The browser, which I am a proud user of, reached 1,000,000 downloads this tuesday, five days after release, and that mind ya, is the beta version.
Bye-bye monopoly.

 and deservedly so.
Sadly, still only a miniscule percentage of the market.
-
I still enjoy my IE, it works perfectly fine.
-
Just checked a non-tech-oriented site I admin; here's the browser stats for September:
-
Out of how many people may I ask?
-
No Safari or Camino? pfft...
-
A bit above 100 unique visitors per day.
-
Yeah Firefox! The only open source program I've financially supported, but one I'm very proud to have supported.
-
But...IE works fine. I love my IE.
The only open source thing I use is....
FREESPACE 2 SOURCE CODE PROJECT!!!111!1111oneone
-
IE, is a timebomb....

I'm freakin' invincible!

It's kinda funny, Blitz is mentioning the only open source program he uses.
In my case, I have a small list of the "only" closed source applications I run on this box. :D

Eh? What are saying? Am I using other open source programs without knowing it? Your post is a little confusing, Kamikaze.
-
I'm saying it's amusing that while you're indicating you use very few open source programs (probably true for most people here), I can count the closed source programs I use on this computer on one hand. :p

:wtf:
Are you aware that using more than one anti-virus or firewall software will lead to problems. These softwares are using low level drivers for example, which may conflict and cause god knows what problems. If a virus is found, it may very well be that none your virus scanners can actually do anything about it.
Best description for it would be that you have ten very hungry dogs and then you throw a piece of food in middle of them. They start fighting over that piece of food.
So using more than one anti-virus software will actually weaken your protection.

And I bet you're no more protected than someone with a bit of common sense who runs FireFox / Thunderbird with no virus protection is.
Besides, boasting that IE is great is like saying that Windows 95 is great. Yeah, it may work for you in your situation. But that certainly doesn't make it "great".
EDIT: Err... just to clarify - I'm not saying that you lack common sense. I'm just saying that using a bit of common sense while browsing with Firefox and emailing w/ Thunderbird can afford one a very good level of security.

I use the virus scanners to protect me from downloaded files. I tried using Firefox...but...uh...I had some FREAKY problems.
Besides, my CPU IS invincible. Just you try and hack me!*
*Actually, please don't.

1. ATI Graphics Drivers (Don't need them, but they do better 3d accel. than the X11 drivers)
2. Blackdown JDK/JRE
3. Homeworld (Installed with winex)
4. Space Empire IV (Installed with winex)
5. Winex

Eh... how about like a wordpad type thing, Kami? Have one of those open source?
-
Hm... I have to update to 1.0... I still have one of the beta's...

Well, I'm a commandline guy so I stick with the classic vim editor for simple text work.
I have abiword installed for a word processor, it's pretty good.
-
You don't have, say, FreeSpace 2 on that system of yours, Kamikaze? No other games?
-
sounds fishy to me.
-
FS2 is open source so he wouldn't have counted it :D
-
BTW, for those who didn't notice, they (http://www.spreadfirefox.com/) not only made their 1 million mark in half the time, but they also kept up that pace and made 2 million in the 10 days originally allotted for 1 million. :p
-
Erm... whats with the spread FireFox things now?
-
Is it faster than IE to load pages though?
-
And moreso, how can I get one?
-

Ditto...
It is more effective than IE for a lot of reasons... One such reason, is that while it uses your cache to load frewuently visited pages, it ALSO checks to make sure you have the newest page... IE and AOL stopped opening Gmail, because the screen that said Loading would be cached, and it wouldn't know to redirect... Therefore, FF>everything :p
-
hmmmmmmmm........
*decides to try it out, just for the heck of it :D

x= not firefox
FF>X

Tried opera, didn't like it
Tried IE, couldn't trust it
Tried Firefox, loved it
-
out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference between Firefox and just plain Mozilla, because I'm using Mozilla, having switched from Firefox (having switched from IE)?
-
Never used Mozilla but I think it was closer to Netscape than Firefox is. Firefox is their next generation if you will...thats what they say anyways.
I've been using it for the summer now and I'm extremely impressed. Its faster than IE, more secure than IE, has better features, is very small to download and run, doesn't have alot of extra un-needed features, in-general its very good. Haven't run into too many problems with switching either.
I'm also using Thunderbird for my mail client. Also very impressive!

