Title: Some of my ship projects...and a question!
Post by: MeekGeek on November 02, 2004, 05:24:09 pm
First up...some fighters! This is a kind of modular concept with ships ranging from a light scout class vessel through to an over-gunned assault fighter!

Then we have some small cap-ships. They were inspired by the Halo 'Pillar of Autumn' when I began wondering what other ships they might have in the fleet.

Then, there is the 'Fleet Auxiliary Carrier....

Of course....you need some bad_guys!

BAd guy fighter type ship......

And the bad-guy Mothership......

And now...for the question!

I converted the scoutship and got it working in FS2 fine. Then, I tried to re-do it with some debris. I added the debris by taking some chunks of the model, copying them, adding a light to form the group, and then re-building. Got no errors compiling, and all seemed well...until the ship blew up under fire and the game crashed. Every time. Any idea why? The model is fine ( it works and blows up OK ) and the debris chunks are copies of parts of the ship....and they don't work! I am at a loss!!!!

The debris problem probably means you have geometry errors in the debris chunks.  I don't know how you made the chunks, but if you used booleans to cut the ship apart then you could easily have unattached faces in that portion of the model that will need to be attached before PCS converts them stably.

Jesus H. Christ, thats good! Newbies Rarely make entrances that big (in fact, the only one I can remember is when Blaise Russel, the Campaign King, arrived with 2 30+ mission campaigns).

F*ckin A

He said he was inspired by the Pillar of Autumn design for a few of them.

Yup....capships are intentionally Halo-ish ;D

I liked the overall design of the PoA and wanted to try and design a few more ships along similar lines. I half wanted to do a Halo mod for FS2 but there were just not enough ship-types shown in the cut-scenes to warrant it, so I have just improvised :D

Once I get this batch textured and working in game, I have some larger vessels to go as well, plus some cargo ships.

Sketched out so far are:

Battleship, Dreadnought, Fleet Carrier, plus a set of cargo vessels and sme new missiles :D

Holy Crap...what exactly is all this going towards?

Excellent work. I wouldn't say that the top ship is very Freespacey but when it's that good who cares! :D

Are you working on a campaign at the moment or just playing about with models?

Karajorma...I don't really know enough yet about modding Freespace to really work on a campaign yet. The models are 'themed' so they go together, which may ultimately lead to a campaign...but time will tell. Looking at the number of unfinished 'WIP' mods I get a goof idea of the amout of work needed to put everything together. My mission building skills are poor and I don't have much experience on ship and weapon tables etc. so it's very much one thing at a time!

For now, I am going to take the models I have, make a few more...and see if enough ships come together :D

There are 2 distinct sides though :)

One is the boxy, geometric 'functional' ships. The other is much more 'organic'. Ever since I watched the first episode of Farscape I was hooked on the idea of 'growing' spaceships. The 'Bad Guys' ships are meant to be along those lines.

Oh...yes...and these are not the only models I have ;) I have a set of 5 crude cargo vessels which I managed to get in game, complete with functional multi-part gun turrets :D  I also have some other vessels with a VERY different look.... Solar sails.... broadside mounted cannon .... Imagine the Battle of Trafalgar ...but in space ;) Will try and post a few more pictures later :)

Those ships are unbelievably good. I would buy you a couple of drinks if I really knew you.

Actually I'm quite glad that you realise the monumental task ahead of you if you want to make your own campaign (It's even worse if you want to do it singlehanded!)

wow im impressed. your ships are good but they dont quite match the freespace universe. wanna work for the ferrium project :D

As far as 'the FS2 Universe' goes, well...I am not too fussed about modelling ships that 'fit' the universe. I build the ships because I like them :D

Besides...Space, as the Hitch Hikers Guide tells us...is Big. That leaves plenty of room for other ship designs ;)

Ferrium certainly looks like an interesting project though. I would certainly have a go at making sme ships for it once it reaches a workable stage :D Especially if it allows turrets orientated other ways, more involved damage modelling and the possibility to properly launch fighters from a cap-ship. Than, of course, there is the need for 3D planets ;)

well ferrium is at such an early stage and the programmers are very open to the requests of the artists. its gonna be alot more versitile that the current freespace engine and will allow better turret placement for sure. the artist staff is not as big as id like. and there is always room for new ship designers.

You rock. :D

The ships are "okay", but I don't think they're especially good - I don't like the general style that much.

This one is the best of the lot:

Good modelling though. You should try your hand at some different designs :)
