Title: Sky Captain.
Post by: Deepblue on September 28, 2004, 07:18:42 pm
Surprised no one else has seen it/posted about it yet.

I saw it last night and I was extremely impressed (not with the plot or characters but the graphics/action scenes)

:D

I also saw the Halo 2 theatrical trailer. It's surprising how appatizing a game can look when its on a cinema screen in its high resolution glory.

Whenever I see the previews and trailers my mind screams at the CGI used. It looks like..... someone made it out of their garage.

Never gonna see this one, my mind would be screaming all the way, and I don't like to be out of breath.

The CGI, while a blatant overload of it, looks very cool, and lends a "smooth" feeling to the entire movie, which I quite enjoyed.
The movie is a a great retro thriller. No complex themes, no complicated fight scenes or useless sex. It's like watching an updated 1940s movie, which is what it was meant to be. The movie is truly an awesome and unique (to this age) film.

I loved it. I saw it with my dad and little brother last Saturday, and yes, the movie had the "bling effect" from the 1940's movies where they made the movies in a colorful sort of gold coating way. I dont care if it was all CGI, the movie was glamerous in its own fasion, and the story wasnt like the outrageous sci fi you would see in some cases with marines and plasma rifles, but instead kept to the imagination of the 1940's, like giant robots, blimps, fighter planes, Angelina Jolee, and much much more.

I saw the last (at least, it looked like they were the last) 10 minutes of it, after seeing Collateral. I loved the CG style and art direction, and any movie with Angelina Jolie (as a one-eyed pirate no less) can't be all that bad.

Oh and, when the plane surfaced and I suddenly realized the whole previous battle had been taking place underwater...cool.

I'll probably see it some time, though I should point out that I can.not.stand. Gweneth Paltrow.

That was a "Sky Captain looks awful and I'm not planning on seeing it because IMHO a movie without a plot that just looks pretty isn't worth my valuable time and money."

it was a good movie.  don't go see it and expect it to be like indiana jones... it's not going to be.  the movie's set up like a graphic novel, or an old comic.  the colors, effects, etc.

I just watched, and I have to say I was pleasently suprised. True, the dialogue and acting isnt anything special, but the effects DO give it an aged old comic-book feel. Its just a plain and simple comic book film from the 40s. I quite liked it. Innocent fun.

Note that it was based off a 1940s radio serial, so it's tried its hardest to evoke that era; much like The Shadow, The Rocketeer, and Tim Burton's Batman. I love the retro design of that era, and I thought the movie was gorgeous. :)

Saw it over the weekend, very nice.  Seemed a bit hurried in places and what does his plane run on anyway?  Those British flying airfield things were the best part in the whole movie.

I thought it was terrible.

I know it went for the retro appeal in all aspects but lets face it, those movies had thin plots, 1D characters and brutal special effects.

Sky Captain improved on one of these.
