though sometimes i almost cry or laugh my ass off when I look at those costumes.

Man, some of those are great.  I dig the imperial Grand Admiral costume.  Some of them are really hokey though, I've never seen a Twi'Lek with such deformed lekku (my favorite starwars alien, btw).  Does it mean anythign that I don't recognize 70% of the characters there? hmmmm

How can grown men (and women) do this to themselves? It boggles the mind.

...though some of them were very cool, especially the full Halo team, and the big Starwars group picture with like 50 people in it.

It's simple, they do something they enjoy. :)

It's called 'a hobby'. Some people paint, others write. These people make costumes and show it off just like anyone would show off a good painting or a good story.

I have to be honest, these people wouldn't last 5 minutes in Glasgow if they turned up like that........

Cosplay amuses me.

What amuses me more, though, is going without a costume. People automatically assume you aren't the uber-fanboy.
