I am having some issues with Bobs shadow build 3. Namely I cant play most of the missions in the tech room. Whenever I click on it and it finishes loading up, I get a CTD. This is an annoyance as these missions work fine with taylors build, and I really enjoyed the shadows...
Any chance we can have shadows implemented in future builds.
-
Shadows are not supposed to work in mission, that they have has been a bit of luck. The build's highly experimantal, so I don't think there's much chance on getting support for it.
-
actualy that one was suposed to work properly in mission, but it was just toying around with the technology involved so it isn't suposed to be bugless, it was just suposed to barely get it working.
-
Only bugs I have with that build is the mission load problem and the fact that shadows have a weird effect on specular areas that are under the shadows as well as thrusters (it darkens them).
-
yeah, I have it setup to subtract light in shadows, wich causes some wirdness in places were things are overlit
-
so....when will you be revisiting the shadow code bob? how about at least showing it to Taylor so he can put it in? :D
-
Well yes, it'd be interesting. Especially if it could be made to use a low LOD (LOD 2 or something) for the shadows, so it doesn't drain much performance.
-
That would kill the self shadowing.
-
I think he means it that way that it uses the hiighest LOD for self shadowing and a lower LOD for global shadows.
-
I am looking forward to the shadow implementation. I want to see it at last! In a stable build.
-
I tested a shadowbuild that was posted here some time ago...hadn't got any problems with it...except that it slowed down the system.
-
That is the natural consequence.
-
I'll give code to anyone who wants it
-
I do, I do
-
are you a programer/would you know what to do with it?
-
I fiddle around with Visual Studio every so often. Doing builds for macroquest got me started. I could give it a shot see what i turn up with.

I was toying with volumetric fog shadows in the nebula, it didn't work very well, it has all the code you need, and I'm not sure were I put the backup.
