Title: Weee! Upgrading!
Post by: Taristin on October 04, 2004, 10:56:50 am
W@@t! :p

I just bought the best upgrades I could ever get for my PC!

Firstly, My system specs:

Mobo: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
CPU: AMD Duron @601Mhz
RAM: 128 Mb (Single Channel mode) DDR266
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256Mb (cat 4.4)

Now, I'm witing for FedEx to deliver my shiny new:

AMD Athlon 2800+ XP (Barton Core) 333FSB (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-377&depa=1)
1 Gb DDR400 RAM (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=20-220-006&DEPA=1)

I was totally amazed by the reviews left for the memory. And the price was incredible! Plus it seems to come with the cool little red who's-it's. :D  I can't wait! The anticipation is killing me!!

Wish me luck! :D:D:D

Wow, your upgrade brings you to just below the spec I've been running on for a few years now.

Why the 2800 w/ 333Mhz FSB? 400 would have gotten you a significant overall speed increase.

Oh, and I have the same MB - good one. :)

...And you've probably told me that fact a couple of times before. :p

What kind of power supply do you have right now?

Ohh, a Braton processor (spelling on purpose!) :D

Cool, that - really helps with rendering and working on modelling, doesn't it? (hint hint nudge nudge) :)

Aldo: :p to you too, then...

Sarny: Because price is a big concern to me. I couldn't afford a 400 FSB chip, but it can be OC'd quite a bit. Anyway, coming from a Duron to a 2800 will be a major speed increase. ;7

Kosh: A cheap one. Should probably be upgraded soon, too.

Lighty: Yes :p

if your going to OC and if you are not getting a water cooling system or somthing I suggest this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-109-113&depa=0) heatsink and this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-613&depa=0) fan and this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-100-007&depa=0) this Thermal paste

MUAHAHAHAH although after reading you say that money is an issue... you may have to work extra to get these although you can check the reviews of the preformance for yourself. :thepimp:  worth every penny

Mein gott!

If it weren't $56.00 I'd get one! Everything else on the list is reasonable.

Maybe it'll be on sale somewhere/time?

Oh, care to post a PSU, too? Must be over 300W, since my PC'll have a 294 Watt at max usage and I only have a 250W ATM...

Nice stuff, though I'm still happy to have that Duron in my machine. One of the early Applebred-cores (Tbred-B with lower cache memory) which were unlocked by factory default. :D Cheapest FSB400-CPU ever. ;)

heh. Mine is crappy. I can't get it to OC over 700MHz, and I can't go over 650 if I want it to not freeze with a little load.

Original clock was 1400, running at 1800 with 400 FSB. I could get it higher, but I got a cheap low noise cooler. I'm not feeling in the mood for trying and frying. :D

check out these results he was using the same fan in the first test as I suggested and he had overclocked his 2500+ to 3200+ :D

http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/thermalright/sp97/p3.html

or look at these he has a 2800+ overclocked to 3200+ also the same fan

hehe :drevil: :thepimp:

30c Idle and 34c load... on a high end overclocked system drool

If you were planning to OC, you should've gotten a 2500+ M or 2600+ M.  Oh well, good-bye easy 3300+ speeds =/

Still nice though =)

I'm not sure if I'm going to OC yet. Maybe once the novelty of having a CPU 4x faster than my current one wears off =p

Oh, that's another issue:  Memory installation.

My a7n8x-e deluxe has 3 memory bays.  I'll be putting in 2 memory sticks. Which bays do I install them to for best performance?

The two closest to the CPU is the rule of thumb.

Enermax power supplies are good quality. I would think that 350 watts or greater would be enough. It is better to have a nice buffer.

Enermax is nice.  The separate voltage rail for 12V means even a 350W one can feed an overclocked 6800 Ultra
