[color=66ff00]Wow, that's quite a jpeg. :)

Good design, I like the staggered guns and the attention to detail is as I expect from you; somewhat scary. :D

I dub thee Tankzilla and await the destruction of Tokyo.

Seen it on SB :D

I wouldn't really call that monster a simple 'tank' . More a land dreadnaught :drevil:

Out of the whole thing, the bumper on the front gives me the biggest laugh.  Keeps those 80,000 tons of nice shiny armor from getting dented by errant buildings ;)

The model is great.  The tank/battleship concept is something I've not seen before (besides peeking at this once or twice over at sfm) and this pulls it off well.  Colossal.

It's incredibly ****ing annoying that you can make something like that on a whim.
Title: So... Who here likes big tanks?
Post by: Rictor on October 01, 2004, 08:10:23 pm
I love it.

My only criticism is that it looks less like a single tank and more like a convoy. You need to bulk up the links between the different sections a bit. I would also make it the width:length ratio a bit better, again, to make it look like a single unit, but thats just me.

tres cool.

Land Battleship, the only problem is weight.  Something that size would have to be made out of 100% carbon fiber or it would sink under it's own weight until it displaced enough soil to "float" it.  That bloody thing would carve it's own riverbeds.  Looks great though.  That begs the question though, why don't you model for FS2 some Styxx?

Fuel economy, trying to find a parking space, and all those annyoing little details should be forgotten, just this once.

You'd be sure to have decent legspace....

I like it, but it does look like a train, not like a single vehicle.

Btw, is that rendered with Brazil, or is it just regular 3dsmax without any funky plugins? I just wonder, it would look much better with soft shadows. Sorry, being picky. ;)

Styxx models for MT (he did the mainhall, in particular).  Don't think he skins, though.

He skins, just not UV mapped ships. He does the tile ones mainly. (Although he did do a pretty decent job on one ship... too bad I have to go over it...) (which this reminds me, I've been neglecting...)

As a matter of fact, I'm working on textures for this beast. Here's a preview:

And it's rendered on MAX5, with a Skylight and Light Tracer on: it does have soft shadows, but you can't really tell because the camera is so far away.

:p

An I am modeling for FS2 - lots of ships and models for MT, we just don't really like to show everything before releasing the whole campaign because it would ruin the surprise. I generally start working on a hi-poly model after a long stretch of MT-related work (or a particularly stressful period of real life work) to relief some of the stress. After I'm done with this I'll get back to MT full steam.

EDIT: Blast, posted with my brother's login. :p

Not necessarily a bank carver.

Saw the Space Shuttle's own track vehicle? Does the Empire state building sink?

No it doesn't and it's made of stone, I know it has a solid foundation but it's not force or weight that matters but pressure.

If that monstar has big enough tracks it can dispense it collosal weight on a big enough surface. It can be made of steel and armor.

I like that stuff - I wonder when games will have that level of detail.

Good stuff...

The Crawler's track is solid reinforced concrete about 30-40 feet think, IIRC.

Also, the Empire State Building doesn't move and it's foundation is even deeper.

I agree, very original, very cool. It totally reminds me of the tanks from Super Mario 3! Way more rockin' though. Yes, I was wondering how many polys as well. Also in your final render, I think it'd be cool to see some crew manning the beast (even though they'd be relatively small in comparison to the tank), it'd help with the scale. I didn't even notice the rails until Raa mentioned them, and then I thought of the scale and :eek2: . Anyway, great work Styxx! :)

Whoa...damn it!

...mind if I borrow a few of your techniques/ideas for something that I'm building?

But...damn it! It's awesome! What's the crew compliment? 250? 500? 750? looks about the size of an air craft carrier...but...it somehow looks like it wouldn't fit 2000 people in it...

The detail in that is fantastic. It reminds me somewhat of your big capship...speaking of which...

Just remember that it's huge. Small detailing (patches of discolouration and such) would merge together into a flowing kinda colouring.

Oh and add a ****load of nasty rust, and use some bump-mapping to do it.

I have version 6 myself, along with an older 3 version. But 3DS Max scares me, the menus are all hidden. Unless we have a 24 inch monitor, most menus remain hidden, and those that are not occupy a too big percentage of the screen. The viewports are terribly small. That´s why i like TS, like 95% of the screen in used for the viewports.
Plus TS has the "ring" tool, that 3DS Max doesn´t. Using the ring alone, i can shape a primitive a million diferent ways, with just a move of the mouse.
But i realize i have to learn 3DS Max, because TS doesn´t cut it anymore. I guess i´ll have to force myself to learn.
Btw, does Max have a multi- monitor capability? I mean, can i use it with 2 monitors at the same time? If i could plug in a second monitor to display the menus, and use the main monitor to display the viewports, that would be great!

That´s some awesome work.
Now if only you could do the same with a spaceship...

Ya´know, i liked that tank so much that i started making one myself!:drevil:
Not nearly as big in size or detail, but it´s still the most detailed and high poly model i have ever made! Count is now at 18000, just about what TS can handle.
If Styxx doesn´t mind me tankjacking his thread, i might post a screen or two of it, maybe tomorrow.
Who knows, maybe someone starts a tank MOD for FS!

As promised, the first shots of my little tank (miniscule in comparison to Styxx´s), still a long way from finished. The problem is that TS has given me all that it could, and now refuses to handle so many polys...
I still need to greeble most flat surfaces and the entire front, and finish the inside. My idea is making it a walk-in model.

Hope you don´t mind Styxx. If so, i will take them down, no prob. I just think these shots don´t warrant a thread of their own.
Anyway, can you tell me what´s the poly count on yours? Just to compare TS´s performance (or lack of it) with 3DS Max. I know i should change, but i tried a few minutes ago and i just can´t make out anything...

EDIT:
I´ve taken out the pics, leaving just one, because i opened a dedicated thread. That way i don´t hogg anybody´s thread.Go check it out.

Not really. That transport is the equivalent of a chopper, and it's all it carries (besides drones).

Hmm.  That VTOL reminds me of something I'm working on; the front end at least.

EDIT; even though it doesn't look anything like it.... it looks.... familiar.

do you actually have a use for all this stuff?

Perhaps he´s considering selling the model to some gaming company. Wouldn´t it be nice if we were actually paid for having fun?:D

Considering the awesome ammount of detail and excellent modelling technique, i wouldn´t be surprised if this model was used on some cutscene or CGI movie.

Vai em frente, cara!

Remade the anti-tank guns, to look more like sand-alone guns than actual tank turrets:

I like them better this way.

The first picture of that tank looks almost exactly like a segmented battleship on treads.......

Hmm, dunno about the actual looks, but they make more sense if that's a complete rotate/tilt mount they're on. Now they can shoot down. :D

I liked the other turrets better. These look a bit "off". If they are supposed to be some energy type weapon, then ok. But if they are supposed to be a standard gun, it doesn´t work. Simply because the gun is only supported by the axis, and has no way for the gun to be recharged... Where would the ammo go through?
:wtf:
