Is it possible to track someone's IP through AIM? I heard it was possible, how can you?
-
Yes. Look around, there's a bot or trick of some sort for it.
-
Look around where? :D
-
Actually, on second thought, I'm going to change my response to "hell if I know."
I've been looking around for hte last 20 minutes and I can't find anything. I remember looking around for such a program a few years ago though, and I thought I found something but never used it. Guess not.
I'd ask around some AIM forums though.
-
can you get their IP addy? if so, use TRACERT.
Open a DOS window(run, "command" or "cmd" depending on the windows version)
enter "tracert *single space* IP address"
so to trace the route of, let's say 127.0.0.1, it would be:
tracert 127.0.0.1
This works for .com addresses too if you don't know the IP, but you have to enter the whole address.
tracert http://www.google.com
I forget exactly what the primary use for it is. I think it's used by Network Admins to localize where an error is occuring in the network.

www.imchaos.com
puts a link in your profile and tracks who clicks on it.
-
i know that there is a sniffer for icq, that tracks which webpages you visit, but never heard of ip tracking in AIM
-
well if you can get the person to direct connect to you, then you can find out their ip for sure, but otherwise, i dunno... it'd be hard because they're going through the AIM server, which is coordinating all the connections, trying to be "safe", so you'll probably get to the AIM server IP, and nothing else :-/
-
AIM is, for all intents and purposes (for you people anyway), unsnoopable.
The only way you can **** with it and find **** out about people is to have them open a file-transfer connection or some other direct-link with you and check your own connections, or to use an exploit to directly **** with the bugs in their client.
-
yup.
it's pretty fool-proof. the only way to get someone's IP over AIM (that i know of, and apparently an0n agrees with me) would be to have them click something. click a link in your profile, open a file or direct connection, etc.
if you DO get some sort of direct connection going, then start -> command -> netstat -n . look for the one with port 4443.
if you can get them to click a link, then go winsock and VB. there's actually a bunch you can do if you get them to click a link, rather simple.
-
If you know them, the easiest thing to do is to IM them with:
"OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!! ----> http://forum.domain.com/whereyouhave/modstatus/showthread.php?threadid=123456789 (http://forum.blah.com/whereyou/mod/thread.php?threadid=123456789)"
Then check the Guest IP's on the Who's Online for people viewing that thread.
I do it all the time to tards on IRC.
-
that'd work.
there's many, many ways to do it if you can get them to click a link ;)
-
Thanks all :) That IMchaos site looks like it has something to do it easy with, but the problem is you need an invitation code to register....can anyone help me out in this regard?
EDIT: And does it work for Yahoo, as well?
-
I don't think that IMchaos will actually give you the IP of whoever clicked your profile or link or whatever... it's most likely just going to give you their screenname.
-
the demo actually shows that you can find someone's IP/Location.
Witness:
http://www.imchaos.com/link/example/
But I haven't quite figured this out: Do I need to register, or can I just use the Linkspy thingy on the left?
-
I assume that this is for completely legal purposes only?
-
Yes.

ahh but note that to find their IP you have to make them click a link, and i said that was possible (easily possible) a few posts up ;)

I'm suprised this thread hasn't been locked yet..........
-
Why? If he's doing it for legit reasons, there's no harm. Plus, it's not like it's hard to do.
-
Bittorrent can be used for legit reasons, yet when I made a thread asking something very generalized about it, the thread was locked.
That is why I wonder why this thread hasn't been locked yet.
