Hurrah! They did it! :D

So now what? Another prize for first person to the moon? First orbit?
Congrats to Burt Rutan and his team though.
-
wheres kazan, i need to rub this in :D

It's just a damn shame that it's taken commercial enterprises to get this going, this should be government funded.
-
You of course realize that the entire point is to make it happen without government funding, right? I applaud the effort, but the lack of participation isn't particularly encouraging.
-
Government can only do one thing in a project like this...F*** is up!
I'm sorry, but in my opinion, NASA(who I like for what they have done in the past) is the biggest bueracratic cluster**** in known space. I mean for crying out loud, it shouldn't be a question of whether a specific lithium hydoxide filter will fit in a given craft(Apollo 13), but how many they have.
-
Actually for what it's mission is, NASA is moderately effective for its operating budget. No offense to the X-prize competitors, but crossing the 100km mark and achieving prolonged orbit (and then maintaining living conditions that high up) are two very different things. While private funding may eventually catch up, the won't for quite a while. And keep in mind that a lot of the technologies used in these private ventures only exist because of the manned space programs.
And when refering to Apollo 13, by all estimations those three astronauts should have died. The NASA that prevented that from happening should be commended (not that it's the same as the present-day institution). When every ounce of weight counts, well, you plan what you take very carefully, and the life support systems that they used to survive were never ment to be used for as long as they were.

I liked that movie...

i have nothing against nasa cept maybe the ikiss principle. systems (wether they be technological or beurocratic) work better when they are kept simple. it also tends to make things cost less. but one thing nasa wont do that corporations can is to let notmal people fly into space. this is probibly the only case i am in favor of capitolisim.
