I've been listening to FS1 music, and have decided that if there is one thing that FS1 excells at (other than cut-scenes), the it is the music. For example, the Mainhall music.
Best soundtrack ever.
-
surprising how much you miss in-game innit ?
-
FS1 music is far better, agreed.
-
Im gonna hafta go through and listen to it, cuz i always play through the game with no music
-
Indeed, it is superior...
-
*opens MediaPlayer and starts playing FS1 music. Nostalgy!*
I wish I could play FS1. :o
-
erm.... FSPort?
-
The Fs2 Leviticus track is actually my favorite...above any Fs1 track. But yeah, in general, Fs1 music is better.
Yet another reason to download the FS1 Port! ;)
-
There are very few FS2 tracks that are rememberable. I like the first mainhall track and the last two brifing tracks(04 and 05) most of the ingame music sounds like those new age trash, though.
So yeah FS1 music is worlds better(as almost every other aspect of FS1:p )
-
FS1 main hall. Fs2 Cinema... FS1's briefing music...
oh the goodies...
If only I had FS1 installed. (Don't tell me port. It's not nearly as good.)
-
Never managed to get the music to work with the port- need a new music.tbl I think, I have all the music files. Every link I've ever found (yes I used search) to a FSport music.tbl that will use the old music is a broken link. Anyone got a good one around,, I'd love to play it with the real music.
edit: the music from "field of battle" is my favorite...
-
only problem with FS1 + FS2 music is that it's soooo short---30 or 40 seconds long mostly.

I had trouble with that too.
Try this one. :)

My favorite is M3. Many fond memories with that one.
-
The mistake, imo, with FS2 was adding that Operatic Voice to things, I'm fine with the choir in the end sequence of FS2 (which is one of my favourite FS2 tracks), the problem is with that Opera voice is it sounds like it's been ripped out of a £12.99 samples pack :(
-
Fs1 music is the best!
-
I like FS1 music listen them
-
the Joshua track from FS2 rules
-
Numbers is my favorite :p
-
Yeah numbers is good. I actually prefer fs2 music. That's not to say I dislike the originals.
-
I have the whole fs2 sountrack stored in my ipod.
I'm such a dork. ;)
I'll do FS1's music at a later time.
-
FS1 music does rock. It just has so much more atmosphere. The briefings seem more urgent, everything just seems so much darker. Though Flipside, much of the FS1 battle music has the operatic voice in it too. It just isn't as obvious.
Oh, and don't neglect Silent Threat's track. That expansion is overall fairly worthless, yes, but the extra music is pretty cool.
-
Some of the Red Faction (1) music on the V webpage is actually quite good, too.
-
I think the best music from either game was FS2, Revelation. Flying through a kickass mission with a pulse-pounding, almost techno beat is truly awesome :D. That's not to say I don't like the rest of the music, though. I attempted to make a FS1 CD directly from the WAVs, but the quality was so crappy that I must have done something wrong; likewise with FS2 :p.
-
Still don't think anything beats Brief4 from FS2.
-
I dunno, I like FS1's music, but I wouldn't call it better. Just feels different. :)
-

That's because it has, but it's about $100, though, not £12.99. Royalty free, at that, aswell.
-
Someone should remix FS1-9, Monolith -- that was my favorite.
-
brief04 was badass. but all FS1 tracks were amazing, i must agree
-
Another great track was FS2_Cinema, which contained clips from some of the cutscenes. It gave a really dramatic, tense feeling to the briefings it was used in. I actually didn't know about the Silent Threat set of tracks until a few weeks ago, seeing as how they were never used in-mission; those things are awesome :).
-
FS2_Cinema is just used in the credits as far as I know. But it is quite good.
-
It was used in Slaying Ravana and at least one other mission.
-
I agree that a lot of the music rocks, but I think another important aspect of the music rocking is putting it together with the right mission. The slower, less discussed music is important for the hum-drum missions while in good campaigns, the climatic missions are really enhanced by the appropriate music.
Hate the Traitor for example, used the perfect music for the mission. But at the same time, that music is not very good for most missions, the ambiance/normal track specifically. The music helps to set the pace of any campaign.
My personal favourites from FS2 are numbers + leviticus, I also like the cinema track but it can only be used sparringly to have its full effect. I'm not sure why people ragg on the vocals, I love the vocals in FS2.
FS1 music seems to have more urgency, while FS2 seems to go for the 'this campaign is really epic and galactically important' slant.
EDIT - One problem with FS2 music was brought up by someone at an earlier time, the music has very little in the way of allied/enemy arrival cues. I believe that each FS1 track had its own (and multiple) enemy, allied arrivals + death tracks and perhaps even nrml tracks (whereas some FS2 music shares the same normal-track (normal/ambience as in the music played when there are no enemies around)).

