Title: Ground Control 2
Post by: Sandwich on October 03, 2004, 07:27:29 am
Forgot to mention this a few weeks ago, but you guys really disappointed me. GC2's release came and went, and I didn't know about it because I was depending on you all to post a thread about it! Humph!

Anyway, I've been playing it recently, and boy, is it fun. I love tactical games, and this one lets you pretty much fully implement any tactics you'd ever want. Another thing is the amazing sense of scale the game gives you - it must be the first (RTS, mind you) game I've seen where the infantry are scaled properly to the vehicles, buildings, gun emplacements and everything.

Not to mention the stunning graphics. ;)

The 2 playable sides (NSA and Viron) have sufficiently different units, and radically different ways to get those units, that it (almost) covers up for the 3rd side (Terrans) not being playable. ;)

And does the Virons' tech seriously remind anyone else of the Yuuzhan Vong from Star Wars NJO books?

I've never heard of it, but from the look of the screenshots and the info on it I'll probably be playing it really soon. Great another addiction :p

Havent read the books, but it is, indeed, a glorious game to play. My friend thought he was ready to go toe to toe with me online when the demo was still out, and I had been playing it for at least 2 weeks straight on end.

Well, he gets on, tries a rush but my tanks and rocket launchers cream him oh so suddenly. Then I secure my perimiter and set up a nice, NICE thick artillery squadron ALL along the bank of the river, find random spots, and have them pelt that location continuously for the duration of the game. Well, he decides to sneak in through the backdoor, and so when he does, I call in immediate troop deployment, and keep him busy at the main landing pad while I sneak in all my infantry into HIS base, and capture all of HIS landing pads and victory locations.

By that time I had kept his forces at my base busy enough where I could call MORE in, and by then I secured his two primary LZ's and then my own. He was left to defend at this bunkered position on a hill. I just had to blow him out with artillery. JOY!

How does it compare to the first game?  I played that a few times at a friend's house and enjoyed it; I may have to take a look at this one :).

GC2 become boring quite quickly. I never bothered with the Viron campaign.

Anyways, instead of GC2, I recommend Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War and Evil Genius. Both games will hook you. DoW is a bit short but will not leave you cold. Evil Genius on the other hand takes a long time to complete.

I am sure you haven't heard of Evil Genius but the game is just great.

In a case you are wondering how I have gotten my hands on the game already, I was sent a copy for preview purposes. ;7 I wish I had more time to play it though, as it has been very limited for some time. :(

I don't play multiplayer. I prefer a good single player campaign/storyline much more, regardless of a game. Unless its multiplayer only, in that case I won't bother with the game at all.

Am I the only one to hate controling the Virons? I can't see their entire tech tree from the "build" menu :(
