Title: Doing Nebula Backgrounds
Post by: IceFire on March 07, 2001, 09:01:00 pm
Hey everyone!

This seems to be a laregly art dedicated forum so I'm going to post this here (perhaps we should just have an art forum?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)).

What's everyones techniques on making background nebula.  Its something I've been pondering for a while and I have made some progress but so far I've just been using a spray brust from PSP6 and playing around.

Whats your techniques?

The mod nebulas (it spelled in another way I can't remember) I've made that you can use with FreeSpace 2 are really easy to do. There's a filter called "Cloud" In Photoshop witch can make nice looking nebulas.

As for nebulas in rendered pics it's just a function in 3DS Max called RGB Tint. Using the spray brush and a little blur works equally as good and you have more control over what your doing if you compare with my method.

Go to Flaming Pear ("http://www.flamingpear.com") and pick up the Glitterato and LunarCell plug-ins. Prepare to be amazed.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I figure this'll fit better in here.

And those flaming pear plugins are sweet.  Very well done little programs.

I use a highly advanced technique that consists of selecting a few colors typing a whole lot of digits through the 3D Studio MAX interface.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Actually, it's that, but combined with a multi-layered composite material normally involving four to six layers  of the RGB Tint, Noise, Cellular, Perlin Marble and other procedural materials to achieve a nebula-like animatable fully environmental background effet.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm starting to develop a new technique for scenes ambiented inside the nebula, this one involving a high number of atmospheric gizmos and low-density combustion effects. It's also fully animatable.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I used to do my own using the Photoshop clouds method, but they were hard to get just right. You can see the results in my section of the FS art thing (the top few mainly).

Glittero and Lunarcell are kickass little plug ins for PS  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I think I spent about 5 hours playing with them once I first got them loaded up  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But Ice ,Gllittero is a great and easy way to create your own Nebulas.

Yep - I use them now of course, their definitely the most easy to use, fast and effective tools out there if you want to make great nebulas (and as you can see from Setekhs and my own work, they look great).

Yes, Glitterato is incredible. I just realised I could use it in PSP6 as well, dloaded it and made a few neat nebulas. It just takes pretty long when making bigger ones  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I used to make my own ones, you can still see them in the older few FS Story pics. Here are some of the ones I did pretty much by hand - they didn't turn out to badly, methinks.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I can still do them, they just take more time.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
