WorldWind (http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/worldwind/) rocks. Think of our globe, in full hardware-accellerated 3D, mapped with all the satellite pictures NASA can get ahold of. WITH terrain elevation. AND country, city, and even landmark names. Add latitude and logitude, animated tracking of global events, and up to 1 meter pixel resolution via the USGS (United States Geological Survey) data, and you have an absolute winner.
Oh, it's completely free, too. :D
...My house is at latitude 31.73548 by longitude 35.19559. Drop on by anytime. :D
*sticks head out window and smiles for satellite picture* {/semi-obscure reference}

DLoading now, looks interesting....
Minimum 3.1Ghz machine recommended :wtf:
Well, I can do it, but holy maloney! :D
-
Ummm. That's Intel Pentium 3 1 ghz or AMD Athlon or higher
Not
Intel Pentium 3.1 ghz
This bit should have tipped you off.
3D Graphics Card
* nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra
* ATI Radeon 7500
* Intel Extreme Graphics 2
:D
And think that NASA wouldn't know how to capitalise gigahertz correctly :D
-
Meh, Bad Eyesight, one of the joys of turning 30 :p
-
You mean I've got that to look forwards to next year?
As a side point 2GB disk space is fairly extreme for a program you have to download :D
-
yeah, if it weren't for the 2 GB space requirement, I'de be downloading it right now.
-
Thats tight. Thanks for the link.

That's not a requirement. I have a bunch of cached max-res areas (NY, San Fran, Israel, Mt. St. Helens, Miami, etc), and it only takes up ~750mb.
-
It's nice to see our tax dollars being put to good use
-
/me waits for d/l
-
oo nice when i wanna take some pics and make my own overheads of targets in the world i would blow up with my N00b Cannon, i will be sure to post em!
-
253mb?
Hell no.
-
im at 81% right now, dsl just aint fast enough, mabe one day a t1 connection will be mine
-
71%
I'm not even sure exactly what this is, but it looks interesting...pretty pictures :)

I'd rather see it used for this purpose than things like blowing people up.
What would be nice is taking this idea and applying it to a Celestia type program. It uses the current photos/etc. from probes and telescopes to base its info on.
-
Downloaded it. Installer froze my computer.
-
I have a cable modem and half a terabyte of data storage, hell yeah

COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
-
 This is very cool. So far I've only been able to view topo and aerial photos of places instead of the Global Landsat Mosaics. Sometimes I get a connection error and other times the program just refuses to render them. :(

I do agree with that.

Indeed, it's nice to see your tax dollars put to our good use. :D :p
-
ROFL! :D That's a rarity in itself ;)
-
Sweet.
I just installed a half terabyte drive, this looks like a perfect use for that :)
-
Awesome. :)
-
Got it, works pretty shabby, since the server seems to be down right now. It hate up my processing power too. But it's not all that bad considered it's free and all, and I have yet to see it work full power.
This can be soo handy for illustrating schoolwork........
-
Yeah, they're aware of the landsat server issues. I've tried it a few times when it was working, and it's mighty cool, I tell you. ;)
-
Sandwich: Why is it I can only see mainland USA and only in black and white?
-
USGS stands for "United States Geological Survey." Their logo is pasted all over the aerial views in the U.S. The fact that they're the USGS automatically excludes any other country. :hopping:
-
The Landsat server (which provides 15 meter resolution mapping of the entire earth, apparently) has been having trouble. Hmm. Server trouble. Sounds familiar. *ahem* ANYway, jdtangle, you can select which mapping source you use with the buttons up top.
-
I know that :)
Just that black and white USGS map will work... uless I downloaded a add-on
-
HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP!!!
with this thing I just found that there is a nike hercules nuclear missle silo less than 200 feet off of one of my regular bike paths
lat 38.26985
long -89.94937
nike site sL-40L
it's the launcher base! they have all the retractable underground missle storage thingys there!.
I have gone by that thing a dozen times and I always thought it looked sort of odd, honestly it doesn't suprise me that it's military, I always thought it looked like some cult's compound. and holy crap the thing is huge!
I know where I'm going next time the weather warms up a little!
why the **** is this marked on a map!?
from NASA!?!
-
They could have just whited it out like they did Area 51. :doubt:
-
oh my god they did!
-
If you were the person in charge of that wouldn't you have been tempted to break out a copy of Photoshop and start cutting and pasting in ships from the movies just to watch the consipiracy theorists make prats of themselves again?
-
(http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/a51.jpg)
at the very least I would have coppied and pasted in some of the surounding desert so it wasn't so fucking obvius
I mean that like screams "HEY LOOK THERE IS A HIDDEN SECRET BASE HERE THAT YOU ARN"T SUPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT!!!"
-
That is sooooo funny!
I can't breath
-
I found this a little above the white area :D
(http://img120.exs.cx/img120/715/Area51.jpg)
Before you say anything, I know what these really are. So shut up, ****** :p
-
Drum roll, please. :D
-
Graineries? :nervous:
Errr... I know that they are everywhere over there, though
-
what, everyone knows what those are... right?:wtf:
there basicly desert farms if you didn't
-
I did...
I just made a joke in my first post :)
-
this is a wonderful piece of software.
It's also about 12 years too late for it to be useful to me.
I found my field area from my masters, I would have killed ot have the topo/photo overlay this thing has 12 years ago.
Great stuff.
-
Switch to USGS-Topo when viewing that white space - it's apparently Nellis Air Force Range. :D

Sky Net will 0wnz j00 w1t d3h p0w&h!
-
there is aparently a plugin that lets you use an alternate server someone set up.
-
Cool. This'll take me a couple of days to download, but why not. Got some spare bandwidth since I'm not downloading Halo 2 videos. :p
-
I found the solution!
Look in the forumsHERE (http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/worldwind/forums/index.php?showtopic=514)
:D
-
Kewl - it works.... I think. :nervous:
-
I'm still having a hard time grasping the concept that computers can be used for learning......
-
Just thaught i'd bump this saying landsat servers are UP now
-
alright! look what I found now!