why? Surely you can make up your own opinions?
-
Firefox just seems to work much smoother for me that IE6 did. I think it might load a bit faster...that, and it looks nicer too.

yeah, but you all seem so eager to convert everyone to firefux users, so all I'm asking for is reasonable arguments that could make me try it out. as it is now, all you can say is "I leik it! 0pera and EI suxxxor!"
-
It's more secure.
It runs faster.
There's tabbed browsing. (Which can be disabled.)
There's excellent support.
It's not made by Microsoft.
It's skinnable.
It supports most plugins. (So far.)
Etcetera.
WE don't need to convince you. If you like what you're using keep what you're using. If you dislike it, however, give it a try, and se for yourself.

It's the most comfortable interface I've ever used, it's far more secure than IE (I can't account for it Vs other browsers), it's reliable, it has a load of nice integrated things, such as pop-up blockers and the DL manager, and I wouldn't swap it for any other browser I've tried.
The reason I didn't like Opera was that when I used it, IIRC it had integrated adverts unless you paid. There was another browser I tried, which had a unique yet horribly uncomfortable interface, whose name I forget.
all I can say, is that I tried Opera, Firefox and a number of other freeware browsers at the same time (as IE had become completely non-functional, crashing whenever a new window popped up) - and I picked Firefox as being by far the best, based upon simply how I felt using it.
-
And for the last time, where do I get these cute Get Firefox avatars?
-

-
Sandwich was giving them out in this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,27259.0.html), but he's since halted that for a bit. Pending a better distribution method.
I want this one:

:p
-
I went to the Dark Side and got firefox. Not that different...but still better. Guess I can get rid of three of my four virus scanners now :D

I've been using Firefox for three days now, and I'm definately impressed. Bye bye, IE6. I won't see you for a while.
-
Count me in, among the converts
-
The following grows.
-
Raa: Yeah, that one's my favorite, too, but I just wish they had a black BG version. Ah well.
-
Couldn't make one, and link to it?
-
Nope. :p
-
Have they improved the integration of DL managers?
That's been my only gripe with FF has been the DL manager. I want to be able to integrate Flashget or DAP without having to get a plugin.
-
i am also impressed by FF. Been using it for a couple of days now, and its really a fast litle browser. I wont be using IE for a while now

I don't see why you'd need to. You can pause FF downloads and resume them later as well.
-
Flashget has a more intensive connection dialog, can do multiple thread downloading and has support for FTP browsing.
I hadn't gotten down to trying all the downloading FF features especailly since I'm on dialup now, but I'm not 100% positive, that it feature all of that.
(... and some of us, have tons of stuff boomarked in Flashget for downloading 'till eternity. :b - being an anime fan has strange sideeffecs)

*still wants an advert*
:nervous:

Opera used to be good but the recent versions have been really lame. I don't know what they think they are doing - The interface is so cluttered it's horrible and what used to be a simple slick browser is now a convolutted mess :(
I still use Opera 6 because it's so much faster and less of a resource hog than Opera 7. My only regret is that Opera 6 has trouble rendering a lot of mainstream websites properly :(
Firefox is okay, but I think it's vasty overrated and over-hyped. It's not that much faster than IE and is just as much of a resource hog, if not more so.
IMHO, Konqueror was way better as a standalone browser - It has none of the rendering problems Firefox sometimes has (I think Konqueror has the most compatible rendering engine of all the non-IE browsers atm. Never had a site look messed up on it.). It's a pity Konq is part of KDE otherwise I think it would have done well.
That said, Firefox is still pretty damned cool for one reason: You can customise the living buggery out of it! :D
The extensions system is really *really* cool. You can make the browser into anything you want with them :)
The customisability alone is what keeps it on my system - I've Opera-fied the interface as much as I can, even down to my beloved mouse-gesturing. It's great! ;)
-
I am using FF and the Thunderbird e-mail client for a few months now and i love it.
-
What's the diference between Firefox 0.8 and 1.0?
-
uh... one is 0.8, and the other is the full version? duh? :nervous:

I alternate between them, I don't run them all at once, in case there is something one of them doesn't catch.

I almost went to lenghts with this post but I still think its foolish. A classical example of overshoot which I see a little too much at my work. Although undershoot is much more common... :blah:
