Hi there, i have a question regarding FREDing.
How in the hell do you make an objective HAVE to be completed.
Like if i had a mission where the objective was to destroy Fenris 1, and protect Poseidon 1, and i warped out having done neither, currently all i can do is write a very stern debriefing, the game still allows the player to carry on to the next mission.
Its proberbly the stupidest little thing im missing but i cant seem to get it!
-
Um, have you looked at the objectives editor?
-
When in the campaign editor, make your branches look something like this.
Where "Kill Dem Shivans" would be the Objective that HAS to be completed.
If that isn't true, then the player will be forced to repeat the mission through the repeat mission branch.
-
Thanks man, thats what ive been missing.
I figured it must be some sort of option im missing, but that actually makes sence now, thanks muchly :D
-
No problem, the first time I played with branches I had it backwards. So when you failed the mission you got to proceed... :p
-
Good LORD im rusty, i cant even remember how to use the Campaign Editor!
*Dusts off "Help" files* ;)
-
If you haven't already you might want to look into the FRED Academy (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,26744.0.html)

If you fail a primary goal, you can't complete the mission in campaign mode.

Huh? That can't be right. It's been a long while since I built a campaign file but what about all the missions in FS2 where you failed the primary goal cause you were supposed to (like their finest hour etc).
-
Invalidate 'em after they've been failed.
-
I do hate to mention my own campaign (bad taste, wot wot) but in STL, the Ironclad is destroyed, the primary objective fails, the campaign continues nevertheless... but no invalidate-goal sexp.
???

I do it in another way: I set the proceed to next mission true and the 'repeat mission' checks if an event named as 'Mission' is failed'

There are more ways to fail a mission than succeed so logically that's the wrong way round TopAce but hey, whatever works for you :D
-
I just make it so its impossible not to fail the mission and write the debrieffing accordingly.
-
I've just strung a couple of missions together. Not only can you progress from a mission with a failed objective. You can actually progress from a mission with nothing but failed objectives.
The campaign file is all determining in this matter as far as I can see. It even determines which debriefing music you get to a certain degree.

I stick to things I got used to. It is simpler and more familiar for me.

A way to do what Magatsu?
If you mean making the player have to repeat a mission again cause he failed of course there is. My post was only addressing Black Wolf's claim that you couldn't progress if you failed mission objectives.
AFAIK the control over progressing resides solely in the campaign file. That's how you force the player to repeat a mission and also how you decide what has to be done to progress.

Not saying you're doing anything wrong but I think people who are learning would probably be better off doing things the other way round. You're less likely to let a bug slip through that way.
For the more experienced FREDders it's fine cause we never release missions with bugs in them
