Title: Dawn of War
Post by: an0n on September 24, 2004, 06:53:45 am
It kicks so much goddamn ass.

The best way to describe it would probably be: Starcraft 2.

Only, online Starcraft (and previous Warcraft games) it's not simply a case of building everything as fast as possible and marching 300 Terran Marines into the enemy base and winning.

To build in different areas you need to control strategic and critical points.

And as for the difficulty.......I had a 6-player skirmish going with 2 comps on my side and 3 against me. I got my goddamn ass handed to me. I was fighting for the same strategic point for over 2 hours, taking it, losing it, retaking it, having one of those collosal elephant things wipe out half my guys.....

It's crafted so that you can never do with just a single type of unit or a single strategy. If you try the en-masse thing, it'll work for a while, but then something stupidly huge will come barging in and obliterate your defences in one strike.

Just to keep the territory I had (all 3 points of it), I had to build about 20 automated missile turrets, drop Dreadnaughts from orbit as quickly as possible, put Predator tanks on continuous contruction and STILL rely on my allies for periodic rushes of friendly troops to beat back the massive onslaughts the computer kept throwing at me.

This game kicks some serious ass. And the intro movie is truly amazing in regards to quality and gore.

Anyway, I'm tired.

lol.

I love the intro movie yeah.

I'll have to buy sooner or later, but over the next couple months there are heaps of games coming out that I'm looking forward too.

Battle for middle Earth, Rome, Doom3 for Xbox, and I daresay that HL2 might make it before holiday season...

DoW does sound awsome though... :D

you cant compare it to starcraft because stracraft is classic. it had one of the best story ever wirten for a pc game ,ever!.
so do Warc3.

i think though the real competiton is btween warc3 and DOW, i still think warc3 is better for single and multi but Dow multiplayer community just begun so i need to wait a few months before deciding.

beside Dow is very warcraftish in its gameplay. very.

Dawn of War is fun :)

I enjoy it more than War3 due to the macromanagement, not micromanagement.

Rome: Total War is also awesome. It's the game that I was hoping Master of Orion 3 would have been. It's major flaw is not having the campaign mode as a multiplayer option, which would have rocked in so many ways.

I'm going to have a hard time juggling time between life, classes, and these two games :p

They removed that because games would take ~2 years to complete, IIRC

I've tried like 4 times to install the demo, and each time it tells me there is no space, even though I have a few hundred megs more than required.

RICTOR SMASH!!

get this: to accomodate the demo, which is about 300 megs, I have unistalled the following demos: Farcry, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty and Splinter Cell, which total more than a gig of space, and I STILL don't have enough. The thing wioth my comp is, it almost always shows the diskspace wrong, so any time when you need an accurate number, you have to run Scandisk. But I've done that, restarted, and still not enough.

and to save even more space, the actual demo file is on another computer.

It's because its stupid installing the game, it extracts all the files, then extracts them all again, THEN copies it to the install folder. So you really need 4 times what it says.

Starcraft may be classic, but that doesn't mean that a newer game won't shatter it.  i mean i've played Starcraft almost daily for the last few years... until i started playing dawn of war.

so u are going to compare doom2 to doom3 aswell? you cant compare a game to a classic, because for its time it had superb graphic, and for its time it had the best storyline and owns movies. and for it time it had the best music \voice acting around...

well you get the point i just think that until starcraft2 will come out u cant compare DOW to SC1 unless Dow will become classic when SC2 will be gold :)

That didnt make a goddamn bit of sense.
Either way, you cant even compare the two. Sure, they're both an RTS, but other than the perspective, they're completely different in terms of gameplay.

of course you can compare the two.  they're both RTS, they both have the same engine setup, i mean, i don't know, you don't seem to have much logic, so arguing with you is probably pointless, but you DEFINATELY can compare the two games, and i'm telling you, that Dawn of War beats Starcraft in almost every sense.  don't start defending Starcraft now, becuase i've been more of a Starcraft fan than anyone on this forum... check my Battle.net profile:  3000+ games played, and that's just on multiplayer.

Also, Starcraft didn't set any precedents really... it was a great game, still is, but there were other RTS games that came out at the time, such as age of empires, Warcraft, command and conquer, etc. etc.  Starcraft just got really popular because it was a good game.  it had well rounded races, good graphics, nice story, etc.

Anyway, point is:  you can compare the two... Dawn of War > Starcraft.  Just like you can compare a 2002 Thunderbird to a 1959 Thunderbird... one's a classic, but so what.  big deal.  you can still compare them.  and i still say:  With Dawn of War's release, MANY starcraft fans are going to be switching to it.  myself included.  just get on Starcraft battle.net and go to a public chat channel and mention Dawn of War, and see how many people start talking about it.  Starcraft's multiplayer popularity is going to start decreasing rapidly... watch.  the ONLY thing that Starcraft has on its side at the moment is that it's a lot cheaper to buy the game than dawn of war, and older computers can play it.  other than that, everyone's going to be at least TRYING dawn of war.  myself included.

Kthx.

So why can't any modern game get that adiction that Starcraft produces in the players?
Title: Dawn of War
Post by: Stealth on September 25, 2004, 11:32:10 am
well there hasn't really been any real RTS released since Broodwar... except for Warcraft III, and Warcraft III HAS taken off... the community keeps growing.

i think the main thing that is keeping Starcraft going is the system specs... you don't need a super-fast computer to play it, or a super-fast connection.

remember though:  we're not talking about which game has the most addiction... because obviously the 6 year old starcraft takes that over the 1 week old dawn of war... we're comparing the GAME itself, and in that aspect, Dawn of War, i think, wins.  i'm pretty sure starcraft is going to continue to have strong multiplayer support, for the reasons above and probably others... i mean who knows, it's always hard to predict or explain something like that.  but we all know the Koreans are heavy Starcraft players, and i'm sure it'll continue to be that way.

The intro movie kicks ass.

And once you've played through the game you notice all the little references. Like the drop-ships coming in after the flag is planted and the point taken. And the Ork WAAAAGH signaling the Ork charge.
