is a game and whilst winning is good, losing is no reason to hate the winner, his school, hid race and anyone within 20feet of him.
School transport : I am certainly in agreement that something needs to be done about SUV's. London's roads were mainly designed to take cart and small vehicles, SUV's are increasing the Gridlock problem 300 fold.
-
you should bring the doctor's prescription to the pharmacy as proof, then see what happens.

This is exactly the BS I've come to expect from the Left.
The reason that SUV's are as popular as they are is because they are safer in an accident than almost any other vehicle on the road, save a Police Interceptor/Cruiser.
What should be banned are the Tiny Metal Death Traps that fold up like tin-foil in an accident, and the overall consumer cost of everything reduced.

FFS, think before you post.
Safer for the person in the car. Lethal to the person it hits, or the small car.
Seriously, a tank is safest of all in a collision, but you don't license that for the road, do you?
EDIT; "from the left"? What in the name of **** are you on about?

It would seem any idea that has had more than a second of thoughtful consideration is considered to be from the left from the more extreme Republicans. Just an observation mind.

They're evil, I tells you, evil.
What worse is that the football pitch at my old primary school was surrounded with grass! Grass, sweet soft, pleasant, non-cutting grass! The torture!

You're mischaracterizing aldo.
I don't know a single Conservative/Republican/ect who's for a dirty enviroment or a continuation of the violence indicative of humanity. The Left/Liberal/ect has used these things as a political tool for so long that people automatically assume that the other side is opposite. We differ on cause and solution only.
-
SUVs are safer? - I think not:

So you're now saying that the right also dislikes SUVs, because they are heavier polluters and thus damaging the environment when their use is unecessary in urban environments?
Or is your characterisation that the 'left' seeks some form of solution to said problems as policy when involved in political campaigning, whereas the right just ignores them?
EDIT; oh, and the political meaning of conservative is 'resistant to change' or 'opposing liberal reforms'. So...by your definition, a conservative recognises the problem, but doesn't want to change anything to fix it?

I'd forgot about that :) SUVs, and indeed proper 'UVs' like Range Rovers have tendency to roll... IIRC there was a Top Gear thing on it.

Ahh, britain. You're all insane.
-
Pardon?
-
I thought my comment was fairly clear.
-
It is, but I don't quite understand your reasons for it :D
-
Understanding is unneeded. Only obeisance.
-
How vorlon of you...

I was thinking Stalinist, actually.
-
Same thing...
To get back on topic, you buy drugs in the supermarket? :wtf:

SUVs, eh? I think Conan O'Brien put it best when he said it would be a lot cheaper and easier to buy a hat that says "I have a small penis."
-
On the Top Gear thing: You mean Jeremy driving a Hummer through an English village? I was literally rolling on the floor laughing at that. And the damn thing does 1MPG on normal running, and 0,3 when accelerating.
-
Where in the English countryside is there a road wide enough for a Hummer? :wtf:
-
Dunno, not anywhere near Cornwall/Scotland. (Unless you like to destroy ages hold hedges and woodwalls anyway.)
No-one said anything about getting the Hummer there in the first place, though they nearly took a wall out getting through the town.

Nah, but it might have been Channel 5's cunning clone of Top Gear (called.....5th Gear), so ne'ermind.