In Exodus.
It is a sinister sounding track, I deem it shouldn't be in the Slaying Ravana mission as there is nothing special in that mission. I guess it will only be me.
-
Endgame from FS2 owns all.
-
So long as we're on the topic, is there anywhere to download the FS or FS2 briefing tracks? The only chunk of the soundtrack I've seen largely available anywhere are the FS2 ambient "in-mission" tracks, and the ending cutscene tracks.
-
If you have the VP Viewer (http://www.descent-network.com/cgi-bin/descman.cgi?module=vpview), you can simply extract the WAV files of all the music from the FS1/2 VP data files. This is perhaps the coolest tool for Freespace; it lets you extract any file used by FS1/2, including tables, textures, models, sounds, mission files, and animations :).
-
I convert FS1 and FS2 music to mp3 format (bitrate 256 kbps, only one file is 128 kbps).
Install Win MX p2p software (http://www.winmx.com), run it, and search "FreeSpace". (my username in WinMX is brethitman423).
My FS1 favorite - Haunted
My FS2 favorite - Joshua
-
FS1 title was a perfect introduction to the game and series. A great track.
-
Nothing beats btl A01
-
The mainhall music for FS1 was great, especially when coupled with the flightdeck on the Bastion.
EDIT: Just opened up the vp's on my FS1 CD's... Ah, the music brings back so many fond memories.
Makes me wonder how it would all sound with real instruments.

I like all th FS2 Briefing tracks. The Cinema track too (Brief7 I think)
-
There is little difference between the tracks called Brief7 and Cinema. At least as far as I am noticed.

There's no difference at all. The music.tbl points at the same tune in both cases :D
-
I'm glad I know how to play piano. I can teach myself.
I'm at my school's typing class! Free time!!! YAY :ha:
-
I actually prefer all of FS2's music, especially Joshua and Numbers. Although FS1's music is definitely great too. A lot of people seem to hate the vocals in FS2, but I think they're excellent.
-
I wish that there was a way to get the original files though in a higher quality format, it's a shame that it was so heavily compressed. Taking a listen to the VP based files, and the publicly posted songs from FS2, there's a big difference there. If the original soundtrack from FS1 was in that good of quality, and acquirable, I wouldnt mind submitting some work in further improving the FSPort with higher quality music. I would be beside myself with joy, as it's really the only game music that moves me personally.
I got a question though. What if I were to make a mod with some of the Red Faction 1 music? Would that be against copyright stuff? Probably, because THQ has rights to RF...
-
If you tried to make money with said music, then definitely, but I'm not so sure about just using it for a mod, since you don't profit from it.
-
It's still illegal. Doesn't mean you'd get in any trouble for it, but unless you're somehow promoting Red Faction it's probably a no-no.

The whole sound of FS2 came across as much more mature IMO.
Especially the weapon s/fx.
-
FS1 music is very good, but FS2 music is good, too
-
FS2 music gives it more of a space-opera, epic feel. FS1 gave it an action packed POW POW POW feel, which is what both games reflect anyway.
And I agree with a previously stated sentiment: FS2's weapons effects also sound way more "mature" than in FS1.
-
how do you extract the music from the table?
-
VPview available on Stealth's site as part of the FS kit... (http://3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth) ... then extract it from the vp that contains it...
-
i still can't get the music :(
-
You can't? What's wrong? All you have to do is open FreeSpace\Data\freepace.vp in VPView, click on music and then select one of the .wavs to hear the music. Select them all and choose extract to listen to them outside of VPView. What went wrong?
-
Wait nevermind i found all the music on that site and downloaded it
-
The FS2_DB_02 - very good track

Yeah great track. It makes me happier about not completely succeeding in a mission :D
-
Thanks, Karajorma. Got VPview, extracted music...very nice. Leviticus...I CAN PLAY IT WHENEVER!! HAAHAHAHAHAHA!!
-
You check out the beam cannon s/fx in the same way. They're pretty cool
-
That gives me an idea...
Oh, and while I was poking through the VP file, I found this.
And now, straight from Blitzerland's lair...

Oh, right-click save.
I love it when gaming companies leave little Easter Eggs...:D
Furthermore...

I cant unzip it. :(

I loved Chaser when I got the original Freespace demo many many years ago. At the time I thought it miraculous that a space sim could have such cool music, voiceovers and superb graphics (didn't even have a 3D card at the time!) and bought it as soon as it came out...
